Evaluating higher education degree programs is an arduous task. This paper suggests innovative strategies for addressing four types of challenges that commonly occur during program evaluation: identifying theoretical models for evaluation, balancing potentially conflicting standards, accommodating faculty differences, and aligning courses. Examples from an undergraduate social work program evaluation are presented to illustrate the strategies.

This paper utilized a three-stage dynamic game to analyze the conflicts of interest between stakeholders caused by firm heterogeneity. We show that the higher the degree of heterogeneity, the higher the sales delegation incentive given. The firm’s heterogeneity scale will cause industry profit, union utility, consumer surplus and manager bonus conflicts of interest. Furthermore, the intensity of conflict is lower between the industry and the union than between the industry and consumer and between the industry and manager if the degree of heterogeneity is relatively small.

Abstract:
Over a product lifecycle, many engineering tools are used to create computer-based models that need to interact. This poses interoperability problems because of the conflicting formats of the models and differing scopes of the tools. One proposed solution is an open standards-based product lifecycle management (PLM) framework. However, the use of open standards is hindered by the lack of knowledge regarding their actual and potential usage in current engineering processes. To overcome this hurdle and evaluate the opportunities and extent to which open standards can be used in such PLM framewor

Understanding electrical energy consumption in a robotic system leads to the ability to minimize energy consumption for a given task. This is particularly important for mobile robots and redundant manipulators where extended operating times and non-optimized movement patterns lead to increased operating costs. However, current research shows conflicting formulas for predicting energy consumption in robotic joints driven by DC motors, specifically when negative work is involved. A breakdown of energy consumption for DC motors is introduced with respect to different operating states and phases o

A close relationship has been shown between the spatial frequency of sine waves filling adjacent regions of 2-D figure/ground ambiguous pictures and the organization of those pictures into figure and ground (Wong and Weisstein, 1985; Klymenko and Weisstein, 1985). Areas filled with the relatively higher spatial frequency were predominantly perceived as figure in front of the lower spatial frequency filled ground areas. We report a similar spatial frequency effect on the organization of regions in depth that continued to dominate the perception even when conflicting disparity information was pr

Abstract Achieving minimum pressure loss and exit temperature pattern factors are the two important, but conflicting performance goals of a gas turbine combustor. In this study, Taguchi method was used to design CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis based experiments in order to arrive at optimized liner hole sizes (primary and dilution) of an annular gas turbine combustor. The CFD experiments were steady & three-dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based analyses performed on a 20-degree sector combustor model. Nine CFD analyses were performed as per the Taguchi L-9 or

Abstract:
This paper proposes fundamental concepts for goal-defined product designs, and practical methodologies for achieving optimal designs based these concepts. Also emphasized are the functions and significance of Pareto optimum solution sets in multi-objective optimizations during the execution of the proposed methodologies. Three main concepts for product design optimization are presented. First, the goal of the product design optimization is specified to obtain the best harmony of related (and often conflicting) characteristics, where Pareto optimum solution sets represent this harmony and more

A systematic methodology is applied leading to optimum selection of the suspension damping and stiffness parameters for two degree of freedom quarter-car models, subjected to road excitation. First, models involving passive damping with constant or dual rate characteristics are considered. Then, models where the damping coefficient of the suspension is selected so that the resulting system approximates the performance of an active suspension system with sky-hook damping are also examined. For all these models, appropriate methodologies are first employed for locating the motions of the vehicle

The public-private collaboration (PPC) for productive development policies (PDPs) implemented in Uruguay in recent years have provided fertile ground for research. Many have achieved results that can be analyzed within the scope of their respective histories and institutional settings. The study inquires about what PPCs maximize the benefits of PDP results and minimizes rent-seeking behavior or the capture of government. In other words, it wants to disentangle how did the PPCs selected balanced these two apparently conflicting goals. The results show that some PPCs managed these matters better

The distinction between vocational training and academic education can be traced back to different institutional structures in medieval Europe. However, owing to an increasing need for higher-level skills to respond to market demand, countries have resolved to establish flexible pathways for students on both tracks or systems to move or transfer across to each other. Permeability in education and training refers to the possibility for learners to transfer between different types of education and between different levels of qualifications.
