Abstract:
Childhood mental health problems are common (8-18% of the school age population), persistent, seemingly increasing, and can lead to a range of negative outcomes including adult mental illness, risk-taking behaviour, educational failure, and criminality (Costello, Egger & Angold, 2005). The effectiveness of child mental health care is therefore of great importance. This study examined the effectiveness of child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). This study explored the relationship of clinical outcome as reported by different informants and parental experience of the service and sat

Abstract:
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are provided according to a four tiered model (Health Advisory Service, 1995), based on the assumption that increasing levels of problem severity, complexity and persistence should be managed across the tiers. There is little research to underpin these assumptions and while some studies have indicated factors associated with CAMHS access and usage, there is a paucity of evidence to suggest which children can be managed at each tier of service. If severity, complexity and persistence do differ across the tiers, measures could be used at assess

Abstract:
Transitional care is an important process for professionals to consider, particularly as recent studies have shown how a mental health difficulty in adolescence will persist into adulthood. This indicates that a number of those seen in Child and Adolescent mental health services are likely to make the transition into Adult services. For professionals from both services, barriers can arise when supporting young people across service boundaries and recent studies have stated that the current practice of transitional care in mental health is deemed to be problematic. Section A provides a critical review of the literature pertinent to children’s imaginary companions, including definitional issues, historical background, and prevalence. Empirical research concerning the characteristics of children who create imaginary companions is presented, followed by an overview of theories attempting to explain the development and functions of imaginary companions. Empirical research investigating the functions of imaginary companions in normative populations is then reviewed, followed by research into the imaginary companions of children from clinical populations. Literature Review: Transitions between CAMHS and AMHS services have been identified as problematic and in need of improvement, due in part to the different philosophical underpinnings of CAMHS and AMHS services. The review section of this thesis synthesises evidence of the lived experience of adolescent service users’, parents’ and clinicians’ of the CAMHS to AMHS transition. The review reveals that individuals experience a sense of abandonment at this point in the care journey, expressing feelings of insecurity, anxiety and a belief that they are unable to affect change. It highlights the nee

Abstract:
The literature review aimed to systematically review social cognitive abilities in young people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features. Three electronic databases were searched and ten met the inclusion criteria. Through the quality appraisal, the studies were found to be weak overall. Across the studies, social cognition was assessed using various measures. The participants included both nonclinical and clinical populations. All studies rated BPD features through standardised, reliable measures. Findings were mixed. Studies demonstrated that individuals with BPD features had cert

Abstract:
This dissertation provides an interpretation of the accounts of six mothers who have a diagnosis of mental illness and also have children who are being treated for emotional or behavioural difficulties. The participants took part in an interview where questions were asked about their experiences of being a mother, having a child with difficulties and the impact of their children's difficulties on them. The data produced were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Attention was given to the role of the researcher as a clinician who works closely with this client group an

Aims: Research examining the process of clinical psychology training has essentially focused on the outsider perspective and given little consideration of the trainee’s lived experience. Using qualitative methodology this project aims to listen and privilege personal narratives of individuals who occupy the role of trainee clinical psychologist and parent simultaneously during CAMHS training (i.e. placement and associated teaching) in order to increase awareness of the challenges and existing resources of this population. Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide the field of child and adolescent mental health with an understanding, from young people’s perspectives, of being assessed and having decisions made about their interventions by clinicians within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). In order to obtain this understanding it is important to explore how young people experience both the CAMHS assessment process and being recommended interventions. Therefore, paper one consists of a literature review in which nine studies regarding young people’s experiences of being assessed in a mental healt

Abstract:
This study explores family therapists’ experiences of using systemic art and music techniques in a CAMHS setting and charts how these techniques were developed through an action research process. As a music therapist and family and systemic psychotherapist, I have used techniques in my practice that combine ideas from the Arts therapies with systemic therapy. This study was born from my curiosity to explore if these ideas and techniques could be expanded into the field of family therapy as a useful adjunct to our work with words. The study involved recruiting participants from three NHS family
