Abstract:
The fate of Susan Pevensie has been one of the most controversial and interesting topics of debate about The Chronicles of Narnia since readers realized that she was no longer a friend of Narnia. Many critics have condemned C. S. Lewis for being sexist, thus making the stereotypically feminine Susan with her love of parties, nylons, and lipstick ineligible for salvation. This thesis proposes to look at Susan's choices and fate from the perspective of moral imagination. It argues that Lewis did not bar Susan from heaven to belittle femininity, but rather to comment on the consequences of choice, belief, and the vital exercise of moral imagination. Placing Susan in a fairy-tale world highlights the differences between what is real and what seems impossible and pushes both Susan and the readers to develop their own moral imagination in the pursuit of belief in the truth. Looking at Susan's ambiguous fate and comparing her story to other characters' journeys throughout the series shows readers the power of the imagination and offers hope that Susan, like the rest of her siblings, may make it to Aslan's Country after all.

Abstract:
In the present study, teaching guides to The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S Lewis are assessed and evaluated with the help from Ian McGrath’s Materials Evaluation and Design for Language Teaching. The study focuses on two complete teaching guides, one developed by an American language teacher and the other by the producers of the latest Narniamovie. Both of the guides were originally created for a native speaker context. However, in this dissertation ways of adapting these study guides to the goals expressed in the Swedish Curriculum (Lpo 94) and The National Syllabuses are explored. The result of my evaluation shows that both the selected guides are, with some adjustment, applicable to the education of English in Sweden. The conclusion is that the language-oriented parts of the teaching guides are valid to the Swedish curriculum and syllabuses of English, though they were developed for native speakers of English. The modules on moral education are also applicable, since value based education is fundamental in Swedish schools.

Abstract:
The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) est un célèbre recueil de sept romans, traditionnellement reconnus comme des œuvres de littérature de jeunesse et à l’origine du genre fantasy. L’un des intérêts majeurs de ces livres réside dans leur substrat symbolique, exprimé dans le texte par un double niveau de lecture qui évoque la tradition chrétienne. Notre thèse consiste en l’analyse d’un corpus incluant les originaux en anglais et les traductions françaises, publiées sous le titre de Le Monde de Narnia (2005)Sous l’égide de la traductologie de corpus (Corpus-based Translation Studies) et par une démarche interdisciplinaire empruntant des outils à la pragmatique, à l’analyse critique du discours (Critical Discourse Analysis, CDA) et à la narratologie, notre étude vise à mettre en évidence les marqueurs du point de vue idéologique, à travers une analyse semi-automatique, qualitative et quantitative. Parmi ces marqueurs sont notamment analysés les déictiques, la modalité, la transitivité, les choix lexicaux et la prosodie sémantique. Les parties du discours correspondant à ces marqueurs sont analysées notamment en lien avec l’instance du narrateur, de par son rôle clé pour l’idéologie dans le texte, et de régie dans la focalisation. Notre analyse porte une attention particulière à la dimension du sacré et aux thèmes de la violence, de la mort et du genre en traduction de littérature de jeunesse.La littérature de jeunesse, toujours plus ou moins caractérisée par un but éducatif, tout comme les livres qui constituent notre corpus, s’avère un véhicule axiologique puissant, qui reflète les valeurs qu’une société défend et transmet à un moment donné. L’instance du narrateur est au cœur de cette négociation entre systèmes linguistiques, culturels et axiologiques, qui s’exprime dans une dynamique dialogique impliquant tous les acteurs de la chaîne du livre. Notre travail a montré notamment que les traductions françaises ont tendance à affaiblir le message religieux, éloignant le regard du lecteur ou rendant flous les contours de l’espace. Dans l’ensemble, l’idéologie du texte cible est caractérisée par un certain nombre d’écarts par rapport au texte source et met en avant d’autres valeurs, pourtant présentes, elles aussi, dans l’original.Ce travail de recherche montre une méthode permettant d’aborder le texte dans le but d’une meilleure compréhension des enjeux qui sous-tendent la traduction, et en particulier la traduction de l’idéologie et du point de vue dans les livres pour enfants
The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) is a well-known collection of seven novels, usually seen as belonging to the genre of Children’s literature and Fantasy. One of the main characteristics of the novels lies in their symbolic dimension, which evokes the Christian tradition and is expressed in the text through a second layer of meaning. Our thesis involves the analysis of a corpus including the English originals of The Chronicles of Narnia and their respective French translations, entitled Le Monde de Narnia (2005).The study draws on corpus-based translation studies and uses an interdisciplinary approach, in particular pragmatics, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and narratology. Through a combination of qualitative analysis and semi-automatic, quantitative analysis, it explores the ways in which a number of markers of ideological point of view are used in the translations by comparison with the initial texts. The main markers which make the object of discussion are: deictics, modality, transitivity, lexical choice and semantic prosody. The discourse features related to these markers are analysed with respect to the narrative instance of the narrator, which has a key role in conveying the ideology of the text and which controls the focalization process. Our analysis draws particular attention to the sacred dimension in the texts, as well as to the themes of violence, death and gender in children’s literature.Children’s literature is usually characterised by an educational goal, and the Narnia books prove to be a powerful means to convey values within society, at a given moment in time. The narrator is at the centre of a negotiation between two linguistic, cultural and axiological systems. This negotiation is expressed by a dialogical dynamics involving all the actors taking part in the publication process. Our research reveals that the French translations tend to weaken the religious message of the original texts, distancing the reader or blurring space boundaries. Moreover, the ideology in the target texts is characterised by a number of discrepancies by comparison with the source texts; different values are given prominence, among those already present in the Narnia books.Using a method of analysis of translated texts, the thesis brings a contribution to the understanding of the challenges a translator may face when confronted with the task of translating ideology and point of view in books for children

Abstract:
In this thesis, I explore the uses to which children’s authors C.S. Lewis and Philip Pullman put the major biblical theme of the Fall (with passing commentary on Temptation, the precursor to the Fall) in their seminal children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia and the His Dark Materials trilogy. I argue that each author uses the subject of the Fall as a central theme in his series in order to inflect the dominant message of this biblical story (that humanity has fallen from perfection into sin) with their personal opinions on fundamental human questions concerning the nature of God, the difference between good and evil, and the metaphysical ‘rules’ that structure the universe and mankind’s place in it.1 In exploring these issues, I point out the ways in which Pullman and Lewis, in their drastically differing opinions as to the legitimacy of the worldview implicit in the original Bible story, are nevertheless both heavily dependant on the overwhelming influence that the Fall narrative has had on Western culture.

Escolhemos para análise o livro The Chronicles of Narnia: the Silver Chair (1953), do escritor C. S. Lewis, e suas traduções para a língua portuguesa “As Crônicas de Nárnia: a cadeira de prata” – tradução de Paulo Mendes Campos – e para a língua espanhola Las Crónicas de Narnia: la silla de plata – Tradução de María Rosa Duhart Silva. Selecionamos três vocábulos para análise, os quais se relacionam à representação das principais personagens femininas e a aspectos simbólicos da narrativa: Jill, Witch e owl. Estas são palavras-chave no corpus que compilamos e foram extraídas por meio de ferramentas específicas do software WordSmith Tools. Investigamos, então, os três vocábulos de acordo com seu cotexto (texto ao redor da palavra de busca) e com seu contexto. Para tal, levamos em consideração os dados fornecidos pelo programa, como o número de ocorrências dos vocábulos escolhidos no texto de partida (TP) e nos textos de chegada (TCs) e os pressupostos teóricos dos Estudos da Tradução Baseados em Corpus (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996). Os resultados das análises apontam para a criação de novos sentidos nos TCs de acordo com o léxico selecionado pelos tradutores, levando o leitor a conceituar de diferentes modos as personagens citadas, a partir de suas impressões ao ter acesso ao TC.
The present dissertation, based on subsidies from Corpus Linguistics consists of a study aimed at studying the lexicon of a literary work. We have chosen to analyze the book The Chronicles of Narnia: the Silver Chair (1953), by the writer C. S. Lewis, and its translations into the Portuguese language As Crônicas de Nárnia: a cadeira de prata – translated by Paulo Mendes Campos –, and into the Spanish language Las Crónicas de Narnia: la silla de plata – translated by María Rosa Duhart Silva. We have selected three words for analysis, which relate to the representation of the main female characters and the symbolic aspects of the narrative: Jill, Witch and owl. These are keywords in the corpus we compiled and they were extracted using specific tools from WordSmith Tools software. We then investigated the three words according to their co-text (text around the search word) and its context. To do so, we took into account the data provided by the program, such as the number of occurrences of the words chosen in the source text (ST) and in the target texts (TTs) and the theoretical assumptions of Corpus-based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996). The results of the analyzes point to the creation of new meanings in the TTs according to the lexicon selected by the translators, leading the reader to conceptualize the characters mentioned in different ways, from their impressions upon access to the TT.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human & Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations of the translation. By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro levels.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S. Lewis se Chronicles of Narnia beklee internasionaal ’n gevestigde plek in die kanon van kinder- en jeugliteratuur. Die reeks bestaan uit sewe boeke, waarvan slegs die eerste vier in Afrikaans vertaal is, naamlik Die Towenaar se Neef, Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas, Die Perd en sy Seun en Prins Kaspian. Volgens die uitgewer, Human & Rousseau, word daar nie verdere vertalings van die reeks beoog nie. Die drie onvertaalde boeke in die reeks is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle. Hierdie studie fokus hoofsaaklik op die praktiese vertaling van ’n gedeelte van The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Vermeer en Nord se Funksionalisme, Toury en Chesterman se vertaalnorme uit Deskriptiewe Vertaalstudies, Venuti se vervreemding en domestikering en Klingberg se kulturele konteksaanpassing dien as teoretiese raamwerk vir sowel die bespreking en ontleding van die bronteks as die vertaling. Nord se vier tipes vertaalprobleme dien as raamwerk vir die annotasies tot die vertaling. Deur ’n teoreties gebaseerde vertaling te doen word geïllustreer hoe teorie en praktyk by mekaar aansluit: die vertaler kies ’n algemene benadering en vertaalstrategieë, en word sodoende begelei tot konsekwente vertaalbesluite op makro- en mikrovlak.

Abstract:
The author of this study explored the works of C.S. Lewis as well as memoirs and scholarship concerning his work to illustrate his transformational leadership. Works reviewed included Lewis's fiction, such as his science fiction trilogy and his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as his works of nonfiction, such as essays that addressed social issues. The secondary aim for the author of this study was to determine whether the transformational qualities Lewis exhibited also existed in his characters. Transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework for the descriptive explanatory qualitative design. Essentially the study analyzed the primary works of Lewis and subsequent scholarship through the lens of transformational leadership. Data collected included document review, interviews with Lewis scholars, and observations. Synthesis of the data revealed that Lewis possessed the 4 qualities of transformational leadership established by Bass (1985). Derived from a blended evaluation of scholarship, observational data, and interview responses, findings indicated that Lewis exhibited the 4 qualities of transformational leadership: Idealized influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individual Consideration. In addition, Lewis created a transformational leader in Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia and depicted pseudotransformational leadership in both his science fiction trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia. The author of this study explored a contextual and historical view of Lewis as a veteran of World War I and a voice of hope during World War II. During the period pseudotransformational leadership existed in the reality of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime and echoed in the literature of Lewis in the N.I.C.E. organization from the science fiction trilogy and Shift from The Chronicles of Narnia. Recommendations for further study encourage future scholars to expand the roster of transformational leaders to include artists and thinkers and to examine various aspects of Lewis yet needing research.

Abstract:
This dissertation treats the theory and practice of C. S. Lewis's theological imagination, focussing upon the imaginative use he made of his professional expertise in medieval and renaissance literature. Its approach is principally expository rather than an evaluative. Chapter One outlines the centrality of the imagination to a proper understanding of Lewis's works. Chapter Two examines Lewis's own theory of imagination and surveys how he practised it as a literary critic. We compare and contrast Lewis's theory and practice of imagination with that of his friend, the theologian, Austin Faffer. Chapter Three looks in more detail at Lewis's imaginative practice, in particular his fascination with the images supplied by the seven planets of the Ptolemaic cosmos, which he termed 'spiritual symbols of permanent value'. We analyse what he meant by 'sprit' and 'symbol'. Chapter Four introduces the main argument of the dissertation namely that these seven spiritual symbols structure the works for which Lewis is best known, the seven 'Chronicles of Narnia'. We claim to have uncovered the governing imaginative blueprint of the septet. We address Lewis's capacity for and interest in secrecy and consider why this planetary theme has remained hitherto undetected. In Chapters Five to Eleven we take the seven planets in turn and trace the use Lewis made of them through out his writings. We analyse the planetary symbolism undergirding each Chronicle and conclude each chapter with an exegesis of the Christological message of each book so understood. Chapter Twelve examines factors which motivated Lewis to focus his imaginative energies upon Ptolemaic cosmology and suggests one particular occasioning factor behind the composition of the Chronicles. In addition, we consider theological and pedagogical reasons why he kept silent about the planetary theme. We conclude by indicating certain consequences that our argument has for future readings of these seven works.

Dans cette thèse, nous abordons le problème de l’écriture d’un monde comme tissage métaphorique en nous intéressant aux œuvres de trois auteurs de Fantasy anglo-saxonne : J. R. R. Tolkien (The llord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillon), C. S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) et J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter). Notre analyse porte sur la manière dont les auteurs tissent le monde de la subcréation, empruntant à la mythologie des éléments qu’ils réinsèrent à leur propre mythologie, fils mythologiques dont l’entrelacement donne du poids à l’univers de la Fantasy. Le processus de création, de construction d’un monde apparaît comme une activité complexe qui ne se limite pas à l’aspect narratif d’une histoire, mais repose sur divers paramètres, la superposition de multiples « couches de tissu » qui a une incidence sur la solidité de l’ouvrage finalisé. Dans notre travail, nous évoquons trois aspects de ce tissage « à plusieurs échelles » : la toile sur fond mythologique que les auteurs tissent pour apporter un cadre à la fiction, les motifs du mal ourdis sur toile de fond, puis les figures tisserandes, qu’elles soient représentées au sein du texte ou qu’elles se matérialisent sous la forme de l’auteur lui-même
In this thesis, we tackle the problem of the writing of a world as a metaphorical weaving, taking an interest in the works of three authors of anglo-saxon’s Fantasy. J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion), C. S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter). Our analysis deals with the way the authors weave the world of subcreation, borrowing from mythology elements that they reinsert into their own mythology, mythological threads whom intertwining gives weight to the universe of Fantasy. Since the publication of the book The Screwtape Letters in 1942, ‘C. S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. By paying close attention to the historical conditions of authorship, publication and reception, while highlighting similarities and contrasts between Britain and America, this dissertation provides a robust account of how and why Lewis became one of the most successful Christian authors of the twentieth century.

L’adaptation existe depuis les débuts du cinéma. Dès lors, le nombre de versions filmiques d’œuvres littéraires ne cesse de croître et l’adaptation reste au cœur de la production cinématographique partout dans. Toutefois nous constatons que l’adaptation se trouve dans une situation quelque peu paradoxale. Ce qui motive sa conception est également à l’origine de la majeure partie des critiques. D’une part, le bénéfice économique est évident. La notoriété d’un roman à succès garantit un public nombreux. D’autre part, le contexte créatif se révèle difficile car, du point de vue ontologique, l’adaptation préserve la comparaison traditionnelle en s’appuyant sur un paradigme oppositionnel des arts où le film se doit de se justifier face au texte source. Se situant à la croisée des arts, l’adaptation focalise un débat sur une hiérarchie notionnelle des arts où la narration à travers des images serait toujours perçue comme inférieure aux autres formes. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions ce phénomène dans le contexte de la résurgence de la fantasy lors des années 2000. Ce fait culturel du monde anglophone atteindra un niveau inattendu au cinéma avec le succès des adaptations des romans de J. R. R. Tolkien et de J. K. Rowling tandis que la réception des versions filmiques des œuvres de C. S. Lewis peut paraître mitigée. Adaptation has been a part of cinema since its very beginning. Since then, the number of film versions of literary works which appear on screen has never ceases to increase and adaptation is still at the heart of cinematic production around the world. Adaptation actually exists in a rather paradoxical situation. What motivates its conception is also the source of the majority of criticism against it. On one hand, the economic advantage is clear. The fame of a popular novel guarantees a large audience. On the other hand, its creative context can prove to be difficult since ontologically adaptation serves to preserve the traditional comparison based on an oppositional paradigm of the arts where the film has to justify itself in front of the source text. Standing at a crossroads between the arts, adaptation is the focus of a debate on a notional hierarchy within the arts where narration through images could still be perceived as inferior compared to other forms.We wanted to study this phenomenon within the context of the resurgence of fantasy witnessed in the 2000’s in this thesis. In the English-speaking world this cultural event reached an unexpected level with the success of the adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling’s novels while the film versions of C. S. Lewis’ works were less well received. With these points in mind, we consider the process and the product of adaptation in order to situate our corpus in the debate through a top down approach of comparison. We thus hope to bring some elements of reflections on the craze for these stories and the domain of adaptation studies

The Chronicles of Narnia, a landmark work of fantasy, written by C.S. Lewis, who was also an apologetic professor, is well-known to and popular with the readers. Looking back on the source of fantasy, we find that the western Christian thought did influence it a lot. The main motif of Christianity is to manifest the redemption from God. C.S. Lewis, employing the form and content of literature, loaded The Chronicles of Narnia with the thought of Christian redemption. Therefore, Christian thought is the best entry point to probe into the meaning and connotation of The Chronicles of Narnia. There are three major parts of this study. The first part focuses on the related history of The Chronicles of Narnia, including the background of book-making, the writer’s bibliography, the causes and effects of book-publishing, and the construction and completion of the work. In the second part, the researcher explains and interprets the implied Christian symbols and analogies of The Chronicles of Narnia compared with the Bible. Furthermore, the researcher connects every symbol and analogy to find the process of redemption hidden behind the work. In the third part, the researcher takes Wayne C. Booth’s views about the author in The Rhetoric of Fiction as the ground discourse to investigate the writer’s voice in The Chronicles of Narnia, then through analyzing the contemporary objects and the figure of the writer of the work to make further judgments on the writing techniques and strategies and the purpose which C.S. Lewis applied to The Chronicles of Narnia. Through the historical research of the work and the writer, along with the interpretations of the content with the concept of Christian redemption, and assisted by the analysis of the author’s writing techniques, the researcher makes an in-depth investigation about The Chronicles of Narnia. Moreover, this study also puts forth a new view to examine the Narnia created by C.S. Lewis and lets the readers be aware of the deep significance of Christian redemption.

During recent years, the fantasy literature based on the infusion of reality and illusion has become a trend in the book market, culture scene and media industry. Those in the genre of children and adolescent literature are especially popular and have become a upsurge. Hence, the research aim to study “The Chronicles of Narnia” written by C. S. Lewis and its creative process, and discuss its artistic characteristics and educational meaning by analyzing elements such as scene settings, characters, story theme…etc, from the perspectives of fantasy literature and aesthetic ideal of children’s in hope to find out its position and value in children’s literature. The first chapter is, via literature analysis, a summary of fantasy literature and discusses its meaning, characteristics, structure and creative elements. The second chapter is an analysis of the mutual impact and inter-dependency between “The Chronicles of Narnia” and children’s fantasy literature based on its background and the external/environmental scheme of children’s fantasy literature, carding out the threads of thought within children’s literature and introducing the life of C. S. Lewis and his creative cause and process of “The Chronicles of Narnia”. Chapter three through five is the main body of this research discussing the form of “The Chronicles of Narnia” from three different angles: form and meaning generated from temporal-spatial fantasy, the characteristics and image of magical characters and their creation, thematic content; in order to compare the theory with text and generate proof of compatibility. The sixth chapter analyzes the creative style and content of “The Chronicles of Narnia” from its writing skill, theme presentation, characteristics of children’s fantasy literature and children’s aesthetic ideal, discusses its educational value, and finally summarize with its meaning in our time and the criticism it has received in order to verify its outstanding value in the field of children’s literature.

Although a serious Christian apologist and academic writer, Clive Staples Lewis was also well known (and loved) for his fictional works. Lewis was of the opinion that one's faith and chosen profession cannot be separated and he thus aligned the two in his own writing (Schultz and West 1998: 120). Therefore, his writings reflect his Christian faith (after his conversion in 1931) and, although his Ransom (Cosmic) Trilogy (1938, 1943 and 1945), mythological work Till We Have Faces (1956) and The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) are not openly theological, they all deal with figurative representations of both Christ and the Biblical devil. Many studies have explored Lewis's portrayal of Biblical truths in his fictional writing. As Christopher Mitchell pointed out in his essay entitled "Bearing the Weight of Glory," a few months before his death, Lewis stated that he was writing in order to bring about an encounter between the reader and Christ (Mills 1998: 5). While on the surface these novels are not emphatically about the battle between heaven and hell, underlying the stories is a broader message of rivalry between good and evil. A student of Lewis's, Harry Blamires, remembers Lewis saying that he went about the task of writing The Chronicles of Narnia much as he did the writing of his serious theological work, Mere Christianity (Mills 1998: 15). Much research has thus been conducted to explore Lewis's portrayal of God in his fiction, yet there has been very little research on his metaphysical perspective on Satan. His fictional novels — most notably The Chronicles of Namia — are largely allegorical and often subtly allude to the devil through the characters. It is this subtle allusion to evil, and specifically characteristics of the Biblical Satan in The Chronicles, that I would like to explore in this dissertation.

EN : The presented paper addresses the film translation in the context of fantasy material based on the example of cult series of films “The Chronicles of Narnia”. The object of the work can be defined as the original films and translation of cult series of films “The Chronicles of Narnia”. The main aim of the paper is to identify linguistic and stylistic features of English-Russian and English-Ukrainian translation. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as: - elaboration of the translation theory and practice, including definitions and examples - studying the structure of represented video materials Three methods of translation in the cult series of films “The Chronicles of Narnia” are distinguished: calque, equivalence and antonymous translation. Among the grammatical transformations such types as outer partitioning and grammatical replacement are used. The lexical transformations such as transliteration and transcription are also present. Generalization is used in the context of lexicosemantic transformations. The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the translation of linguistic and stylistic features on the material of the cult series of films "The Chronicles Of Narnia". Methods of translation of both individual realities and the whole material are generally revealed.

“Time concept” was discussed from varied point of view since long time ago. This concept is formed basically due to the experience of daily life. Where do people live and how do people think influence the development of the time concept. Scholars from different era provide their ideas of time concept from different angles, including scientific, psychological, philosophical and surreal perspectives. In this thesis, I will point out that no matter how people perceive “time”, the experience of daily life is the most important part. Moreover, I will report that surreal perspective presents often in Fantasy and which comes from a cross-culture experience: dream, a collective experience. Images of Fantasy fertilize the limitation of time and space which lead the performances of time varied. The Chronicles of Narnia is the major text in this thesis. I start the argument from discussing the symbolic meaning of time phenomenon, and discover that beside the experience of adventure, salvation, maturity in Narnia, the profound meaning of Narnia is “other world” mirrors the reality, inner is bigger than outer, all righteousness go into eternality eventually. The role of Aslan is discussed as well. There are six Chapters in this thesis. Ch.1: Time and the experience of time. Ch.2: The meaning of time in Fantasy Literature. Ch.3: The reality and the fantasy world. Ch.4: Threshold of time. Ch.5: Salvation and maturity. Ch.6: Conclusion.

The present study aims to investigate the realization of Eugene Nida’s translation equivalence theory in Chinese translated versions of a classic literary work. To conduct the study, the researcher has chosen to study The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written by C. S. Lewis and published in 1950. The two versions of the book translated into Chinese were published in 1980 and 2005 respectively. By analyzing 90 examples extracted from the original text and translated texts, the researcher will be able to ascertain whether Nida’s translation equivalence theory has been employed in respect of meaning, style, and culture. To deliver a natural translation, meaning always has the priority during translation, with style coming second. However, there are exceptions in which style plays a more significant role, such as with works of poetry. The distinction between meaning and style will be illustrated in chapter four. Stylistic analyses may also be further divided into those of either a narrative or a dialogical nature. Considering that this book belongs to the genre of the novel, it is assumed that translation strategies are distinct for passages of either narration or dialogue. In addition to meaning and style, language reflects culture. The essence of a particular language is usually embedded in the culture out of which that language springs. To precisely capture the feelings evoked in a reader of the original text, the element of culture should be taken into consideration. The connotations of culture can never be explained in one or two words. Therefore, the researcher has set up three sections in cultural analyses, namely: special English usages, from idiom to non-idiom, and from non-idiom to idiom. The two translations in question were translated 25 years apart. This large time span raises a number of questions regarding translation strategies utilized in different eras. Any unique translation strategies that the two translators may or may have applied will be discussed thoroughly in chapter four.

This MA thesis is concerned with the comparison of two Czech translations of C. S. Lewis' novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The first part concentrates on the description of the author's and translators' life as well as the background of creating the novel and its translations. One part deals with the film adaptations of the book. Then there are described individual techniques and methods of translation and its analysis. The second part analyses the book in general. Names used in the book, titles of chapters, selected passages and special idioms are analyzed in detail. It deals with different approaches of each translator and examines the usage of words, sentence structures and their text style. The thesis tries to compare and analyze all three texts in order to come up with the sufficient justification or disprove of all used items. Abstract This thesis is an attempt to study the themes of individuation, redemption, and transcendence in C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia by means of C. G. Jung’s archetypal theory. Through exploring the recurrent fairytale elements in the seven books, the introduction of the thesis aims at making a connection between literary texts and critical approach. The first chapter focuses on the shadow part of human unconscious as well as the motif of forbidden knowledge, moral choice, and fortunate sin, and further explores the process of individuation in the human psyche. Together with the theme of individuation, the psychological meaning of redemption is discussed, too; in The Chronicles of Narnia, it is conspicuous that mental growth is the way to redemption. The focus of my second chapter is on the analysis of the anima (the feminine in man’s inner self), the anima reaction, and most vitally, the projection of the anima figure in one’s childhood—the role of mother in the tales. Beginning with the anima experience of Uncle Andrew in The Magician’s Nephew, this chapter explores the anima experience of Prince Rabadash, Prince Caspian, and Shasta and, through Andrew’s case, the persona involved in clothing and the witch figure. The third chapter centers on the externalization of the oppositional tendencies between good and evil in the human psyche and, through the principle of human nature in the pursuit of goodness, I analyze the effect Lewis produces by the destruction of the old Narnia and the eternal stay of Aslan’s followers in Aslan’s country, which forms a new Narnia as well. Locating Aslan a core figure in the seven Narnian books, Lewis empowers his tales with transcendence different from other fairy tales. The strong emotion of longing for and faith in Aslan makes the pursuit of goodness a terminal and eternal happy ending in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Abstract:
From the earliest works of the genre, fantasy fiction has had a complicated relationship with gender and feminism. C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia is seen by many as a prime example of fantasy's patriarchal roots, with its strong adherence to traditional gender roles and controversial treatment of the character Susan. In contrast, Philip Pullman's 'anti-Narnia' His Dark Materials is often cited as an instance of pro-feminist fantasy, due to its engaging heroine, compelling female villain, and large cast of secondary female characters. When situated within the workings of the wider fantasy genre, however, the two series' seemingly oppositional stances on women, femininity, and gender roles are called into question. Using close textual analysis, this thesis examines the contrasts and continuities in the portrayal of female characters between Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia and Pullman’s His Dark Materials, in order to demonstrate how authors can unwittingly repeat patriarchal and misogynistic themes and narratives, even when their aim is to refute them.

This study aims to analyze and compare the Chinese translation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The versions of translation were Nàníyǎ Chuánqí Límíngxíngzhěhào (納尼亞傳奇:黎明行者號) published in 2005 by the Datian (大田) Culture Press and translated by Jinghua Lin (林靜華) from Taiwan; Límíng Tàlànghào (黎明踏浪号) published in 2005 by Yilin (譯林) Press and translated by Liangting Chen (陳良廷) and Wenlan Liu (劉文瀾) from mainland China. This thesis focuses on children’s literature translation and thus children readers. The researcher assumes that the readers of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader are mainly children. Children’s decoding ability is far behind that of adults; as a result, translators have to make adjustments for different audiences. Using translated versions as examples, the researcher sorted samples from the source text and target text by meaning, style, and culture. She used them as the foundation to examine if the translation achieves functional equivalence theory. A proper translation depends on the decoding ability of translators to help reach different readers. Deciphering ability plays an important role in reading. Children’s decoding abilities fall behind those of adults. Children of different ages have different needs in reading. The researcher evaluates if the translated text is suitable for younger readers and makes suggestions accordingly.

The thesis is focused on finding the philosophical dimension of a story, with respect to stories for children. It is also concerned with the variable possibilities how to use stories in the Philosophy for Children dialogue. Using the knowledge of literally science and using the articles about the role of story in Philosophy for Children, the thesis elaborates the definition of the philosophical dimension of story. Its further attempt is to suggest general method how to seize the philosophical dimension of every possible story for the purpose of philosophical dialogue with children. The suggested method is applied on the stories The Little prince by A. Saint-Exupery and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis in the last part of the thesis.

Abstract:
The focus of fighting tyranny and the justifications of the consecutive wars in fantasy literature for children and young adults play a noteworthy role in the intertwinement of literature and its educational potential. This genre is filled with numerous images of violence, in particular different scenarios of war and its justifications. In the books war constitutes the final battle between good and evil, and thus manifests the protagonists’ ultimate moral decisions between these two forces. The following books constitute the corpus: C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-56), Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising Sequence (1965-77), Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials (1995-2000), J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997-2007), Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle (2002-11), Amanda Hemingway’s Sangreal Trilogy (2005-07), and P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast’s House of Night novels (2007-2014). Although not all the books feature wars, all display justifications for war and the imperative to fight tyranny. Located within an intersection of diverse critical theories, my thesis engages literary texts in order to reflect on their capacity to negotiate, challenge, subvert, and perpetuate values and power structures. Motif analysis forms the centre of this analysis. I deploy a varied approach to literary analysis, relying upon literary and cultural theories (especially theories of ideology) to understand the realizations of the different motifs. Through issues of character construction, (political) authority, religion, and the construction of difference, the reader learns much about the culture and values of the respective world. Furthermore, this analysis invites the reader to find parallels between the fabricated world and the real world, and thus transfer what s/he has learned from the texts his/her own world. Engaging in such a reading ensures the drawing of direct connections between the reality constructed in the books on the one hand, and politics, the construction of difference, religion, and just war theory in the reader’s world on the other. The content analysis leads to broader cultural messages, which comprise assumptions about gender, power, ethnicity, religion, and morality. This methodology emphasizes the relevance as well as the complexity of the books and their educative potential, and facilitates the analysis of the books as tools for the defence and perpetuation of Western values and culture.

Trees, as threshold beings, effectively blur the line between the real world and fantastical alternate worlds, and destabilise traditional binary classification systems that distinguish humanity, and Culture, from Nature. Though the presence of trees is often peripheral to the main narrative action, their representation is necessary within the fantasy trope. Their consistent inclusion within fantasy texts of the twentieth century demonstrates an enduring arboreal legacy that cannot be disregarded in its contemporary relevance, whether they are represented individually or in collective forests. The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct a study of various prominent fantasy texts of the twentieth century, including the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Robert Holdstock, Diana Wynne Jones, Natalie Babbitt, and J.K. Rowling. In scrutinising these texts, and drawing on insights offered by liminal, ecocritical, ecofeminist, mythological and psychological theorists, I identify the primary function of trees within fantasy narratives as liminal: what Victor Turner identifies as a ‘betwixt and between’ state (1991:95) where binaries are suspended in favour of embracing potentiality. This liminality is constituted by three central dimensions: the ecological, the mythological, and the psychological. Each dimension informs the relationship between the arboreal as grounded in reality, and represented in fantasy. Trees, as literary and cinematic arboreal totems are positioned within fantasy narratives in such a way as to emphasise an underlying call to bio-conservatorship, to enable a connection to a larger scope of cultural expectation, and to act as a means through which human self-awareness is developed.
