Abstract:
Portland cement concrete (PCC) structures deteriorate with age and need to be maintained or replaced. Early detection of deterioration in PCC (e.g., alkali-silica reaction, freeze/thaw damage or chloride presence) can lead to significant reductions in maintenance costs. Portland cement concrete can be nondestructively evaluated by electrically characterizing its complex dielectric constant in a laboratory setting. A parallel-plate capacitor operating in the frequency range of 0.1 to 40.1 MHz was developed at Virginia Tech for this purpose. While useful in research, this approach is not practical for field implementation. In this study, a capacitor probe was designed and fabricated to determine the in-situ dielectric properties of PCC over a frequency range of 2.0 to 20.0 MHz. It is modeled after the parallel-plate capacitor in that it consists of two conducting plates with a known separation. The conducting plates are flexible, which allows them to conform to different geometric shapes. Prior to PCC testing, measurements were conducted to determine the validity of such a system by testing specimens possessing known dielectric properties (Teflon). Portland cement concrete specimens were cast (of sufficient size to prevent edge diffraction of the electromagnetic waves) having two different air contents, two void thicknesses, and two void depths (from the specimen's surface). Two specimens were cast for each parameter and their results were averaged. The dielectric properties over curing time were measured for all specimens, using the capacitor probe and the parallel-plate capacitor. The capacitor probe showed a decrease in dielectric constant with increasing curing time and/or air content. In addition to measuring dielectric properties accurately and monitoring the curing process, the capacitor probe was also found to detect the presence and relative depth of air voids, however, determining air void thickness was difficult.

Abstract:
Tantalum capacitors are electronic components that are widely used in many types of devices. They are particularly valued for their exceptionally high capacitance and volumetric efficiency. One of the most vital performance parameters for this type of capacitor is the ability to handle unwanted AC ripple, since high levels of ripple can lead to overheating and capacitor failure. Yet the actual ripple limit for a capacitor has been historically difficult to quantify, and has been previously provided to customers only in the form of heavily padded estimates. Throughout the capacitor industry there has been significant demand for more realistic ripple ratings. The discussion here describes a new test system that has been designed to meet this demand for ripple characterization of wet tantalum capacitors.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this research project was to explain how Korean immigrants develop acculturation attitudes toward Korean and American culture and how these attitudes are related to their experiences within their community in America. In order to achieve this goal, this project consisted of two empirical studies. In Study 1, the model of community capacity and acculturation was tested using structural equation modeling and the model fit the data very well. The results of the hypotheses tests in Study 1 were as follows: Sense of Community, Community Provisions, and Community Engagement were positively correlated with each other. Sense of Community and Community Provisions directly influenced acculturation attitudes toward American culture. Community Capacity directly influenced acculturation attitudes toward Korean culture. Sense of community and Community Provisions had significant indirect effects on acculturation attitudes toward Korean culture. In Study 2, using structural equation modeling, the model of community adjustment was tested across three groups (INTEGRATION, ASSIMILATION, and SEPARATION) who had developed different acculturation attitudes and the model fit the data well except for ASSIMILATION. The results of the tests of the hypotheses in Study 2 were as follows: Sense of Community and Community Capacity were positively correlated with each other in all groups. Only INTEGRATION did Sense of Community directly influence Community Provisions. However, Community Capacity directly influenced community provisions in all three groups. In INTEGRATION and SEPARATION, Community Engagement directly influenced Community Provisions. Community Capacity indirectly influenced Community Provisions in both INTEGRATION and SEPARATION. Finally, I concluded that Korean immigrants experienced the process of community adjustment differently regarding acculturation attitudes. Results from these investigations explicitly reveal that the application of community capacity in research on acculturation was valuable for explaining some individual and contextual variations in acculturation. Acculturation was a complex, multi-dimensional process. Korean immigrants developed different attitudes and their attitudes impacted differently on their lives within their larger community. The theoretical concept of community capacity has much promise as a guide for future theory and research on acculturation.

Abstract:
A study was conducted into the intrinsic degradation behavior of X7R and Z5U capacitors. The major goals of this research were: 1) to determine current-voltage, activation energy and leakage current characteristics for such capacitors. 2) to investigate how these characteristics change with degradation; 3) to investigate possible correlations between observed behavior and capacitor microstructure or composition. Examination of capacitor microstructures revealed large differences in grain morphology and electrode spacings. The development of a color gradient between positive and negative electrodes with. degradation was observed in one type of capacitor. Compositional studies using EDAX, AUGER, and microprobe analyses failed to detect gradients in dielectric composition in degraded capacitors indicating that gradients are less than 0.1 atomic percent. Current-voltage studies showed a 3/2 power dependance, at voltages above one volt for X7R capacitors indicating space charge limited current. This dependance was attributed to point emission from electrode protuberances. The 3/2 dependance was observed to shift to a square law behavior with degradation. This change was attributed to a increase in conductivity of the dielectric near the cathode, blunting the effect of electrode protuberances. Z5U capacitors were found to have ohmic behavior. No Schottky or Poole Frenkel currents were observed. Degradation studies were carried out on capacitors at 2 to 8 times the rated voltage, and at temperatures from 100 to 1500℃. Leakage currents in actively degrading capacitors were observed to rise exponentially with time. This rise was accompanied by a gradual decrease in activation energy. A model is proposed to explain the observed current vs degradation behavior.

Abstract:
Supercapacitors have attracted great attention because of their high power density, long life cycle and high efficiency. They can be generally classified into two types: electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors. Compared with pseudocapacitors, EDLCs have a very fast charge/discharge rate, higher power density, higher coulombic efficiency and longer cycle life. Recently, in order to meet the requirements of portable and wearable electronics, supercapacitor development is moving towards flexible and stretchable solutions. This thesis presents the design, fabrication, performance testing and optimisation of flexible strip and fibre EDLCs. In this research, a sandwich structured strip EDLC was designed and manufactured. Experimental design was utilised to optimise the operation parameters of the EDLC in order to improve its capacity for energy storage. The flexibility of the strip EDLCs was studied extensively by mechanical tests under static and dynamic loading conditions, and the correlation between the electrochemical performance of the EDLCs and the mechanical testing process was investigated. Novel coaxial fibre EDLCs have also been studied and developed in this study. Fibre supercapacitors showed a good flexibility and weavability. The activated carbon produced by ball-milling method with optimum specific capacitance was mixed with commercial ink to produce active material to optimise the electrochemical performance of fibre EDLCs. The flexible EDLCs were applied into different appliances to demonstrate the stability of performance and the usability of EDLCs developed in this study. The electrical current and potential range can be altered by connecting multiple strip or fibre EDLCs in parallel or in series to meet the power and energy requirements. It has been proved that the flexible EDLCs developed have a great potential to be used as energy storage devices for smart electronics. This thesis makes original contributions to knowledge, including using an advanced test method to study the electrochemical performance of flexible supercapacitors under static and dynamic mechanical testing, investigation of the effect of key parameters in the manufacturing process on the performance of strip supercapacitors using experimental design method to optimise the supercapacitors’ performance, and optimisation of the performance of fibre supercapacitors by improving the structure and using a new active material with higher specific capacitance.

Abstract:
A series of full-scale steel fibre reinforced I-beams with varying web width has been tested in shear failure. A rectangular steel fibre reinforced beam and a conventionally reinforced I-beam have also been tested for comparison. The concrete used is a self-compacting concrete with a B45 classification. The concrete contains 1%vol (78,5kg/m3) steel fibres with end-hooks of type Dramix 3D 65/60.The load-deflection and load-shear crack opening response has been analysed for all beams and been compared with each other. A fibre count has also been conducted to investigate the influence the element size has on the fibre orientation. The results have been compared with guidelines from COIN and Model Code based on residual flexural tensile strengths from small beam tests according to NS-EN 14651. The report also gives an introduction of steel fibre reinforced concrete and design guidelines used to estimate the shear capacity.The results show that steel fibres have a significant effect on the shear capacity. All beams had more capacity than expected based on calculations made prior to testing. The ultimate shear capacity seems to be higher for I-beams than rectangular beams. A high fibre orientation factor in the longitudinal direction is found in the web in all beams, though a low representation of fibres around the tensile reinforcement. The orientation factor seems to increase with more slender elements. A good correlation between ultimate shear capacity and fibre orientation factor is not found within the range studied. However, the load at first crack seems to increase with higher longitudinal fibre orientation factor. An increase in the first crack load is also found for the SFRC beam compared to the beam with stirrups.

Abstract:
This study addresses the issue of adjusting the proportion of load transmitted by each hole in a multiplehole joint so that the joint capacity is a maximum. Specifically two-hole-in-series joints are examined. The results indicate that when each hole reacts 50% of the total load, the joint capacity is not a maximum. One hole generally is understressed at joint failure. The algorithm developed to determine the load proportion at each hole which results in maximum capacity is discussed. The algorithm includes two-dimensional finite-element stress analysis and a failure criteria. The algorithm is used to study the effects of joint width, hole spacing, and hole to joint-end distance on load proportioning and capacity. To study hole size effects, two hole diameters are considered. Three laminates are considered: a quasi-isotropic laminate; a cross-ply laminate; and a 45 degree angle-ply laminate. By proportioning the load, capacity can be increased generally from 5 to 10%. In some cases a greater increase is possible.

Abstract:
The incremental structural analysis program NISA83 was used to investigate various parameters affecting the ultimate capacity of square plates with circular perforations subjected to uniform shear stress. Both nonlinear material properties and nonlinear geometry were taken into account in determining the ultimate in-plane capacities and buckling capacities of perforated shear plates. The parameters investigated during this study were the hole size for a concentric location, and the hole location for a constant ratio of hole diameter to plate width of 0.2. In addition various doubler plates were studied to determine the most effective shape to restore a shear plate to its original ultimate in-plane capacity. For the first two parameters, the analysis was separated into three parts. The ultimate in-plane capacity, elastic buckling capacity and the ultimate elastic-plastic buckling capacity was determined for each combination of the two parameters. These were used to identify the importance of both elastic buckling and nonlinear material contribute to the reduced ultimate plate capacities. The results from plates with a concentrically located hole of varying size showed excellent correlation with other published experimental and analytical results for both the in-plane capacity and the 3-dimensional buckling capacities. Variation of the center location of a hole of a standard size provided some significant results. Little change was found in the ultimate in-plane capacity for all hole locations. On the other hand, the elastic buckling capacity was raised by 50% after moving the hole from the plate tension diagonal to the compression diagonal. Finally, from the ultimate elastic-plastic' buckling capacity results it was concluded that the concentric provides lower bound capacity for all other hole locations. The in-plane analysis of the optimum doubler plate size showed wide and thin plates to be more effective than narrow and thick plates. A doubler plate with the same thickness as the plate and twice the diameter of the hole is recommended to restore the perforated plate to its original in-plane capacity. In order to aid in the tedious task of checking the input data and to provide a convenient way of displaying the result, a full graphic post-processor was developed as part of this thesis. The program NISPLOT used color graphics available at the UBC Civil Engineering lab to process the output from NISA83. It was written in FORTRAN 77, utilizing subroutines from a commercial graphics package, DI3000, to obtain device independent graphics. NISPLOT generated plots of the nodes and element mesh for each data check. When a complete analysis was carried out by NISA83, nodes, element mesh, deflected shape, and color stress fill plots were generated.

Abstract:
The thesis examines the use of fibre reinforced concrete in carrying structures. The basis of the project is shear capacity of beams with openings which is a very common structural element. It has been carried out full-scale tests of one reference beam and three beams with openings reinforced with different reinforcement combinations.The first part of the report consists of a literature study based on earlier research and published material on fibre reinforced concrete and its use in carrying structures. Different fibres and their properties are described as well as the components in concrete and their effect. As of today there are no official set of rules for designing fibre reinforced structures, but there are several suggestions for rules which are described in the report. The most important set of rules for this project is made by COIN (Concrete Innovation Centre). The calculations done in the project are based on the COIN-report.The concrete used in the tests were delivered by Unicon and the castings were done in two days, one casting with plain concrete (reference beam and one beam with openings with traditional shear reinforcement) and one casting with fibre reinforcement (Dramix 80/60). The fibre reinforced beams with openings consisted of one beam with a combination of fibre and traditional shear reinforcement and one with only fibres as shear reinforcement. The casting of the fibre reinforced concrete proved difficult as the fibres were lumping together and deteriorated the flowability. Therefore the FRC required a lot of work while being cast.In addition to the full-scale beams standard beams and testing cubes were cast. These were later tested to establish the strength properties of the concrete. The tests showed that both the compressive strength and the residual tensile strength were higher than the theoretical values used in the pre-testing calculations, so post-testing calculations were carried out as well.The full-scale beams were tested at the structural laboratory at NTNU. The testing was done in a rig with a four point testing set-up with two symmetrical loads. The beams were instrumented to measure the midspan vertical displacement as well as the crack openings beneath the openings and a computer registered the measured values. Both the fibre reinforced beams proved to have better capacity and ductility than the plain concrete beams. This indicates that steel fibre reinforcement is a good solution for shear reinforcement for beams with openings.Most of the calculations done were in good accordance with the test results although they were a bit on the conservative side. The calculations for the beam with only fibre reinforcement were not very good, and post-testing calculations were done to find the width of a theoretical tensile trajectory based on the real capacity. All in all the tests showed that the use of FRC in beams with openings might be a good solution in the future. More research should be done on this subject to develop design rules for FRC beams with openings.

Mobile phones can be used to assess patients health by collecting valuable informationthrough the sensors, GPS and accelerometers and then uploading them to a centraldatabase to allow for clinicians to remotely monitor the decline, improvement or over-all health status of a patient [1] [2].Many mHealth applications use mobile phones built-in GPS, accelerometer and othersensors which allows for a large selection of work to compare the implemented exercisecapacity test to [1].The exercise capacity tests developed for this thesis is to be used in Mobistudy. Mobis-tudy is an open mobile-health platform for clinical research. The platform has an emphasison regulatory compliance, patient consent and transparency [3].The thesis resulted in the creation of two artifacts which were able to successfullycollect data from the user to transfer to the clinicians using the application. During theanalysis it was found that the SMWT algorithm developed by Salvi et al [4] worked wellunder non optimal conditions. The Queens College Step Tests result were in general poor,however more testing with more different phones is required to provide a clear answer.

Informed consent for pharmacogenomic testing in people with a learning disability Background Advances in genomic healthcare will enable medication to be tailored to each individual’s needs, based on subtle genetic variations. This will result in individuals being asked to consent to genetic testing for this purpose. The recent political agenda for social change has emphasised the right of people with learning disabilities to have more autonomy and make their own decisions. There have also been significant changes in the way healthcare practitioners relate to their patients, with a shift away from paternalism towards shared decision-making. Research Aim The aims of the study were (1) to explore the information needs of people with mild to moderate learning disabilities with respect to pharmacogenomic tests and (2) to identify ways of facilitating informed consent. Methods An integrative literature review was conducted to identify research on informed consent to healthcare interventions in people with learning disabilities (Phase 1). Subsequent phases (Phases 2-4) of the study were conducted using an ethnographic approach. Phase 2 involved observation of six participants with learning disabilities undergoing a routine blood test consultation in general practice. This was followed by Phase 3, in which semi-structured interviews with 14 participants with learning disabilities were conducted. In Phase 4, three different methods were used: focus groups with carers (four paid carers, five family carers), an on-line bulletin board for healthcare professionals (five participants) and interviews with six key informants from the field of learning disability. Findings The data showed consent procedures were often inadequate and there was inconsistent knowledge of mental capacity law amongst health professionals. Provision of information to patients prior to a blood test was variable, but interviews with people with learning disabilities revealed the fact that this information may not be wanted by them. People with learning disabilities viewed pharmacogenomic tests as similar to other blood tests and would want access to them. The attitudes of paid carers and family carers differed in terms of decision-making opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Conclusions Healthcare practitioners, carers and people with learning disability need to be familiar with the principles of the Mental Capacity Act to facilitate valid consent in the healthcare context. Healthcare practitioners also need to be made aware of developments in pharmacogenomics if it is to become part of routine health care. Finally, this study demonstrated the value of qualitative research in exploring the knowledge and attitudes of people with learning disability.

Abstract:
The development of energy storage devices has represented a significant technological challenge for the past few years. Electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), also named as supercapacitors, are a likely competitor for alternative energy storage because of their low-cost, high power density, and high fast charge/discharge rate. The recent development of EDLCs requires them to be lightweight and flexible. There are many fabrication techniques used to manufacture flexible EDLCs, and these methods can include pre-treatment to ensure more efficient penetration of activated carbon (AC) patterns onto the substrate, or those that utilise masks for the definitions of patterns on substrates. However, these methods are inconvenient for building cost-effective devices. Therefore, it was necessary to find a suitable process to reduce the steps of manufacture and to be able to print multiple materials uniformly. This research work describes the first use of a 3D printing technology to produce flexible EDLCs for energy storage. In this research work, the four essential elements for the EDLCs substrate, current collector, activated electrode, and gel electrolyte were investigated. The AC powder was milled by ball milling to optimise the paste deposition and the electrochemical performance. A flexible composite EDLC was designed and manufactured by 3D printing. The electrochemical performance of the flexible composite EDLCs was then examined. Being highly flexible is one of the critical demands for the recent development of EDLCs. Therefore, highly flexible EDLCs were designed and manufactured by only one single extrusion process. The 3D highly flexible EDLC maintains significant electrochemical performance under a mechanical bending test. To meet the power and energy requirements, the EDLCs were connected and tested in series and parallel circuits. A supercapacitor based on printed AC material displays an area specific capacitance of 1.48 F/cm2 at the scan rate of 20 mV/s. The coulombic efficiency for the flexible EDLC was found to be 59.91%, and the cycling stability was achieved to be 56% after 500 cycles. These findings indicate that 3D printing technology may be increasingly used to develop more sophisticated flexible wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:
Fibre reinforcement as a substitute for conventional bar reinforcement provides for a more efficient construction and building industry, and is therefore of high interest. Today, several countries are developing rules and regulations for the use of fibre reinforced concrete in load carrying structures.The aim of this thesis was to consider the use of fibre reinforcement in load carrying concrete structures, and the main focus was on shear capacity of corbel-end beams. The thesis was divided into two parts: A theoretical part and an experimental part. A full-scale laboratory testing was performed on ten corbel-ends, and on one reference beam without corbel-ends. Different fibre types, material properties, mechanical behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete and test methods were emphasized, in addition to relevant formulas and mechanical relations. Throughout laboratory testing of full-scale beams, different reinforcement layouts were compared with traditional layout. The capacity, ductility, cracking load and crack pattern were investigated. Furthermore, evaluation of the results against current design methods, guidelines and previous results concerning shear problems in corbel-ends were done.Test results proved that the calculated fibre effect was too high. The contribution of vertical stirrups could be directly related to the calculated capacity of the vertical stirrups. The capacity of the fiber reinforced beams was lower than the traditionally reinforced beam, but they had higher ductility and obtained higher load-carrying capacity at large strains. One beam was cast with an optimized casting procedure, and the results indicated that a favourable fibre orientation and distribution was obtained in this beam. All design guidelines gave generally conservative capacities based on the theoretical residual tensile strength, but too high capacities based on the measured residual flexural tensile strength.The overall conclusion of this thesis is that fibre reinforcement may be used as a fully or partly substitute for traditional shear reinforcement in load carrying corbel-end beams. More research on the field is still needed to validate the design guidelines.

Abstract:
Counters provide information about the functionality of the base station. That information is highly valuable for mobile operators, who re-configure their networks partly based on that information. Mobile operators also monitor counters to see, what base station is capable of. Each base station has hundreds of different counters, measuring numerous different things continuously. Counter information is provided by the base station software, which takes care of keeping all the counters up-to-date. Nowadays base stations are very efficient, and they are capable to handle thousands of different requests in the blink of the eye. Increasing complexity of the product poses an enormous challenge for counters, since calculating the values for each counter gets more complex. This research was conducted in Finnish large-scale telecommunications company. Although counters are extremely important for customers, they are not verified effectively in case company’s LTE PDCP/RLC/MAC layer’s capacity tests. The goal of this research is to create a mechanism, which makes it possible to easily enable automatic counter verification in any automated capacity test case. Design science research was applied to achieve this goal. In this research, literature review is conducted to gain understanding for LTE, 3GPP throughput counters, and about the capacity testing environment of the case company. Then a new counter verification system for LTE PDCP/RLC/MAC layer’s capacity tests is designed and implemented. After the system is implemented, expected counter values need to be calculated for each test case and counter, which are part of this research. Evaluation of the system is made against the system requirements and to accuracy of limit value calculations. As a conclusion, it can be said that the implementation of the system was a success, but in some of the test cases, counters provided unexpected results. The implemented system was able to catch the faults, but the root causes for problems are not clear. In total, 185 test case – counter combinations were verified, and in almost 13 % of them counter verification failed the test case, because counter provided unexpected value. In future, it would be beneficial to make a root cause analysis for the issues this research pointed out.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis was to identify valid, simple, and inexpensive physical tests that can be used for evaluation of firefighters’ physical work capacity. Paper I included fulltime- and part-time firefighters (n = 193), aged 20-60 years. Perceived physical demands of firefighting work tasks were ranked, and comparisons between subject groups rating were done with the Mann Whitney U-test and Binominal test. Papers II and III included male firefighters and civilian men and women (n = 38), aged 24-57 years. Laboratory and field tests of aerobic fitness, muscle strength and endurance, balance, and simulated firefighting work tasks were performed. Physical capacity comparisons between subject groups were done and bivariate correlations between physical tests and work capacity in the simulated firefighting work tasks analyzed. Paper IV included the same subjects as in Paper II-III (training-set), and additional 90 subjects (prediction-set), aged 20-50 years. Laboratory and field tests of aerobic fitness, muscle strength and endurance and balance, and simulated firefighting work tasks were included. Data from the training-set was used to build models for prediction of firefighters’ physical work capacity, using multivariate statistic. The prediction-set was used to externally validate the selected models. Several work tasks were rated as physically demanding and significant differences (p < 0.05) in ratings were found between full-time and part-time firefighters (Paper I). Significant differences were found between subject groups in physical capacity, and work capacity (p < 0.01) (Paper II-IV). Both laboratory and field tests were significantly (p < 0.01) correlated with work capacity time (Paper II-III). The prediction (R2) and predictive power (Q2) of firefighters’ work capacity (Carrying hose baskets upstairs, Hose pulling, Demolition at or after a fire, Victim rescue, and Carrying hose baskets over terrain) was R2 = 0.74 to 0.91, and Q2 = 0.65 to 0.85, and the external validation ranged between R2: 0.38 to 0.80 (Paper IV). In conclusion, rowing 500 m (s), maximal handgrip strength (kg), endurance bench press (n), running 3000 m (s and s scaled to body weight) upright barbell row (n) and standing broad jump (m) together provides valid information about firefighters’ physical work capacity.

The purpose of this study was to compare the concentration of and the time to peak blood lactate following three 90-s cycle ergometer tests--intermittent all-out (Int-A), continuous all-out (Cont-A), and continuous constant (Cont-C), and to compare group peak lactate to blood lactate at individual peak time. Eight fingertip blood samples were drawn between 1 and 12min post-exercise. Subjects were university hockey players (n = 19) and physical education students (n = 19). The two all-out tests had a higher peak concentration than the Cont-C test (P $<$ 0.05). The Int-A test had an earlier peak than the two continuous tests (P $<$ 0.05) but this difference vanished if peak time was measured from the onset of the tests. A number of sampling times had lactate concentrations similar to the individual peak concentration (P $<$ 0.05): (1) 1, 2, 3, and 4min for Int-A; (2) 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6min for Cont-A; (3) 2 and 4min for Cont-C.

Muscle activation capacity assessment could be affected by the mechanical behaviour of the muscle, but this aspect has received little attention. Understanding the effect the muscle's mechanical behaviour has on muscle activation capacity assessment can be paramount in achieving a better understanding of muscle function. The aim of the present Thesis was to examine the methodological implications of the mechanical behaviour of the muscle during muscle activation capacity assessment. Four studies were designed to examine the effect of the muscle-tendon unit on a) muscle activation capacity calculation methods and number of stimuli used, by manipulating quadriceps muscle length and consequently stiffness, b) stimulation intensity required and associated discomfort, by examining whether a lower than supramaximal stimulation intensity threshold, sufficient to stretch the muscle-tendon, exists, and c) the interplay between muscle mechanics and activation, by manipulating the testing position on the dynamometer, stabilisation and concurrent activation of remote muscles. Isometric knee extensions were used for all studies, and electrical stimuli was delivered to the muscle to quantify muscle activation capacity or induce muscular contractions by circumventing the voluntary neural drive. The results showed that a) altered muscle stiffness affects muscle activation values depending on the calculation method and number of stimuli used, suggesting caution to testing where muscle stiffness is likely to change, b) a lower stimulation intensity exists that can reduce subject discomfort while obtaining valid activation capacity results, widening the application of electrical muscle stimulation, and c) muscle activation must be considered in musculoskeletal models for more accurate predictions but the level of activation will ultimately depend on how stabilised the muscle is. Collectively, these results demonstrate the considerable effect muscle mechanics have on muscle activation capacity and that muscle strength assessment must take into account this aspect for more accurate inferences on muscle function.

Bridges form a vital link in the physical infrastructure and must be maintained in a "safe working order" at all times. It is estimated that there are currently 20,000 timber road bridges in service throughout Australia. Increasing demands on these bridges due to heavier and faster moving loads, together with deterioration are placing these aging structures at a higher risk of collapse. Unfortunately, many local governments and government departments have neglected the benefits of preventative maintenance and have opted for "just in time" repairs. This is especially true for timber bridges. This past neglect has placed bridge stock in a poor state that is only now being recognised as a significant problem. A key component of this research is to develop improvements to this current situation. This research thesis generates detailed knowledge on the load carrying capacities of timber bridges and new non destructive testing techniques that can be substituted for conventional testing procedures. For the first time guidelines have been developed for undertaking capacity assessment on timber bridges by specifying intervention levels for notched timber and limiting maximum allowable strains in timber members. This newly acquired knowledge will enable Asset Managers to more accurately determine the capacity of sniped timber bridge girders to enable appropriate retrofitting and maintenance while also allowing the safe movement of heavy vehicles. The knowledge generated through destructive testing of timber girders and the analysis of the vast amount of experimental data has enabled the first instance of developing specifications for replacement girders. These specifications detail both functional and performance related targets for three different types of replacement girders. Testing of these replacement girders also demonstrates that through some minor modifications that the specification targets can be met. The outcomes of this thesis provide an innovative approach to accessing the condition and capacity of timber girders and to increasing the safety and life of timber bridges in Queensland. By using new techniques such as Non-destructive testing, species identification and limiting maximum allowable strains, as described in this thesis, the road transport network can be safety used by heavy and permit vehicles. It is only through the effective management of timber bridge maintenance and rehabilitation that Australia can have an efficiently running road transportation network.

Abstract:
Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) will increasingly be used for tasks such as retrieving injured soldiers from a battlefield, transporting supplies, and towing other small vehicles and payloads. To date, the unmanned test community has not standardized on an apparatus or test operating procedure (TOP) specifically for evaluating the towing capacity of small unmanned ground vehicles. Draw-bar testing has been adapted by several groups to quantify small unmanned ground vehicle (SUGV) tow capacity; however, these devices are inherently limited to measuring peak static towing force. This paper describes an alternative method using a variable-resistance tow sled for quantifying the dynamic towing capacity of SUGVs. The tow sled contains a frontal skid plate and a rear axle and wheel arrangement. A weighted carriage is transferred from the rear of the sled to the front of the sled by a cable geared to the rear axle. As the sled is pulled along the ground, towing resistance increases in a controlled linear fashion. An encoder on the rear axle and a load cell in the tow chain provide motion and force data. Testing of the tow sled has been conducted on a TALON SUGV at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Small Robot Test Facility and a MATILDA SUGV at the Joint Unmanned Systems Test, Experimentation, and Research (JOUSTER) site.

It describes the global galvanic method of partial discharge measurement, the principle of cascade voltage multiplier, its main components are high-voltage capacitor and diode, facilities quality measurement of capacitors for voltage multipliers, advantages and disadvantages and principles of HIPOTRONICS DDX-8003 with the pulse discrimination system. In the experimental part of the diploma thesis is familiar with the diagnostics of high – voltage capacitors by means of laboratory measurements on the electronic bridge and with the help of partial discharge measurement system. Design of suitable electrode arrangement is described which eliminates the influence of corona which makes it impossible to measure partial discharges and the dissipation factor (tg ). Analysis data from measurement and determination of quality level, eventual degradation of measured capacitors. The result of this project should be designed the methodology for finding of poor – quality capacitors in order to increase the reliability of the voltage multiplier.

The Table Mountain Group (TMG) Aquifer is a huge aquifer system which may provide large bulk water supplies for local municipalities and irrigation water for agriculture in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces in South Africa. In many locations, water pressure in an aquifer may force groundwater out of ground surface so that the borehole drilled into the aquifer would produce overflow without a pump. Appropriate testing and evaluation of such artesian aquifers is very critical for sound evaluation and sustainable utilization of groundwater resources in the TMG area. However, study on this aspect of hydrogeology in TMG is limited. Although the flow and storage of TMG aquifer was conceptualised in previous studies, no specific study on artesian aquifer in TMG was made available. There are dozens of flowing artesian boreholes in TMG in which the pressure heads in the boreholes are above ground surface locally. A common approach to estimate hydraulic properties of the aquifers underneath is to make use of free-flowing and recovery tests conducted on a flowing artesian borehole. However, such testing approach was seldom carried out in TMG due to lack of an appropriate device readily available for data collection. A special hydraulic test device was developed for data collection in this context. The test device was successfully tested at a flowing artesian borehole in TMG. The device can not only be used to measure simultaneous flow rate and pressure head at the test borehole, but also be portable and flexible for capturing the data during aquifer tests in similar conditions like artesian holes in Karoo, dolomite or other sites in which pressure head is above ground surface. The straight-line method proposed by Jacob-Lohman is often adopted for data interpretation. However, the approach may not be able to analyse the test data from flowing artesian holes in TMG. The reason is that the TMG aquifers are often bounded by impermeable faults or folds at local or intermediate scale, which implies that some assumptions of infinite aquifer required for the straight-line method cannot be fulfilled. Boundary conditions based on the Jacob-Lohman method need to be considered during the simulation. In addition, the diagnostic plot analysis method using reciprocal rate derivative is adapted to cross-check the results from the straight-line method. The approach could help identify the flow regimes and discern the boundary conditions, of which results further provide useful information to conceptualize the aquifer and facilitate an appropriate analytical method to evaluate the aquifer properties. Two case studies in TMG were selected to evaluate the hydraulic properties of artesian aquifers using the above methods. The transmissivities of the artesian aquifer in TMG range from 0.6 to 46.7 m2/d based on calculations with recovery test data. Storativities range from 10-4 to 10-3 derived from free-flowing test data analysis. For the aquifer at each specific site, the transmissivity value of the artesian aquifer in Rawsonville is estimated to be 7.5–23 m2/d, with storativity value ranging from 2.0×10-4 to 5.5×10-4. The transmissivity value of the artesian aquifer in Oudtshoorn is approximately 37 m2/d, with S value of 1.16×10-3. The simulation results by straight-line and diagnostic plot analysis methods, not only imply the existence of negative skin zone in the vicinity of the test boreholes, but also highlight the fact that the TMG aquifers are often bounded by impermeable faults or folds at local or intermediate scale. With the storativity values of artesian aquifers derived from data interpretation, total groundwater storage capacity of aquifers at two case studies was calculated. The figures will provide valuable information for decision-makers to plan and develop sustainable groundwater utilization of artesian aquifers in local or intermediate scales. With the hydraulic test device readily available for data collection, more aquifer tests can be carried out in other overflow artesian boreholes in TMG. It becomes feasible to determine the hydraulic properties of artesian aquifers for the entire TMG. Thereof quantification of groundwater resources of artesian aquifers in TMG at a mega-scale becomes achievable. This would also contribute towards global research initiative for quantification of groundwater resources at a mega-scale.

Abstract:
A good deal of resources has been invested in building and maintaining existing infrastructure.Many structures are now becoming old and do not meet the requirements of an increasingtraffic load, or are reaching the end of their lifecycle. It is not possible or sustainable to replaceall those structures that have been judged to be obsolete or nearly obsolete. However, in manycases, their specified load carrying capacities are understated, so there is an urgent need toobtain more robust knowledge of their true status. In the design of new structures, a numberof assumptions relating to loading and structural behaviour have to be made, a number that canbe reduced by finding out more about the actual behaviour of the structure. This licentiate thesis describes the structural behaviour of existing unballasted open steel trussrailway bridges in general and methods for assessment in particular, with the aim of keepingthese structures in service for longer. An extensive program, divided into three phases of experimental studies, was carried out toincrease the understanding of existing unballasted steel truss railway bridges. Phase I consisted of instrumentation and monitoring of a 60 year-old railway bridge (ÅbyBridge) while it was still in service. A description of the object and the monitoring in thisphase of measurements is presented in Chapter 3 with some results and analysis in Chapter 4.Some of the findings from Phase I are described in Paper A, from which it was concluded thatthe stringer beams were subjected to large stresses originating from torsion and out-of-planebending. These effects are not normally considered yet may have significant consequences inrelation to fatigue. In Phase II, the former bridge over the Åby River was replaced and put beside the railwaytracks, where the instrumentation from Phase I was extended. The bridge was statically testedin 18 pre-defined load series before reaching failure. Phase II is described in Chapter 3 andsummarized in Paper B. It was found that the bridge could withstand loading corresponding tofour times the highest permitted axle-loading, or twice the design load for new bridges, beforeexhibiting an obvious non-linear behaviour with regard to vertical displacement in the midspan.The peak load was achieved at loading approximately 50% higher than the initial nonlinearbehaviour, where lateral buckling of the top chord limited the structure from carryingmore load. The failure can be concluded as being redundant without brittle failure of any ofthe connections. In Phase III, a different bridge was fitted with instrumentation and monitored while subjectedto live loading: the bridge over the river Rautasjokk. The Rautasjokk Bridge was constructedfive years later than the Åby Bridge, using the same drawings thus making it theoreticallyidentical in terms of geometry and material. It is situated along the “Ore line”, meaning that itis subjected to higher loads compared to the Åby Bridge which was located along the “Mainline”. The program for measurements originated from a code-based assessment which ruled thebridge unsafe to use with regard to fatigue of the stringers due to the gusset plates welded tothe top flange of the stringers. Paper C describes the measurement of local fatigue strains (hotspot)and comparison with nominal strains. In that paper, it was concluded that the hot-spotapproach was only favourable for one out of three studied positions, with regard to fatiguelifespan. This thesis ends with conclusions and suggestions for further research.

This report investigates the down-aisle buckling load capacity of steel storage rack uprights. The effects of discrete torsional restraints provided by the frame bracing in the cross-aisle direction is considered in this report. Since current theoretical methods used to predict the buckling capacity of rack uprights appear to be over-conservative and complex, this research may provide engineers an alternative method of design using detailed finite element analysis. In this study, the results from experimental testing of upright frames with K-bracing are compared to finite element predictions of displacements and maximum axial loads. The finite element analysis is then used to determine the buckling loads on braced and un-braced uprights of various lengths. The upright capacities can then be compared with standard design methods which generally do not accurately take into account the torsional resistance that the cross-aisle frame bracing provides to the upright. The information contained in this report would be beneficial to engineers or manufacturers who are involved in the design of rack uprights or other discretely braced complex light gauge steel members subject to axial loads.

Abstract:
Heart disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States with coronary artery disease (CAD) representing more than half of all cardiovascular events. Stable patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of CAD are likely to undergo either an exercise ECG and/or imaging study as a first line diagnostic assessment. A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) is an ECG stress test plus ventilatory gas analysis. Recently CPX has been used to detect exercise-induced myocardial ischemia suggestive of underlying CAD. Currently there are a number of diagnostic tests available for the identification of CAD with the most widely used being exercise ECG, myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and cardiac catheterization. Exercise ECG, although inexpensive, has a number of well-recognized limitations, including low sensitivity resulting in false positive results. MPI and catheterization are more accurate but also more invasive and expensive. It appears that CPX may improve the diagnostic accuracy of exercise ECG in a cost effective manner.

Abstract:
Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is the internationally recognized measure of a person's cardiorespiratory fitness. Currently the most accurate way of assessing one's true VO2max involves the use of maximal exercise tests, which require the use of specialized equipment, and are time consuming and costly. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of the submaximal Siconolfi step test to estimate VO2max. A second purpose was to determine if body fat percentage improved the validity. Thirty-six individuals underwent a maximal treadmill test, in which VO2max was directly measured, and the step test. Results indicate that, although VO2max estimates generated by the Siconolfi step test are highly correlated to true VO2max (r =.887; p<.01), the values consistently underestimated a person's aerobic fitness. It was also determined that body fat percentage did not contribute to the prediction of VO2max.

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to investigate the structural capacity of aggregate base materials stabilized with triaxial geogrid placed in a full-scale pavement involving control, or unstabilized, sections. Field testing was performed on a roadway in northeastern Utah that was 16 km (10 miles) long and included 10 test sections, seven stabilized sections and three control sections, each having five test locations. The pavement structure was comprised of a hot mix asphalt layer overlying an untreated aggregate base layer of varying thickness, depending on the test section. Except for the control sections, one or two layers of geogrid were incorporated into portions of the pavement structure at different locations. Falling-weight deflectometer testing and dynamic cone penetrometer testing were used to evaluate the structural capacity of the aggregate base layer in each pavement section. For data analysis, the Rohde's method was applied in conjunction with the 1993 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials pavement design guide methodology, and the Area under the Pavement Profile (AUPP) method was applied in conjunction with a mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis. Statistical analyses were then performed to enable comparisons of the test sections. Field results indicated that the asphalt layer thickness was consistently 140 mm (5.5 in.) at all 10 test sections, and the base layer thickness varied from 360 mm (14 in.) to 510 mm (20 in.). The results of the statistical analyses indicated that the majority of the 45 possible pairwise comparisons among the test sections were not statistically significant, meaning that variations in the presence and position of triaxial geogrid at those sections did not appear to affect the structural capacity. The remaining comparisons, however, were statistically significant and involved the test sections with the highest structural capacity. While one of these was unexpectedly an unstabilized control section, the others were constructed using one or two layers of geogrid in the base layer. In addition to being statistically significant, the observed differences were also practically important. Increases in the observed base layer coefficient from 0.12 to 0.18 correspond to an increase in the allowable number of equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) from 5.9 million to 19.2 million at the research site, while decreases in the observed AUPP value from 340 mm (13.37 in.) to 213 mm (8.38 in.) correspond to an increase in the allowable number of ESALs from 3.7 million to 17.3 million at the research site. These results indicate that, when geogrid reinforcement is compatible with the given aggregate base material and proper construction practices are followed, statistically significant and practically important increases in pavement design life can be achieved.

The recent American college of Sports Medicine Position Stand concerning the quantity and quality of exercise for developing cardiovascular fitness (1) suggests a need for more information concerning the rate of improvement in aerobic power as a function of age. Therefore, the purpose of this retrospective study was to assess whether the change in maximal oxygen uptake (AVO2max) following endurance training varies as a function of age. Subjects were healthy men (N=277) and women (N=161), ranging in age from 20-72 years, who completed an endurance training program (= 3-5 months) between 1972 and 1987. After adjusting for pre-training VO2max.(ml-kg-1-min-1) there was a significant negative correlation between OVO2max and age in both men (r = -0.31, p < 0.01) and women(r = -0.37, p < 0.01). When expressed as %OVO2max (L•min-1), the resultsrevealed the same age trend as that observed for the relative unit. Since the AVO2max after =3-5 months of training decreased as a function of age, this study supported the contention that training adaptations may be attenuated with increased age.

Abstract:
Full-depth, precast panel deck systems are becoming more common in bridge installation and repair. The objective of these systems is to achieve the performance of cast-in-place systems while simultaneously saving time and money. The structural behavior of these systems has been the subject of scrutiny in recent research. The Utah Department of Transportation demolished a steel I-girder bridge containing a precast panel deck system and provided two full-scale specimens for this project. Destructive testing was performed at Utah State University on the specimens to investigate three failure modes: flexural, beam shear, and punching shear. Finite-element models were created using ANSYS software to replicate experimental behavior. Overall, it was found that the elastic, post-elastic, and ultimate behavior of the full-scale bridge sections containing precast panel deck systems can be accurately predicted in analytical models. Another aspect of this project was to investigate changes in dynamic behavior as the system was subjected to flexural yield and failure. Point loads were applied and removed in increments, and dynamic testing was conducted at each load level. It was found that significant damage is somewhat noticeable by monitoring the changes in natural frequencies.
