Abstract:
This article presents a rudimentary model of collaboration with the aim to understand the conditions under which groups of scientists will endogenously form optimal collaborative groups. By analyzing the model with computer simulations, I uncover three lessons for collaborative groups. First, in reducing the cost borne by scientists from collaborating, one benefits the members of the group. Second, increasing the number of potential collaborative partners benefits all those involved in a collaborative group. Finally and counter intuitively, this model suggests that groups do better when scient

Abstract The use of formal modelling and computational simulation in studies of the Roman economy has become more common over the last decade. But detailed critical evaluations of this innovative approach are still missing and much needed. What kinds of insights about the Roman economy can it lead to that could not have been obtained through more established approaches, and how do simulation methods constructively enhance research processes in Roman Studies? This edited volume addresses this need through critical discussion and convincing examples. It presents the Roman economy as a highly com

In the 21st century, the rapid advance of technology and the existential threat of climate breakdown mean the real world increasingly resembles something out of fiction, filled with ambiguity and uncertainty. Such challenges need imaginative, creative solutions. To find them, teams of experts must pool their knowledge, make new connections, and forge paths forward. InStory Thinking, award-winning authors Helen Marshall, Kim Wilkins, and Lisa Bennett show how the principles of science fiction and fantasy writing – which speculate about and imagine different futures, people, and worlds - can enr

This article describes a new circuit device, developed in collaboration with scientists at Sandia National Laboratories, based on treed Gaussian processes (TGP). The circuit devices under study are bipolar junction transistors, which are used to amplify electrical current. To aid with the design of the device, a computer model predicts its peak output as a function of the input dosage and a number of design parameters. The methodology also involves a novel sequential design procedure to generate data to fit the emulator. Both physical and computer simulation experiments are performed, and the

Using a selection of archaeological cases studies from the Roman period in the Mediterranean region, Pedro Trapero Fernández shows how GIS technologies can be employed in the creation of spatial models to reproduce historical realities. An increasing number of researchers use this digital humanities tool as a means to model both territory and landscape. This book compiles different spatial models under a unified methodology described in separated chapters, such as mobility and visibility models, and discusses their limitations and potential for implementation in archaeological contexts.
