Abstract:
Over 50% of the world’s population lives in cities, many of which are hot, polluted, and expanding. The design of cities impacts local meteorology and climate, which affect building energy use and the comfort and health of urban residents. Numerical models that incorporate the relevant urban elements and physical processes can predict these effects and guide management strategies. Addition of vegetation is a key design strategy for moderation of local urban climate, and many cities already boast extensive vegetation. Relative to shorter vegetation, urban trees have unique effects on local clim

Abstract:
abstract: Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the most rapidly urbanizing areas in the U.S., which has resulted in an urban heat island (UHI) of substantial size and intensity. Several detrimental biophysical and social impacts arising from the large UHI has posed, and continues to pose, a challenge to stakeholders actively engaging in discussion and policy formulation for a sustainable desert city. There is a need to mitigate some of its detrimental effects through sustainable methods, such as through the application of low-water, desert-adapted low-water use trees within residential yar

Abstract:
Crop improvement is necessary for food security as the global population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050. Limitations in water resources and more frequent droughts and floods will make it increasingly difficult to manage agricultural resources and increase yields. Therefore, we must improve our ability to monitor agronomic research plots and use the information they provide to predict impacts of moisture stress on crop growth and yield. Towards this end, agronomists have used reductions in leaf expansion rates as a visible ‘plant-based’ indicator of moisture stress. Also, modeling rese

In the first chapter, we present the motivation of this work as well as a background review of large-scale coherent structures in land-atmosphere interaction. In the second chapter, the methodology of large-eddy simulation (LES) and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is introduced. LES was used to serve as

Enhanced understanding of forest stocks and dynamics can be gained through improved forest measurement, which is required to assist with sustainable forest management decisions, meet Australian and international reporting needs, and improve research efforts to better respond to a changing climate. Integrated sampling schemes that utilise a multi-scale approach, with a range of data sourced from both field and remote sensing, have been identified as a way to generate the required forest information. Given the multi-scale approach proposed by these schemes, it is important to understand how scal

Abstract:
Thin-layer rewetting tests were conducted for seeds of canola (Brassica campestris L.) in the temperature range of 7.5*C to 30.0*C at two relative humidities (80 and 90%) using a thin-layer wetting unit. Separate tests were done at 5.0, 7.0 and 10.0% initial moisture contents of seeds and 0.10, 0.25, and 0.43 m/s air velocities while the air was maintained at 30*C and 90% relative humidity. In the tests, a thin-layer (one to two kernels thick) of canola was held in the vertical plane and the conditioned air was passed through the layer, thus fully exposing the thin-layer of canola to the air.

Abstract:
The city of Melbourne in southeast Australia experiences an Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which is exacerbated during heatwaves, and the latter are becoming more frequent, intense and longer in southeast Australia. In addition, Melbourne is the fastest growing city in Australia. Therefore, it is urgent to understand the dynamics of UHI and impacts of future urban expansion on the UHI during heatwaves. Based on these issues, there is a crucial need to investigate the effectiveness of potential mitigation strategies to minimize UHI effects during heatwaves. The overarching aim of the thesis is
