Abstract:
In 2010, several new sites of the dune snail Cernuella neglecta (Draparnaud, 1805) were documented relatively far from their previously known sites in the Czech Republic. Cernuella neglecta was found at these new sites in front of villas, on dry ruderal meadows and in urban areas. The anthropic origin of those populations is probable. C. neglecta is another land snail species of southern European origin that is spreading to the new sites during last few years.

Damage caused by the white snail Cernuella virgata (Da Costa, 1778) was for the first time observed in vegetable crops in Serbia during the summers of 2011 and 2012. In this country, serious damage to vegetable crops is usually caused by slugs, while snails do not normally cause any significant harm. Typical xerophilic snail species in the genera Cernuella, Xerolenta and Theba cause damage even more rarely since they are limited to wild flora in uncultivated and ruderal areas, and local outbreaks occur seldom and only in forage leguminous crops. The species C. virgata was for the first time fo

AbstractTwelve batches of the mollusc Cernuella (Cernuella) virgata (Mollusca: Helicidae) were deposited monthly directly on faeces containing first-stage larvae of Neostrongylus linearis, so that they were naturally infected. Every two weeks the molluscs were examined to study the larval development of N. linearis. No correlation was found between the number of first-stage larvae of N. linearis on the faeces and the number of total larvae and third-stage larvae which developed in the snails. However, a negative correlation was found between temperature and the days needed to reach the differe

The dispersal of the land snail Cernuella virgata was measured in South Australia by mark-release- recapture. Dispersal was not influenced by the paint used for marking, displacement of the snails during the marking process or crowding at release points. Snails moved out of a well-grazed permanent pasture to adjacent weedy roadside vegetation in early summer. They returned to the pasture in autumn. Factors which might direct this movement are discussed. Average movements varied between 0.1 and 0.4 m day-'. Some snails moved more than 25 m in one month in spring-summer and 50 m in 3 months in a

Cernuella virgata (Da Costa, 1778) has been recorded for the first time in Turkmenistan. The species inhabits Ashgabat and its suburbs: Bikrova and Berzengi. The natural range of C. virgata includes the western Mediterranean, the British Isles, Crimea and the vicinity of Novorossiysk. The authors hypothesize that C. virgata was introduced from Europe in the 1990s, when a substantial number of seedlings were imported along with soil for urban landscaping projects. All biotopes inhabited by C. virgata are located along roads and near residential buildings, both in single-story and multi-story ar

Abstract:
The response of three snails (Cernuella virgata, Helix aspersa, and Cepaea nemoralis) and of the slug Arion sp. to herbivore feces was tested. The fresh feces of herbivores were not attractive; however, the feces of small ruminants were less repulsive than those of cattle or horses. The scale of decreasing positive response towards sheep or goat feces for the land snails was C. nemoralis, H. aspersa, and C. virgata. The banded individuals of the latter were more attracted to feces than the unbanded ones.

Abstract:
The shell carbonate of pre- and post-bomb samples of 2 species of terrestrial gastropods (Theba pisana and Cernuella virgata) sampled along the coast of Apulia, southern Italy, were dated using accelerator mass spectrometry and carbon stable isotopes were analyzed. The analyses show, for both species, significant anomalies in the radiocarbon age due to the possible presence of a 14C-depleted source of carbon in the formation of the shell aragonite. The magnitude of the age anomaly was quantified in the studied area to ∼1000 14C yr.
