This paper looks into the relation between alive voice and writing in ancient letters. The focus of the research is not concentrated on the content of messages but in its dictate conditions, reading aloud, opening and closing formulas. This paper covers a wide historical period; this can be explained because ancient letters were largely conservative. Between the voice and writing, letters were a sign of the persistence of rhetoric, memory and progressive acceptance of the visual message as a predominant mean of communication.

Abstract Long distance water diversion projects transfer clean water to cities for industrial, agricultural and domestic use; there is a great risk of sudden water pollution accidents. Without a fast and optimal decision for emergency control in response to sudden water pollution accidents, dispatchers or decision-makers will not be prepared to respond to the accidents during the process of an emergency spill. To address this gap, a framework for fast and optimal decision support in emergency control is reported in this paper. The proposed fast and optimal decision system covers four stages. I

Abstract This paper aims to analyse the configuration of factors contributing to research uptake in education, with a particular focus on the Romanian context. One subsequent objective is to identify mechanisms for developing better synergies, not only between educational practice and research but also between these and educational policy. In doing so, the paper argues for shared responsibility among higher education institutions and policymakers for improving the educational system. The paper relies on results from a survey administered to a selected sample of civil servants in the Romanian central administration involved in the planning, evaluation and implementation of public policies in the field of education. Our results address the mechanisms of research uptake and utilisation by the central administration (communication and dissemination strategies, clarity, access and availability of research data, policymakers’ preferences for certain research topics) and the perceived relationship between researchers and policymakers (for example, the strength and nature of the relationship, or policymakers’ general involvement in research studies). The findings of our study pave the way for an in-depth analysis of organizational factors likely to affect research utilisation: research culture and engagement with researchers; the political and managerial context likely to promote research transfer; and the financial context needed to foster quality results.

AbstractSolidity is the dominant programming language for Ethereum smart contracts. This paper presents a high-level formalization of the Solidity language with a focus on the memory model. The presented formalization covers all features of the language related to managing state and memory. In addition, the formalization we provide is effective: all but few features can be encoded in the quantifier-free fragment of standard SMT theories. This enables precise and efficient reasoning about the state of smart contracts written in Solidity. The formalization is implemented in the SOLC-VERIFY verifier and we provide an extensive set of tests that covers the breadth of the required semantics. We also provide an evaluation on the test set that validates the semantics and shows the novelty of the approach compared to other Solidity-level contract analysis tools.

AbstractThe usage of models within model-driven software development aims at facilitating complexity management of the system under development and closing the gap between the problem and the solution domain. Utilizing model-driven software development (MDD) tools for agile development can also increase the complexity within a project. The huge number of different artifacts and relations, their different kinds, and the high degree of automation hinder the understanding, maintenance, and evolution within MDD projects. A systematic approach to understand and manage MDD projects with a focus on its artifacts and corresponding relations is necessary to handle the complexity. The artifact-based analysis presented in this paper is such an approach. This paper gives an overview of different contributions of the artifact-based analysis but focuses on a specific kind of analysis: architecture consistency checking of model-driven development projects. By applying this kind of analyses, differences between the desired architecture and the actual architecture of the project at a specific point in time can be revealed.

With a bit of exaggeration, it could be claimed that Lipovetsky’s lifetime work has focused on (contemporary or post-modern) culture. Surprisingly, Lipovetsky has never defined the concept of culture. It is, thus, necessary to reconstruct it from his work. The presented paper analyses the concept of culture on the background of Lipovetsky’s account of fashion. This account is very broad. Lipovetsky emphasises that fashion covers a large area extending from clothing, social intercourse and religion all the way to an account (and self-constitution) of man. In this regard, Lipovetsky puts special emphasis on the development of individualism in modern society. He also points out inconsistencies in the understanding and the manifestations of individualism.

The article covers a topic of an unconditional automatic recognition of foreign judgments within the European Union. Thus far, a different method in case of foreign judgments has been used. Certain regulations of the EU require exequatur and contain grounds for refusal of recognition and in certain regulations both the exequatur and grounds for refusal of recognition have been abolished. First, the paper deals with the principle of mutual trust (what mutual trust is and in what to trust). Subsequently, the article points out the differences between the principle of mutual trust and the principle of mutual recognition. Finally, it discusses the notion of automatic recognition in the context of free movement of judgments within the EU.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper analyzes and contrasts the constraints, stakeholders, and framing goals that must be considered when Energy Master Planning (EMP) is conducted for communities in seven countries. The analysis is based on findings from seven countries participating in the International Energy Agency’s “Energy in Buildings and Communities Program Annex 73”. The analysis covers design constraints such as emissions, sustainability criteria, and resilience goals, regulations and directives, regional and local limitations, such as available energy types, local conditions, and various levels of stakeholders, as well as community objectives. An analysis of the various constraints on different planning levels was done, and the key stakeholders were identified. They can be characterized by different governance structures and thereby stakeholder constellations. Mapping of the stakeholders involved provides insights in further constraints resulting into issues within the EMP that will need to be addressed for multi-owner, multi-stakeholder neighborhoods and districts. With a closer look at a case study in Elverum, Norway, the paper identifies constraints related to stakeholders involved and their impact on applying EMP.

AbstractThis paper aims to improve users’ experience in affective interactive installations through the diversification of interfaces. With logically organized hierarchical experience, diverse interfaces with emotion data as inputs enhance users’ emotional interaction to be more natural and immersive. By using facial affect detection technology, an installation with diverse input interfaces was tested with an organic formal setting. Mechanical flowers and support structure based on the organic form were deployed as its physical output for a multitude of sensorial dimensions. With actions of the mechanical flowers, such as blooming, closing, rotating, glowing and blinking, a layered experiential sequence was created and the atmosphere of the installation was evaluated to be more engaging. In this way, the layered complexity of information was transferred to users’ immersive emotional experience. We believe that the practices in this work can contribute to deeper emotional engagement with users and add new layers of emotional interactivity.

Abstract:
AbstractHyperproperties are properties of computational systems that require more than one trace to evaluate, e.g., many information-flow security and concurrency requirements. Where a trace property defines a set of traces, a hyperproperty defines a set of sets of traces. The temporal logics HyperLTL and HyperCTL* have been proposed to express hyperproperties. However, their semantics are synchronous in the sense that all traces proceed at the same speed and are evaluated at the same position. This precludes the use of these logics to analyze systems whose traces can proceed at different speeds and allow that different traces take stuttering steps independently. To solve this problem in this paper, we propose an asynchronous variant of HyperLTL. On the negative side, we show that the model-checking problem for this variant is undecidable. On the positive side, we identify a decidable fragment which covers a rich set of formulas with practical applications. We also propose two model-checking algorithms that reduce our problem to the HyperLTL model-checking problem in the synchronous semantics.

Bending moments acting on the pipe bends result from the surrounding environment, such as thermal expansions, soil deformations, and external loads. This consequently changes the pipe bend’s flexibility leading to higher stresses compared to straight pipes. Past studies considered the case of a closing in-plane bending moment on 90-degree

A great deal of energy can be sourced both directly and indirectly from waste. For example, municipal waste with an energy content of around 60 petajoules is incinerated in Switzerland every year. The energy recovered directly from this waste covers around 4 % of the Swiss energy demand. In order to optimise the contribution to the energy turnaround made by waste management, a
