Abstract:
Yew wood holds a special position within the softwoods with regard to its exceptional elasto-mechanical behaviour. Despite a relatively high density, it is highly elastic in the longitudinal direction (the modulus of elasticity is low and the stretch to break high). In the radial-tangential plane, its elastic anisotropy is clearly less pronounced compared to other softwoods such as spruce. Knowledge of the anatomical organisation of yew wood is an indispensable precondition for the correct interpretation of this conspicuous mechanical behaviour. The aim of this study, therefore, was to interpr

Abstract:
In recent years, the European Union has been facing a number of challenges that it is finding it increasingly difficult to overcome. Most EU member states are facing a crisis of confidence in Europe and its institutions, and at the same time nationalist political parties and ideas are developing more and more, leading to a weakening of European solidarity. Eastern European countries weakened awareness of the collective interest. The common values that existed until then have become “diluted”, because different understandings of the nature of the state have emerged, as well as different views o

Abstract:
Integrated landscape management for sustainable livelihoods and positive environmental outcomes has been desired by many developing countries, especially for mountainous areas where agricultural activities, if not well managed, will likely degrade vulnerable landscapes. This research was an attempt to characterize the landscape in Chieng Yen Commune, Son La Province in Northwest Viet Nam to generate knowledge and understanding of local conditions and to propose a workable governance mechanism to sustainably manage the landscape. Zhao, Hao, Chunhao Liu, Yanlong Li, and Xiaoyi Li. Prognostic factors for survival in differentiated thyroid cancer with pulmonary metastases: a protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.2.0026.

Abstract:
Pulmonary metastasis (PM) is the most common form of distance metastasis in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), which has a poor prognosis. However, the prognostic risk factors are not yet well identified and analyzed. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to fill this blank though identifying and discussing survival prognostic risk factors systematically for DTC patients with PM. Pulmonary metastasis (PM) is the most common form of distance metastasis in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), which has a poor prognosis. However, the prognostic risk factors are not yet well identified a

Huang, Ying-Syuan (Elaine), Philip Vaughter, and Jonghwi Park. Bridging the Governance Gap: Protecting the Education Rights of Climate Displaced Persons in South and Southeast Asia. United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.53326/nkag9285.

Abstract:
South Asia is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, with millions of displacements recorded every year. Yet issues of climate-induced displacement and migration remain underrepresented in policy discourse, advocacy, and research. As a result, students in disaster-prone areas are often kept out of school during and after disasters. This policy brief highlights the common governance gaps in protecting the right to education for displaced persons in South and Southeast Asia, and provides policy recommendations for addressing them.

Guy, Charles, Gozal Ben-Hayyim, Gloria Moore, Doron Holland, and Yuval Eshdat. Common Mechanisms of Response to the Stresses of High Salinity and Low Temperature and Genetic Mapping of Stress Tolerance Loci in Citrus. United States Department of Agriculture, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1995.7613013.bard.

Abstract:
The objectives that were outlined in our original proposal have largely been achieved or will be so by the end of the project in February 1995 with one exception; that of mapping cold tolerance loci based on the segregation of tolerance in the BC1 progeny population. Briefly, our goals were to 1) construct a densely populated linkage map of the citrus genome: 2) map loci important in cold and/or salt stress tolerance; and 3) characterize the expression of genes responsive to cold land salt stress. As can be seen by the preceding listing of accomplishments, our original objectives A and B have

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence systems are rapidly being deployed in all sectors of the economy, yet significant research has demonstrated that these systems can be vulnerable to a wide array of attacks. How different are these problems from more common cybersecurity vulnerabilities? What legal ambiguities do they create, and how can organizations ameliorate them? This report, produced in collaboration with the Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance at the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, presents the recommendations of a July 2022 workshop of experts to help answer these questions.

Caldés, Natalia, John A. Maluccio, and David Coady. The Cost of Poverty Alleviation Transfer Programs: A Comparative Analysis of Three Programs in Latin America. Inter-American Development Bank, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008719.

Abstract:
A common criticism of antipoverty programs is that the high share of administrative (nontransfer) costs substantially reduces their effectiveness. Yet there is surprisingly little rigorous empirical evidence on program costs. This study proposes and implements a replicable methodology for a comparative cost analysis of three similar poverty alleviation programs in Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua, and assesses their cost efficiency. The findings underscore that any credible assessment of cost-efficiency requires a detailed analysis of program cost structures that goes well beyond simply providin

Abstract:
Not opening scientific data is costly. It has been estimated that a significant share of scientific knowledge disappears every year. In a 2014 study less than half of biological datasets from the 1990s have been recovered and when possible the recovery has necessitated significant time and efforts. In comparison, 98% of datasets published on PLOS with unique identifiers (data DOIs) are still available for future research. Open scientific data are fundamental resources for a large variety of scientific activities: meta-analysis, replication of research results or accessibility to primary source

Abstract:
Do not attempt resuscitation (DNAR) decisions pose a conundrum where patients are scheduled to undergo anaesthesia, because techniques routinely undertaken in the course of anaesthesia would ordinarily be classified as resuscitation. Yet it’s increasingly common for patients to be scheduled for anaesthesia and surgery with a pre-existing DNAR decision in place. These guidelines (which apply only to adult patients) are intended for use by all clinicians and healthcare workers involved with adult patients during the perioperative period. Abstract:
Structural modelling, that is the use of behavioural models to add a framework to the decision problem of an agent, is a useful yet underused tool in evaluation. This paper provides a general introduction to structural modelling, as well as an overview of other commonly used evaluation techniques in Economics and other social sciences. It then goes on to show with three key case studies, how structural models can be used to enrich the findings from randomised control trials. The case studies cover a wide range of policy questions: examining demand for health products in Kenya, incentivising te
