Examines the politics of racialization in Cuba from the period after full emancipation to the restrictive immigration policy of the 1930s, through an analysis of the record-keeping practices of the Cuban Catholic Church. The study uses baptismal and marital records to record information on the intimate, racialized, and gendered domains of Cuban social life. The collections of Moscow museums contain only one complete dish, along with a fragment of a second, from the former interior decoration elements of the Holy Trinity Church in Khoroshevo. The facade of this church built in the last quarter of the 16th century once featured no less than 27 such dishes, which were made in the town of Iznik, today in modern Turkey. Similar decoration of church facades with such dishes was common during the period of the 10th to 14th 15th centuries in coastal areas of the European Mediterranean from Spain to Greece.
