The authors examine how co-opetition—simultaneous cooperation and competition—affects firms'competitive behavior, proposing that differential structural positions among firms in a coopetitive network reflect resource asymmetries among them and that such asymmetries lead to differences in the volume and diversity of competitive actions undertaken by those firms. Data on cooperative network structure and competitive actions from the steel industry suggest that the firm's centrality is positively related to its volume of competitive actions and that its structural autonomy is positively related t

Plant–plant interactions change in response to environmental conditions, and riparian species are commonly influenced by flooding. This study tested whether flooding affects the intraspecific and interspecific competition of two riparian species and whether such effects depend on the topographic positions where plants have established. Seeds of the riparian species Polygonum hydropiper were collected from both low and high positions within the shoreline of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Groups of P. hydropiper seedlings from each position were either grown alone (i.e., without competition), with

Abstract Each member of a group chooses a position and has preferences regarding his chosen position. The group’s harmony depends on the profile of chosen positions meeting a specific condition. We analyse a solution concept (Richter and Rubinstein, 2020) based on a permissible set of individual positions, which plays a role analogous to that of prices in competitive equilibrium. Given the permissible set, members choose their most preferred position. The set is tightened if the chosen positions are inharmonious and relaxed if the restrictions are unnecessary. We show that the asymmetry generated by different national party positions reduces or even entirely removes the competitive pressure to nominate moderate candidates. The model has important implications for our understanding of policy divergence and, in particular, of the effects of gerrymandering.
