Potocki, Piotr. "The Catholic Church and Scottish politics, c.1878-c.1939." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12246.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the significance of Catholicism as a political force in Scotland in the years between the restoration of the ecclesiastical hierarchy in 1878 and the Spanish Civil War, exploring the ways in which the Roman Catholic Church sought to assert its presence in Scottish politics and society. Through an examination of the power of the Scottish Church, its affiliated lay organisations and the political attitudes of the laity, this study redresses a historiographical imbalance which has focussed traditionally on the Church's denominational interests in education. Abstract:
Liturgical interpretation is the application of the methods of patristic and medieval biblical exegesis to public worship. This thesis examines for the first time its importance in the religious culture of Scotland during a period of renaissance and reformation. The first section defines the genres and method involved with reference to the most popular liturgical commentary of that time, the Rationale divinorum officiorum of William Durandus of Mende (c.1230-1296). The reasons for the decline of this genre and its neglect by modern scholarship are then explored. The central section of the thes

Rhodes, Elizabeth. "The Reformation in the burgh of St Andrews : property, piety and power." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/4476.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of the Reformation on the estates of ecclesiastical institutions and officials based in St Andrews. It argues that land and wealth were redistributed and power structures torn apart, as St Andrews changed from Scotland's Catholic ecclesiastical capital to a conspicuously Protestant burgh. The rapid dispersal of the pre-Reformation church's considerable ecclesiastical lands and revenues had long-term ramifications for the lives of local householders, for relations between religious and secular authorities, and for St Andrews' viability as an urban community. Full text
Abstract:
The Second Vatican Council set out a new vision of the ecclesial relationship between ordained and lay people in the Roman Catholic Church within its understanding of the church as the people of God. This is an important issue for the church’s self-understanding and mission; it also has practical implications for the Catholic Church in Scotland as it faces a sharp decline in vocations to the ordained priesthood, raising questions about the relative roles of priests and lay people. Dioceses are developing plans for closing and merging parishes based on projected numbers of priests, in an effort

Abstract:
A dispute between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper beginning in the 1960s reveals two competing worldviews within the contemporary Roman Catholic Church with regard to Catholic-Jewish relations: An ontological approach, represented by Ratzinger, which understands the truth to be eternal, unchanging and handed down from above, and a historicalphenomenological approach, represented by Kasper, which understands human experience as dynamically shaping conceptions of the truth. Abstract:
The design of the complex addresses Roman Catholic and pre-Christian legends, symbols, and signs. It transforms them based on our understandings of ourselves and our universe today. Saint Barbara is a Roman Catholic Church located on a suburban site in Chantilly, Virginia on the eastern coast of the United States of America. Chantilly was chosen because it has been victimized by a lack of comprehensive planning. The complex is composed of a bell tower, baptistry, Sunday school, sanctuary, outdoor funeral chapel, cemetery, and parking area. The church of Saint Barbara addresses the dichotomy

Sullivan, John William. "Catholic education : distinctive and inclusive." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10019120/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the coherence of the claim that Catholic education is both distinctive and inclusive. It clarifies the implications for church schools of a Catholic worldview and situates Catholic schools in the context of (and subjects them to scrutiny in the light of) alternative liberal philosophical perspectives in our society. Central questions explored are: what is the nature of, foundation for and implications of the claim that Catholic schools offer a distinctive approach to education? To what extent does the claim to distinctiveness entail exclusiveness or allow for inclusiveness?

Abstract:
This thesis argues that the processes of ministerial formation, which have become a feature of the world churches, have never been sanctioned by the Church of Scotland in the Gaidhealtachd. However, new developments in the Church of Scotland's programme for the theological education and training of its ministry, and current trends in the Gaidhealtachd combine to create a unique opportunity for the Church of Scotland to adopt a policy supportive of the Gaelic language and culture, and to provide a ministry specifically trained for issues facing the Church's mission in the Gaidhealtachd. This thesis examines three major themes of Catholic education in Northern Ireland. Firstly, the thesis analyses the Catholic authorities' efforts to maintain clerical control of Catholic schools in Northern Ireland from 1921 to the Education (Northern Ireland) Order of October 1993, concentrating upon the events surrounding the major education laws of 1923,1925,1930,1947 and 1968, and the Orders - in - Council of 1989 and 1993. The thesis also estimates the financial and educational price paid by Northern Ireland's Catholics to maintain a network of autonomous denominational schools. Secondly,

Abstract:
Two propositions are advanced in the present study: firstly, national, not theological, attitudes have been the main influence on Scottish church music from the earliest days to the present; secondly, the present vitality of Scottish music can be traced back to a 19th-century search for musical excellence in church services by clergy, precentors and organists. Until the 19th century Scottish church music reflected a national indifference to music in general. Neither in pre-Reformation nor post-Reformation times is there completely convincing evidence of high-quality secular musical activity be
