A series of accident simulations were performed using INL's thermal hydraulics code RELAP5-3D to analyze steady-state and transient behavior of a sodium cooled fast reactor. The reactor chosen for this study was General Electric's S-PRISM, which is a 1,000 MWt pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor, designed for either an Oxide or Metal fueled core. The aim of this study was to understand and control the gasification rates in ammonium nitrate emulsion explosive using ammonium nitrate-sodium nitrite reaction. This reaction produces N2 gas which is the sensitizer in emulsion explosives. The NH4NO3-NaNO2 gassing reaction produces N2 gas and so the reaction could be followed by the pressure increase in a closed reaction vessel. The reaction is pH sensitive, so the role of pH was investigated in the pH range 2 to 5. Gasification reactions for unbuffered NH4NO3-NaNO2 reaction were found to be rapid below pH = 3 and maximum pressure was attained

The quenching characteristics of a range of concentrations of sodium polyacrylate, a commercially available polymer quenchant, have been studied. These solutions showed a stable film boiling stage the duration of which increased with increasing concentration. The principles of production for nitrocellulose have not changed much since the 19th century when it started being industrially produced for this purpose. The character of the nitrocellulose has a large effect on the end products abilities.
