Abstract:
A new type of stepped seal with a ribbed casing is proposed to efficiently reduce the leakage at the tips of turbine blades. The leakage characteristics of two different types of labyrinth seals (conventional seal vs. ribbed seal) were compared and analyzed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a wide operating range of pressure ratios and clearances. The analysis showed that the ribbed seal has superior leakage performance to the conventional seal at all clearance sizes. With the same clearance size (S/H = 1.0), the flow function of the ribbed seal was approximately 21.5–42.6% less th

Honeycomb damper seals with convergent-tapered clearance have been proposed to improve static and dynamic characteristics of liquid annular seals employed in pumps. Their characteristics are experimentally investigated and compared to those for a conventional straight (no taper) annular seal with smooth surface and a straight damper seal with identical honeycomb pattern in seal stator. Three convergent-tapered honeycomb damper seals are used in the test, and have different inlet clearance (maximum clearance) and almost the same outlet clearance (minimum clearance). A new experimental friction factor model for a honeycomb surface was developed using a static seal tester. Three clearances and three lengths were tested for the seals, and Reynolds number ranged from 3000 to 49,000. It was found that the friction factor was a function of Reynolds number and seal clearance only. The clearance effect was dominant and the friction factor was found to increase with increased clearance. Helium buffered floating-ring seals used in cryogenic turbopumps are sujbect to large temperature variations, shaft centrifugal growth, and dynamic shaft excursions. To prevent dangerous contact friction over a wide range of operating conditions generally requires liberal clearances with consequent high leakage. Abstract Brush seals are used in turbomachinery for reduced leakage as compared to conventional seals such as labyrinth seals. Early applications tended to favor having a line-to-line to a slight interference fit of the bristles to the shaft, but more recent applications have favored the use of a slight initial clearance fit for the purpose of reducing bristle wear. In these brush seals with clearance, the phenomenon of bristle blow-down largely negates the leakage degradation due to clearance, with bristles bending to reduce the clearance gap. Abstract:
Labyrinth seals represent an important flow element in the secondary air system of aero engines. The influence of seal clearance and teeth parameters on the leakage characteristic of a real size stepped labyrinth seal was experimentally and numerically analyzed in a stationary state. Two kinds of labyrinth seals were studied in this investigation that are generally used in gas turbines, namely downward stepped labyrinth and upward stepped labyrinth. The differences of seal flow leakage mechanisms between the two types of the labyrinth were investigated. In order to eliminate the scaling effect

Numerical investigations of leakage flow fields of two kinds of brush seals with four sealing clearances were conducted in this paper. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and non-Darcian porous medium model solutions were applied as the numerical approach to analyze the flow characteristics of brush seal. The reliability and accuracy of the RANS and non-Darcian porous medium model for leakage flow in brush seals were established by comparison with the experimental data. The referenced labyrinth seal was changed into a multi-stage brush seal which has two configurations. One configuratio

There is a growing demand for compressed air in the industry for various applications. Majority of industrial requirements is in line with screw compressor operating range. Design and construction of screw compressors are demanding tasks that require advanced calculations and theoretical knowledge. Clearances play a major role in the performance and reliability aspects of a screw compressor. Seals are provided in compressors to fit around rotor shafts in order to prevent the leakage of lubricating oil and working medium. However there is a small clearance between the seal and rotor shaft, whic

Effective sealing in turbomachinery reduces the leakage flow bypassing the turbine blades and also reduces the losses where the leakage flow mixes with the primary flow. In general the clearance should be as small as possible but is limited by thermal and mechanical effects which vary with load. In recent years intermittent energy sources, particularly wind and solar, have appeared in greater numbers on the power network. As a consequence conventional power plants need to become more flexible to accommodate renewable energy generation. A sealing technology which can accommodate rapid changes i

Labyrinth seals are widely used in industrial multistage centrifugal compressors to reduce internal leakage and maintain compressor performance for a prolonged operation time. The leakage flow across the shroud seal of covered impellers and the hub seal of the rotating shaft has an important effect on the compressor performance. The amount of leakage flow is primarily a function of seal running clearances, which is typically designed based on the compressor working environment, such as pressure and temperature conditions. This project is a continuation of research to enhance dry gas seal (DGS) reliability. Previous work reviewed failures from literature and experience of manufacturers and end-users and identified that liquid contamination was the most common cause, but it was concluded there was insufficient quantitative data to base recommendations on for further DGS reliability enhancements. Therefore, experimental and analytical investigations were pursued to fill the void. The ultimate objective was to be able to predict DGS failures due to liquid contamination, which could lead to greater DGS reliability t

Discusses limitations on abradable seals with tighter clearances and the effect of compressor surge on both types of seals.
