Abstract:
The quest of this paper is to illuminate and celebrate Adichie’s Americanah as a text that opens our eyes to the challenges of African Diaspora in America. The need to offer different latitude of identity is aptly captured in Taya Zelase’s 2011 essay titled Afropolitanism, which has become a daring resurrection of debates that surrounds the ambiguity of contemporary African Diaspora. The need to analyse and interpret Afropolitanism as an emerging diaspora theory, which speaks to Africans diaspora was best located in the works of Adichie Chimamanda titled Americanah (2013). Indubitably, Adichie rebukes the dilemma of African Diaspora while at the same breath celebrates Africa as the ultimate space of identity and belonging. Locating itself within Afropolitanism theory as an emerging theory is a robust yardstick of interpreting textual response to the ambiguities of contemporary African Diaspora, the paper uses a close reading of Americanah to identify diasporic experiences, and how the characters negotiate them. By opening an honest conversation around the questions of belonging and identity, this study is instrumental in shedding light on the opaque sense of identity and the need for examining how modern African Diaspora negotiates the dehumanising aspect of Racism.

Indeed, gender and power discourses as ideological concessions have been investigated and reviewed from various perspectives by different scholars in the works of Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie. This paper offers a reappraisal of the views of the scholars essentially on the issues of gender and power in the selected works of Achebe and Adichie, viz: Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah and There Was a Country and Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. The work, therefore, gives a reappraisal of the thoughts of scholars and presents a coalescence of their views, offering a distillation and filtration of the ideas they proffer on the selected works and projecting a comparatively valid arbitration and settlement where the views of the scholars are going inordinately radical and amorphous.The paper views that the opinion of the scholars on the discourses of gender and power specifically on the selected works of Achebe and Adichie are incongruous and asymmetrical while some of the views are inordinately on the verge of radicalism. This work, however, proffers a comparatively balanced perspective on the diverse views of the scholars with a view to navigating an even horizon.

In March of 2017, best-selling Nigerian author and feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in an interview with Britain’s Channel 4, was asked whether being a trans woman makes one any less of a ‘real woman?’ In the clip, which went viral shortly thereafter, Adichie responded by saying ‘When people talk about, “Are trans women women?” my feeling is trans women are trans women.’ Echoing the essentialist, predominantly white Global Northern, feminist politics of trans-exclusionary feminists (TERFs), by implying that trans women are not ‘real’ women because, as she assumes, they benefited from male privilege, Adichie set off a social media maelstrom. The publicised responses to her comments largely came from feminists and trans women in the Global North, and though many trans people from the African continent responded, with hashtags such as #ChimamandaKilledME, very few of these received any attention. As the hashtag suggests, for trans people living on the African continent, given the general lack of recourse to rights, Adichie’s words as an African writer carry considerable weight. Given this, the absence of media attention is curious. This article offers a recentring, by focusing on those voices, maligned in the broader debate – trans people from the African continent. I argue that while Adichie might be stumbling over the questions that lie at the heart of TERF politics (what does it mean to be a woman? and does it matter how a person arrives at being a woman?), trans women on the African continent have been busy reconstituting the terms of the terrain.

Abstract:
In the novel Adichie uncovers the characters’ struggles based on the loss of Identity and Human values which is basically the result of the Nigerian civil war. The characters strive to bring back what they lost due to the war. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born much later after the Nigerian civil war of 1966-1969. Chimamanda Adichie had the interest to revive history of the war; she used her imaginative talent in bringing what she hadn’t experienced. The novel Half of a Yellow Sun is a literary work which uses the theory of post-colonialism or post-colonial studies, it is a term that is used to analyze and explain the legacy of colonialism through the study of a particular book. Colonialism did not happen during the colonial era only but extended to after independence of the countries that were colonized. The novel Half of a Yellow Sun shows the effect of colonialism after independence of Nigeria. Adichie believes that by bringing back the issue of the war, the growing generation would understand more about the war. According to her in Nigeria the history taught in the primary and secondary schools is not complete, some parts were removed and nobody is allowed to talk about it. So through the novel, she tries to go through history to see what has happened, so that she can make the young generation understand history better. The book opens with a poem by Chinua Achebe about the Nigerian civil war.

Abstract:
The African continent today is laced with some of the most intractable conflicts, most of them based on ethnic nationalism. More often than not, this has led to poor governance, unequal distribution of resources, state collapse, high attrition of human resources, economic decline, and inter-ethnic clashes. This essay seeks to examine Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's through the lens of ethnic conflict. It begins by tracing the history and manifestations of ethnic stereotypes and ethnic cleavage in African imaginaries. The essay then argues that group loyalty in Nigeria led to the creation of 'biafranization' or 'fear of the Igbo factor' in the Hausa–Fulani and the various other ethnic groups that sympathized with them; a fear that crystallized into a thirty-month state-sponsored bulwark campaign aimed at finding a 'final solution' to a 'problem population'. Finally, the essay contends that Adichie's anatomizes the impact of ethnic cleavage on the civilian Igbo population during the Nigeria–Biafra civil war. Adichie, I argue, participates in an ongoing re-invention of how Africans can extinguish the psychology of fear that they are endangered species when they live side by side with people who do not belong to their 'tribe'.

Home and motherhood are tightly interwoven, particularly in the dominant conceptualizations of home as a physical and emotional refuge from the public world. However, a closer look into these concepts helps question the naturalization of both motherhood and home, revealing them as shaped by complex lived experiences and relations instead. I argue that such a rethinking of home and motherhood beyond essentialist discourse is prominent in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s postcolonial novel Half of a Yellow Sun. Drawing on concepts and theories from the fields of gender studies and geography, and taking into account the postcolonial, Nigerian context of the novel, I address how Adichie’s 2006 piece of historical fiction thematizes the intersection point of motherhood and home as a relational practice. Adichie provides alternative conceptualizations of motherhood and home through her focus on performative, ritualized mothering practices that also function as relational home-making practices and that stretch beyond gender and biological relations. Through the central ambivalence that emerges in the novel when the female protagonist chooses and practices a traditional mother role but simultaneously does not correspond to the dominant Nigerian ideal of a mother, Adichie destabilizes binary views of both home and of motherhood.

O presente artigo busca refletir sobre relações entre literatura e história, ao analisar aspectos sobre colonização e identidade no conto A historiadora obstinada, do livro No seu Pescoço, da escritora nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Na leitura do conto, percebe-se a representação do choque cultural entre o colonizador e o colonizado, bem como a forma como a identidade cultural africana é alterada, até que haja uma contemporânea desmistificação da história oficial do colonizador pelo olhar da personagem Grace. O conto, publicado em 2017, aponta para a discussão sobre a necessidade de trabalhar outro olhar sobre a colonização de países africanos como a Nigéria, desta vez a partir da visão do colonizado. O estudo foi norteado pela relação entre literatura e história na perspectiva teórica de Linda Hutcheon, com o livro Poética do Pós-Modernismos, e de Roger Chartier, no livro A História Cultural Entre Práticas e Representações. Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar Purple Hibiscus, de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2012), a partir da perspectiva da ecocrítica feminista, com embasamentos em Alaimo (2010), Brandão (1997, 2003, 2017, 2019), Gaard (2017) e Walker (1997), com referências também a outros autores a autoras. A análise literária aborda a integração entre os seres – humanos e mais que humanos –, considerando que a natureza não é um cenário, mas parte integrante dos eventos e sentimentos relacionados às personagens. O romance trata da trajetória da protagonista em meio a um contexto conservador e patriarcal de opressão, violência, discriminação e embates culturais.

O presente artigo pretende evidenciar através do romance Americanah (2013), da nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, de qual forma um elemento formador da identidade: o cabelo, é docilizado para que a adaptação da protagonista, uma mulher negra, africana e imigrante, possa ocorrer na sociedade americana. Para tanto, utilizamos as ideias de autores pós-coloniais acerca do que foi o colonialismo e como ele se atualiza sob o termo neocolonial. Também discutimos como o romance corrobora a crítica pós-colonial, aqui entendida como as teorias que denunciam os problemas causados pelo colonialismo nas sociedades das ex-colônias. Por fim, acreditamos que a literatura de Adichie funciona como um mecanismo de denúncia do neocolonial e como propulsor do debate acerca de preconceitos advindos da empreitada colonial.

I choose her work Dear Ijeawele, Or, A Feminist Manifesto In Fifteen Suggestions, as it gives suggestion for parenting in a feminist manner. A series of personal letter accommodated in a book are refreshing take on parenting and can be studied as an initial guide to understand feminism as an ideology. My main focus with this paper is to focus on two different kinds of parenting suggested by her and by Lois Gould, from her short story The story of X, where she creates a narrative revolving around gender-neutral parenting, and how these two can be read together to give a refreshing take on parenting, which is radical in nature because it dissects the norms.

No século XXI, produções literárias africanas têm se configurado comumente como fontes significativas para auxiliar a compreensão de causas e consequências de eventos históricos<strong>. </strong>Dentre elas, destaca-se o romance <em>Half of a Yellow Sun</em> (2006a)<em>, </em>de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Nessa obra, Adichie aborda problemáticas vividas por seus personagens durante o período da Guerra de Biafra, na Nigéria. Este artigo objetiva ilustrar alguns dos entrelaçamentos literários arquitetados por Adichie que suscitam questões de raça, feminismo e nacionalismo. Assim, as discussões levantadas aqui são amparadas nos Estudos Pós-coloniais a partir de pressupostos de Thomas Bonnici (2000), dentre outros. Como uma de suas conclusões, o artigo sublinha a importância do caráter interventivo da escrita pós-colonial, ao propiciar, por exemplo, reflexões acerca de eventos negativos do passado, para que não se reprisem.

This article focuses on the first novel by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Purple Hibiscus (2003). It examines how religious prejudice is encoded in the account of the book’s autodiegetic narrator, a fifteen-year-old girl whose father is a violent, extremist Igbo Catholic. Based on a close reading of the text, the essay argues that an analysis of the novel’s use of speech and thought presentation may contribute to the assessment of the main character’s evolving ideological stance. It is suggested that the resulting appraisal of the narrator’s development provides key insights into the interpretation of the book.

Abstract Described as one of the leading voices of her generation, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has become one of the many African authors who through their narratives have succeeded in challenging the literary canon both in Europe and North America while redefining African literature from the diaspora. Her specific use of the English language as well as transcultural writing strategies allow Adichie to skilfully represent what it means to live as a “translated being”. In her collection of short stories, The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), and her latest novel, Americanah (2013), which were greatly influenced by her own experiences as what she has referred to as “an inhabitant of the periphery”, Adichie depicts the way in which different Nigerian characters live in-between Nigeria and America. In this regard, her characters’ transatlantic journeys imply a constant movement between several languages and cultural backgrounds which result in cultural and linguistic translation.

Na narrativa, encontramos nuances das discussões de gênero, correntes na escrita de mulheres ocidentais e também orientais, onde estão postos questionamentos acerca das expectativas sociais sobre as mulheres, bem como sub-textos no enredo, que apresentam o corpo como canal central a partir do qual as personagens experienciam a diáspora. O corpo, gendrado e racializado na experiência transnacional, é o meio por onde as personagens constroem novas subjetividades. No presente artigo, com enfoque na protagonista Ifemelu e no seu exercício da escrita sobre a experiência diaspórica, olhamos para as formas em que o gênero, o corpo e a raça se apresentam interseccionados na vivência da protagonista e nas reflexões que traz no seu blog. Using the Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this article seeks to carry out a theoretically founded analysis of two extracts from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun to decode both her world view and ideology behind her writing for a better understanding of the whole novel with a view to making her message accessible to the laymen. The quantitative research method employed by the study has helped to recap the linguistic features of the analyzed excerpts in a statistical table paving the way to their interpretation via the qualitative method. The study has interestingly arrived at impressive results. Among others, it is to be highlighted that Adichie has written Half of a Yellow Sun to get important messages across. To descend to particulars, the analysis has unveiled that unkindness, wickedness, violence, heartlessness and mistrustfulness are some of the evils that the Nigeria-Biafra war has resulted into. As a result, by writing this award winning novel, Adichie aims at giving advice to her contemporaries and, more precisely, to the Nigerian current and future political leaders for the country brighter future. Adichie’s selections of modality in the studied excerpts reveal the possibility of new developments of the bygone civil war. The high rate of circumstantial adjuncts has contributed to improve the texts experiential density, and complements other strategies used by Adichie to make her novel very well written in mode. Indeed, these are just some of the results the present research work has arrived at; more remain to be discovered in the section devoted to the interpretation of findings in this paper. The study has interestingly opened up to such further research horizons as experiential meaning, textual meaning, pragmatic transfer, code switching, code mixing to name but just a few of them.

Neste estudo analiso as obras Mulheres de Cinzas, do escritor moçambicano Mia Couto e Americanah, da escritora nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ancorada nas teorias Pós-coloniais sob o enfoque da resistência e da subversão a um modo único de ver a linguagem e a identidade das personagens que compõem a narrativa. Objetivo apresentar a importância do conceito de escritura que abarca relações éticas e estéticas que se presumem no ato de ler e é norteada pelos sentidos que se constroem nas condições sociais e culturais diversas pressupostas na leitura (Barthes, 2004). Devido à presença de movimentos políticos e culturais centralizadores viso desconstruir, com o auxílio da escritura dupla de Adichie e Couto, as tentativas de manter a leitura e a escrita subordinadas a determinadas utilidades sociais e históricas, dando espaço ao diferente e tratando o texto como híbrido e multilíngue. Para tanto conto com o poder destas duas narrativas contemporâneas que se caracterizam pela habilidade de subverter, de alterar e reconstruir sentidos que a tradição cultural produz. Ao entender que a leitura torna-se assertiva na medida em que a escritura se constitui como lugar de deslizamentos entre múltiplos e distintos universos, percebo que esse fenômeno ocorre por meio de estranhamentos, concordâncias, apropriações, pactos e rupturas uma vez que a escritura apresenta traços de resistência essenciais para a subversão dos discursos hegemônicos. Assim, entendo que essa escritura múltipla instrumentaliza a linguagem utilizada por Adichie e Couto, de modo a torná-la ferramenta de poder.

This article seeks to explore the discourse-semantics of two selected excerpts from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah with a focus on reference chains study. The choice to focus on studying reference chains in the selected excerpts aims at first appraising the way Adichie has used them to realize texture within her studied texts. It second aims at finding the extent to which references have contributed to the encoding of underlying meanings therein. To arrive at this, the research has appealed to the mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology. Through the quantitative methodology, the data obtained after analyses have been summarized organized and presented statistically in an informative way. The qualitative methodology ensued has allowed to give sense to the most interpretable data collected. Indeed, the research has interestingly arrived at impressive results. Among several others, the research has revealed that the studied texts are highly cohesive with endophoric references largely predominating over the other reference types. Using such cohesive ties as Adichie has done, has allowed her texts not only to stick together but also to be highly readable and flow logically. Moreover, the extensive use of endophoric references, as witnessed in the studied texts, is revelatory of their mode which is archetypal of a monologic written text. In other respects, the considerable number of exophoric references in the first excerpt reveals its tenor dimension. Such a linguistic feature indicates that it was produced in a context of immediate face-to-face feedbacks with language accompanying action. On the other hand, the fewer number of the same reference type in the second excerpt reveals its field and unveils that it is a written reflective text reconstructing an experience. Drawing upon the theoretically founded analysis of the selected excerpts and the interpretation of the collected data arrived at, the research opens up to such further investigation areas of the systemic functional linguistics as the interpersonal meaning, the experiential meaning, and the textual meaning.

<em>The interconectivity of language in the analysis of ideological schemas of gender and power is remarkable. In every piece of texts, language is employed as an expression of ideology. Hence, there is no linguistic expression that is ideologically empty. Language is inspirable from the gender and power preoccupations of Chinua Achebe’s There Was a Country and Chimamanda Adiche’s Half of a Yellow Sun. In this paper, it is made succinct that both Achebe and Adichie deploy their English linguistic prowess with their traditional Igbo language colorations as an expression of power and gender discourses. Indeed, while it is deduced that Achebe, through the use of rhetorical and proverbial expressions, pursued a somewhat patriarchal gender and power ideological inclination in his memoir; Adichie, in her use of sublime language, exhibited her feminine gender belief in a rather subtle manner. Evidently, the two authors’ use of the English language with a heavy Igbo language influence is an index to the fact that language, apart from being a powerful means of expression of a writer’s ideological idiosyncrasy, is a source of power on its own; an instrument which both Achebe and Adichie deployed to show their different gender inclinations and power discourses in the selected texts.</em>

Women writers in Africa have enjoyed wider audience especially in higher institutions where the curriculum includes African Women Writers, Gender Studies and other related courses. African women writers may focus on a variety of subject matters but what is common to their literary art is that they concentrate on the experience of women. This article focuses on how the authors use their literary art to portray women’s experiences in their social melieu. Nawal El Sadaawi, Mariama Ba, Zaynab Alkali and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are women writers from Africa. The first three women are older and from Moslem background. Adichie is younger and from a Christian background. The choice made of the novels of these women is due to the recurrent problem of being a woman everywhere. In contemporary times women are still treated differently just because they are women. However, it has been observed that there is nothing intrinsic in women that depict them as the bad or inferior species of human beings. This article focuses on the commonality of style used by the select African novelists in couching the predicament of women in the African society. The novels chosen in this research are El Sadaawi’s Woman at Point Zero and God Dies by the Nile; Ba’s So Long a Letter and Scarlet Song; Alkali’s The Stillborn and The Virtuous Woman and Adichie’s Americanah.

<p>O presente trabalho objetiva uma análise dos elementos religiosos que norteiam e servem como mecanismos temporais no romance <em>Hibisco Roxo (2011)</em>, da nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Publicado em 2003, o primeiro romance da autora aborda um núcleo familiar permeado pela violência doméstica que se utiliza do pretexto religioso como uma das maneiras de infligir agressões. O personagem Eugene tenta seguir com rigor os preceitos católicos e a cultura inglesa e, quando seus familiares não os executam com perfeição, provoca-lhe uma ira que o faz optar por violentá-los com agressões físicas. Em contrapartida, há o seu pai, Papa-Nnukwu, um ancião tradicionalista que não permite interferências em seus costumes igbos; e Tia Ifeoma, que consegue transitar pelas duas religiões – tradicional e católica – e extrair o que de melhor elas podem oferecer. Utilizaremos os estudos de Hall (2003), Bonnici (2009) e Said (2007) sobre o choque cultural de culturas diferentes e a imposição da metrópole sobre a colônia, visto que a Nigéria foi por muito tempo colônia inglesa. The use of the English language for literary creation has been the bane of Nigerian literature. Nigeria has a very complex linguistic system; as a result, its citizens communicate either in their indigenous languages or in English, depending on the situation in which they find themselves. The use of English in Nigerian literature in general and prose fiction in particular is influenced by both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. In their attempt to offer solutions to the problems of language in literary expression, Nigerian novelists adapt English to varying linguistic and socio-cultural contexts. This has resulted in experimentation and the employment of various creative-stylistic strategies and devices in prose fiction. Our focus in this essay is on the conditioning influences of situational variables on the language and styles of Nigerian novelists, with Chimamanda Adichie and Chinua Achebe as a case study. We shall examine and explicate how situational variables influence and impose constraints on the language and styles of novelists, and how they adapt English, which is in contact with the various indigenous languages, to the varying local Nigerian situations and experiences.

Abstract:
RESUMO Este trabalho propõe-se a analisar a obraHibisco Roxo(2011), de Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie - romance permeado por tensões de raça e de gênero, provocadas pelo imperialismo inglês na Nigéria, sob o prisma dos conflitos políticos e socioculturais ambientados no capitalismo. Partindo do conceito deepistemicídio, proposto por Carneiro (2005), com base em Foucault (1979) e Sousa Santos (1995), verificamos, nas práticas multilíngues, os valores atribuídos às línguas originais, com destaque para o Igbo, e à língua do colonizador na implementação e na vigência dos empreendimentos colonialista e imperialista. Considerando que a escrita de Adichie (2011) permite outra leitura possível dos conflitos vivenciados pela sociedade nigeriana atual, há, no âmbito linguístico, evidências de que a língua inglesa, elemento constitutivo da colonização, representaria, a partir das práticas linguísticas das personagens, uma vinculação ao processo imperialista - subjacente à ação do capitalismo sob o recente término da colonização. Já as práticas linguísticas do Igbo representariam estratégia de resistência, através do resgate às tradições ancestrais, como via de rasurar o epistemicídio, tensionando as estratégias de apagamento da cultura Igbo. Há, assim, um jogo de poder no qual a língua exerce um papel importante na marcação simbólica de processos de dominação/assimilação e/ou oposição/resistência sociocultural, ambos atravessados pela religião.

Este texto apresenta um percurso discursivo de análise que toma como ponto de ancoragem a “composição material”, trabalhada na relação entre a capa e os contos do livro No seu pescoço, de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Retomando conceitos fundantes de Michel Pêcheux, o percurso aqui apresentado vai delineando relações teóricoanalíticas que mostram a potência do dispositivo de leitura concebido pelo autor, em seus desdobramentos propostos por Eni Orlandi. Ressaltando o primado do gesto de descrição, vou procedendo à deslinearização discursiva na “imbricação das diferentes materialidades significantes” e chego ao funcionamento da “resistência simbólica”, marcada em contrastes diversos por meio dos elementos significantes materialmente distintos.

Este trabalho discute como as narrativas em abismo são construídas nas obras Terra sonâmbula, de Mia Couto, e Meio sol amarelo, de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie e como os personagens dessas narrativas descrevem suas experiências em tempos de guerra. Especialmente sob a perspectiva dos estudos de Jeanne Marie Gagnebin (2009) acerca da escrita como manutenção de lembrança para as futuras gerações, verifica-se que tais personagens elegem a escrita como forma de elaboração do passado e para organizar sua memória. São, portanto, personagens-autores que, no seu fazer literário, dão voz aos vivos e mortos das guerras, apagando sua própria voz.

Abstract:
O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar o romance Neighbours (1995) da escritora moçambicana Lília Momplé. A narrativa se passa em Moçambique, no ano de 1985, em três apartamentos marcados centralmente por mulheres, e tem como pano de fundo a organização de um raid assassino por agentes do Apartheid da África do Sul, junto a moçambicanos, a fim de desestabilizar o governo da época e trazer questionamentos ao povo. Em nossa leitura, pretendemos discutir o papel do silêncio das personagens femininas, amparando-nos nos textos de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2015), bell hooks (2017), Michelle Perrot (2005), Rebecca Solnit (2017), Simone de Beauvoir (2008), entre outras obras teóricas.
