Abstract:
Abstract. This paper presents an extension of the process-dissociation procedure with wordstem completion, which makes possible the measurement of the stochastic relationship between consciously controlled and automatic processes. By means of an indirect wordstem completion test, the conditional probabilities of conscious remembering with and without automatic processes can be successfully determined. A multinomial model for the evaluation of this extended process-dissociation procedure is presented. This model makes the distinction between voluntary and involuntary conscious memory processes possible and has been applied to two experiments discussed in this paper. The results show that the assumption of stochastic independence is often violated, albeit not as strongly as predicted by the redundancy or exclusivity model variants. Two conscious processes were found, voluntary and involuntary conscious memory processes, each with a different probability of occurrence.

Abstract:
In Volume Three of Capital in a striking but somewhat uncharacteristic formula, Marx argues that the labor relation is the “hidden basis” of the entire social edifice including the state and politics. As an attempt to clarify and develop this insight I examine the dual nature of labor as abstract and concrete labor, arguing that the two sides of labor correspond not just to two sides of the commodity, but to different ethics and alienations of labor, and ultimately to different philosophical anthropologies.

Abstract:
An original approach to modelling internal structure of artificial cognitive agents and the phenomenon of language grounding is presented. The accepted model for the internal cognitive space reflects basic structural properties of human cognition and assumes the partition of cognitive phenomena into conscious and non-conscious. The language is treated as a set of semiotic symbols and is used in semantic communication. Semiotic symbols are related to the internal content of empirical knowledge bases in which they are grounded. This relation is given by the so-called epistemic satisfaction relations defining situations in which semiotic symbols are adequate (grounded) representations of embodied experience. The importance of non-conscio us embodied knowledge in language grounding and production is accepted. An example of application of the proposed approach to the analysis of grounding requirements is given for the case of logic equivalences extended with modal operators of possibility, belief and knowledge. Implementation issues are considered.

Abstract:
We investigated the criteria for the coupling of the left ventricle (LV) and the arterial system to maximize LV stroke work (SW) and the transformation of LV pressure-volume area (PVA) to SW. We studied eight conscious dogs that were instrumented to measure LV pressure and determine LV volume from three ultrasonically determined dimensions. The LV end-systolic pressure (PES)-volume (VES) relation was determined by caval occlusion. Its slope (EES) was compared with the arterial elastance (EA) and determined as PES per stroke volume. At rest, with intact reflexes, EES/EA was 0.96 +/- 0.20 EES/EA was varied over a wide range (0.18-2.59) by the infusion of graded doses of phenylephrine and nitroprusside before and during administration of dobutamine. Maximum LV SW, at constant inotropic state and end-diastolic volume (VED), occurred when EES/EA equaled 0.99 +/- 0.15. At constant VED and contractile state, SW was within 20% of its maximum value when EES/EA was between 0.56 and 2.29. The conversion of LV PVA to SW increased as EES/EA increased. The shape of the observed relations of the SW to EES/EA and SW/PVA to EES/EA was similar to that predicted by the theoretical consideration of LV PES-VES and arterial PES-stroke volume relations. We conclude that the LV and arterial system produce maximum SW at constant VED when EES and EA are equal; however, the relation of SW to EES/EA has a broad plateau. Only when EA greatly exceeds EES does the SW fall substantially. However, the conversion of PVA to SW increases as EES/EA increases. These observations support the utility of analyzing LV-arterial coupling in the pressure-volume plane.

This study examined the relation of personality traits—shame-proneness, guilt-proneness, and pride—on offending behavior. Using survey data from a sample of 224 college students, the construct and criterion-related validity of scales of the Shame Proneness Scale, the Test of Self-conscious Affect, and the Personality Feelings Questionnaire-2 were assessed. Regression analyses showed that self-conscious emotions are important in the etiology of criminal offending. Specifically, rated pride was positively correlated with self-reported criminal activity, whereas ratings of guilt were negatively associated with offending. The relation of shame with criminality varied depending on the type of measure used to indicate proneness to shame.

Abstract:
Background The extent to which isoflurane anesthesia alters systemic vascular regulation has received considerable attention. In contrast, the pulmonary vascular effects of isoflurane have not been elucidated. Our initial objective was to investigate the net effect of isoflurane on the baseline left pulmonary vascular pressure-flow (LPQ) relation compared with values measured in the conscious state. In addition, we assessed the extent to which isoflurane alters the pulmonary vascular responses to sympathetic alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor activation. Methods Twelve conditioned mongrel dogs were chronically instrumented to measure the LPQ relation. LPQ plots were generated by continuously measuring the pulmonary vascular pressure gradient (pulmonary arterial pressure--left atrial pressure) and left pulmonary blood flow during gradual (approximately 1 min) inflation of a hydraulic occluder implanted around the right main pulmonary artery. LPQ plots were generated at baseline in the conscious and isoflurane-anesthetized states (n = 12). The pulmonary vascular dose-response relation to the sympathetic alpha-adrenoreceptor agonist phenylephrine also was investigated in conscious and isoflurane-anesthetized dogs (n = 6). Finally, after preconstriction with the thromboxane analogue U46619, the dose-response relation to the sympathetic beta-adrenoreceptor agonist isoproterenol was assessed in the conscious and isoflurane-anesthetized states (n = 8). Results Compared with values measured in the conscious state, isoflurane anesthesia had no net effect on the baseline LPQ relation. The magnitude of the pulmonary vasoconstrictor response to phenylephrine observed in conscious dogs was not altered during isoflurane anesthesia. In contrast, the pulmonary vasodilator response to isoproterenol was markedly potentiated (P < 0.01) during isoflurane anesthesia compared with that in the conscious state. Conclusions These results indicate that isoflurane does not exert a net vasodilator influence on the pulmonary circulation at baseline. In contrast to the systemic circulation, the pulmonary vasoconstrictor response to sympathetic alpha-adrenoreceptor activation is maintained during isoflurane anesthesia. Surprisingly, the pulmonary vasodilator response to sympathetic beta-adrenoreceptor activation is actually potentiated during isoflurane. Thus, isoflurane anesthesia has differential effects on the canine pulmonary vascular responses to sympathetic alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor activation.

Abstract:
In two experiments, we investigated the effects of expertise and mode of thought on the accuracy of people's predictions. Both experts and nonexperts predicted the results of soccer matches after conscious thought, after unconscious thought, or immediately. In Experiment 1, experts who thought unconsciously outperformed participants in all other conditions. Whereas unconscious thinkers showed a correlation between expertise and accuracy of prediction, no such relation was observed for conscious thinkers or for immediate decision makers. In Experiment 2, this general pattern was replicated. In addition, experts who thought unconsciously were better at applying diagnostic information than experts who thought consciously or who decided immediately. The results are consistent with unconscious-thought theory.

Abstract:
Inspired by the eminently successful physical theories and informed by commonplace experiences such as seeing a cat upon looking at a cat, conscious experience is thought of as a measurement or photocopy of given stimulus. Conscious experience, unlike a photocopy, is symbolic—like language—in that the relation between conscious experience and physical stimulus is analogous to that of the word "cat" and its meaning, i.e., arbitrary and yet systematic. We present arguments against the photocopy model and arguments for a symbolic conception of conscious experience. Learning and the corresponding plasticity of the brain make a strong case for the symbolic conception of conscious experience, while many extra-ordinary conscious experiences argue against the formalisation of consciousness as a measuring device. The notions of place-value notation and grammar, which organise quantitative measurements and conscious experiences in the medium of numbers and language, respectively, are suggested as model systems for putting together a comprehensive theory of conscious experience.

Motan, Irem. "Recognition Of Self Conscious Emotions In Relation To Psychopathology." Phd thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12609222/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to discover nonverbal, bodily gesture and contextual cues indicating self-conscious emotions and use these clues to examine personal differences and psychopathological symptoms. Moreover, possible effects of cultural differences on self-conscious emotions&rsquo
recognition and their relation to psychopathology are meant to be discussed. To achieve aforementioned goals, the study is partitioned into three separate but interdependent phases. The aim of the study is scale adaptation for which the State Shame and Guilt Scale, Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3, Guilt- Shame Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory are applied to a group of 250 university students. The second study&rsquo
s objective is to determine the nonverbal expressions used in recognition of self-conscious emotions. To meet this goal, 5 TAT cards, whose compatibility with the research questions is verified, are applied to 45 university students in separate sessions by using close ended questions. In the third part of the study, 9 TAT cards, which include clues about recognition and nonverbal expressions of self-conscious emotions, adapted corresponding scales, and a psychopathological symptoms measuring scale (SCL-90) in self-report format are applied on a group of 250 university students. Factor and correlation analyses done in the first part reveal that adapted scales are reliable and valid, while group comparisons and measurements of the second part indicate differences in emotions. Findings reveal that shame can be recognized by nonverbal expressions whereas for guilt contextual clues are facilitated. In the third part, group comparisons and regression analyses, which are done in order to reveal self-conscious emotions&rsquo
recognition and their significant relationships with psychopathology, display that state self-conscious emotions and shame-proneness have very important roles on psychopathology. All these findings are discussed in the light of cultural effects.

Luke, David P. "The psychology and parapsychology of the belief in luck and its relation to the belief in PSI and PSI performance." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2007. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2844/.

Full text
Abstract:
Self-reports have described luck as an important factor in people’s lives, and there is a sizable body of psychological research conducted around the belief in luck, primarily as an intangible external element and a companion of gamblers. This thesis reviews the major part of this research, offering a critical analysis and identifying a region of research into luck that warrants further investigation. That is, if psychic events, collectively termed ‘psi’ are possible then such events may just appear to be lucky. Several parapsychological studies have investigated this relationship between luck and psi but have failed to discern if this relationship is real, perhaps because of the lack of explicit definition of luck or the measurement of what it is that the participants believe it to be. To address this issue existing luck belief measures were reviewed but it was clearly necessary to construct a new comprehensive measure based on thorough bottom-up test construction principles. A series of semi-structured interviews about luck were reanalysed qualitatively, the themes of which were used in the generation of items for a questionnaire. Through a series of factor-analyses a final 40-item, 4-factor Questionnaire of Beliefs about Luck (QBL) was produced, with factors labelled Luck, Chance, Providence and Fortune, to which was added a 1-item measure of Perceived Personal Luckiness (PPL). The new measure was found to be robust and internally reliable and correlated with paranormal belief supporting several predictions and thereby demonstrating sound construct validity. The literature on psi and luck indicated that luck might best be understood by Stanford’s (1974a) model of ‘psi-mediated instrumental response’ (PMIR) and a PMIR-type study was planned which incorporated the new QBL. A non-intentional precognition experiment with 100 participants utilised erotic-images as psi incentives and found good evidence of psi with this design. Furthermore, the QBL Luck subscale was found to be a significant predictor variable of psi score, indicating that the measure has good predictive validity, and PPL, belief in psi, and erotic reactivity also correlated with psi scores. There was also a near gender-effect. The findings were discussed in light of previous results and were interpreted in relation to the psychological theories outlined in the literature review, finding support for the notion of self-serving biases, and offering fresh insights into the illusion of control. A model was put forward for the relationship of luck and psi. It was concluded that the QBL was a comprehensive, reliable, valid and useful tool in the investigation of luck

Jutras, Patrick David. "Relating management development to the concept of consciousness: a preliminary study on the transcendental state of conscious awareness accessed through the resonant derivatives of a binaural beat system." Mémoire, Université de Sherbrooke, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/8228.

Abstract:
This research study evaluates, discusses, and relates the concept of consciousness, and mainly the concept of transcendental conscious awareness to management development and the attribution of the resultant unfolding of a postconceptual mode of mental functioning—intuition—to refinement and repetitious experiences of transcendental awareness. Using a systems and monistic theoretic approach of consciousness drawn from a comprehensive review of literature on the emerging holistic models in the brain-mind sciences, the transcendental state of conscious awareness—referred to as sahaj samadhi in Hinduism—is given epistemological and ontological primacy from both an objective and subjective perspective. Within this context "intuition"—referred to as a holistic or simultaneous mode of processing information without the mediation of the reflective intellect—is structured in consciousness and we suggest that the primary impetus behind management growth and development with regards to variables such as creativity, self-concept, and perceptual skills is seen to be teleological, namely the subjective experience of an integrative or synthetic state of the mental system and the nervous system—for there is an isomorphic correspondance between the two. It is proposed that the experience of "contentless", "pure" or transcendental consciousness is the natural outcome of letting the mind, and its corresponding unfolded content, enfold and proceed towards the integrative or upper limit of the thought at its original level. Psychophysiological studies conducted on subjects practicing meditational techniques support that view, and have revealed that those techniques induce experiences that are formally and structurally alike defined by electroencephalographic (EEG) indices. Mostly these practices or techniques are carried through the use of the resonant properties of sound syllables pronounced subvocally. The process refers to and uses the principles of resonant entrainment. The effect of entrainment through the resonant derivatives of a series of binaural beat stimuli developed by The Monroe Institute with respect to three EEG parameters—increased amplitude and synchrony of delta brain waves and alpha suppression—is measured on eleven volunteer subjects in relation with the process of transcending to support the hypothesis that Hemi-Sync binaural beat stimuli influence brain-wave patterns and consequently may transform mental states of consciousness by engendering elevated-amplitude delta EEG synchrony and suppression of resting-state-alpha.

Agathagelou, Amanda May. "Individual psychodynamic development : the Imago relationship approach in organisational context." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13371.

Full text
Abstract:
Imago relationship therapy was originally applied to couples counselling by Dr Hendrix (1992, 1993). This model was applied to a group of senior managers from the Lonmin Platinum Mine to create an understanding of intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics to reduce the conflict levels they experienced in the workplace. Imago theory is applicable to the workplace because of the influence of intrapersonal processes on interpersonal dynamics, which is the same influence that causes conflict in romantic relationships. Love relationships consist of three stages, namely romantic love, the power struggle stage, and the real love stage. In the organisational context, these stages are the initial excitement phase, the power struggle stage, and the conscious relating stage. The study aimed to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on the effects of the Imago theory programme presented to the group of managers. The study thus aimed to determine whether the managers experienced a shift in their consciousness after the programme had been presented. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine whether such a shift in consciousness would have an effect on the individuals’ overall emotional wellbeing and if it would increase their overall life satisfaction. Furthermore, the study investigates if the programme had a positive effect on their interpersonal relationships (particularly with their subordinates). Twenty-two senior managers and 22 subordinates participated in the study. Certain pre-tests were conducted, followed by the seven-module intervention. The same post-tests were conducted after the training had taken place. Quantitative and qualitative results were obtained. The quantitative results showed that the participants’ problem solving abilities improved and that they experienced marginally higher levels of life satisfaction. The reactivity levels experienced by the participants during conflict situations decreased, and their levels of marital satisfaction improved. The results also showed that the managers responded more positively to their subordinates after the intervention. Furthermore, the subordinates experienced their managers as being more flexible after the intervention. The qualitative results indicated that a shift in consciousness did take place as envisaged. The group understood both intrapersonal and interpersonal psychodynamics. They also willingly applied Imago concepts to improve their functioning in the organisational context.
Psychology
D. Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Opposing the culture of différance created through American cultural media, this thesis argues, Arab hip-hop artists revive the politically conscious sub-genre of hip-hop with the purpose of normalising their Arab existence. Appropriating hip-hop for a cultural protest, Arab artists create for themselves a sub-genre of conscious hip-hop – Arab-conscious hip-hop and function as Gramsci’s organic intellectuals, involved in better representation of Arabs in the mainstream. Critiquing power dynamics, Arab hip-hop artists are counter-hegemonic in challenging popular identity constructions of Arabs and revealing to audiences biases in media production and opportunities for progress towards social justice. Their identity (re)constructions maintain difference while avoiding Otherness. The intersection of Arab-consciousness through hip-hop and politics of identity necessitates a needed cultural protest, which in the case of Arabs has been severely limited. This thesis progresses by reviewing literature on politics of identity, Arabs in American cultural media, Gramsci’s organic intellectuals and conscious hip-hop. Employing criticism, this thesis presents an argument for Arab hip-hop group, The Arab Summit, as organic intellectuals involved in mainstream representation of the Arab community.

Abstract:
Environmental protection has been a very important issue for decades. The re-use of natural resources, the mass production of waste, the deterioration of the quality of the biosphere, human activity and action in conjunction with scientific and technological progress have led to an ever-increasing degradation of the quality of the environment. However, human activity in relation to environmental protection does not have to be only negative in nature but it is up to us and our best conscience to carry out positive and beneficial activities in relation to the environment and thus reduce negative impacts to the minimum. Today, there are many conscious individuals among us who are really aware and conscious about the sustainable concept.

Abstract:
The Preface reflects on Paul Farmer’s book as a bold and timely intervention on political working-class theatre. It places A39’s practice in the context of historical events and theatrical practice, but also in relation to a rich seam of academic enquiry on agitprop theatre, often assumed redundant beyond the end of the 1970s. It invites readers to consider the book as a provocative political analysis, and corrective to that understanding of history. It proposes the significance of returning to this territory at a time of increased class-conscious and materialist critiques from contemporary artists and theatre makers. This is especially in view of the political agency of A39’s approach; moments of which are highlighted here.

AbstractThe chapter begins by identifying the specificity of the Turkish context in terms of particular balances of historical and contemporary forces in relation to which Gülen and Hizmet have had to position themselves. It shows how out of this, Gülen emerged as a distinctive scholar, teacher, and innovator, becoming differentiated from the inheritance of Said Nursi, while also drawing upon it. It discusses Gülen’s particular understanding of interplay between Islamic sources; his conscious engagement of those sources with historical and contemporary places and times; and his understanding of revelation in dynamic terms. Out of this interplay, Weller provides a range of examples of Gülen’s role as taboo-breaker in teaching and action with regard to the kind of secular-political taboos; national-cultural identity taboos; and religious boundary taboos that have otherwise had a strong and constraining hold on Turkish society.

Abstract:
Abstract Books on memory tend to shy away from the discussion of consciousness and related issues. This is surprising on the one hand yet understandable on the other. It is surprising because the relation of consciousness to memory is of great importance in memory research (*amnesia, *declarative memory, *episodic memory), and conscious awareness is a major *criterion in the *zeitgeist *taxonomy of memory *systems. Avoiding the discussion of consciousness is, however, understandable, because despite many centuries of systematic thinking, and the fact that we all know subjectively what it is, consciousness is still an *enigma.

Abstract:
This chapter studies the academic agenda of professional Jewish historians who received their training before 1918, in the imperial context of Austria–Hungary, at the universities of Lwów, Kraków, and Vienna, and the social and political contexts in which they were active. It shows that Polish Jewish historiography emerged as a field of interest among the Polish intelligentsia and the enlightened Jewish elite throughout partitioned Polish lands in the early to mid-nineteenth century. This new cohort boasted professional university training and saw themselves as part of the guild. In the early works of Schorr, Schiper, and Bałaban in the first decade of the twentieth century, a more substantial and critical scholarship on the history of the Jews of Poland emerged. The chapter then argues that their understanding of Polish Jewish history was shaped by their immersion in Polish historical writing and by their responses to political developments in Galicia, such as the emergence of the Jewish national movement and the increasingly complex position of the Jewish community in the region in relation to the Polish and Ukrainian national narratives.

Abstract:
Notwithstanding its phenomenological appeal, physicalists have tended to shun the notion that we are ‘acquainted’ with our mental states in consciousness, due to the fact that the acquaintance relation seems mysterious, irreducible, and consequently unnatural. I propose a model of conscious experience based on the idea of ‘mental quotation’, and argue that this captures what we want from acquaintance but without any threat to naturalism. More generally the chapter embodies a complaint that reductionists seem unable to look past the representation relation to do the implementing of consciousness, and a call for theorists to investigate other relations to model our connection to our conscious states, like the constitution/part-whole relationship. This mundane relation has what it takes to give us natural acquaintance with our conscious-mental states.

Abstract In this chapter, the author will argue that the purely non-relational versions of the traditional approach have a problem specifying which of one’s various mental states is the state-conscious state. Since non-relational higher-order theories are traditional in the sense that they aim to give an account of state-consciousness, this puts the theory in some hot water. Mixed non-relational views, which aim to establish some sort of substantial targeting relation between first-order and higher-order states/contents (with identity being the strongest relation), may solve the problem of which state is the conscious state, but require implausible and ad hoc assumptions. The author will aim to turn these various differences into possible empirical predictions. In the next chapter we will turn to relational versions of the traditional higher-order thought accounts.

Abstract:
Currently, designers experience impasses and difficulties when seeking to reorient their design processes to more conscious ways of acting, which can collaborate to resolve the different crises that we are experiencing as a society. Many of these difficulties are due to the profound implication of this field in the paradigms and social and economic systems that determined and continue to determine the modes of existence of (post)modernity. The purpose of this essay is to present the origins of design and its socioeconomic context, and put it up for discussion under the lens of alternative paradigms, and other ways of acting in the face of the unsustainability of current development models. It seeks to provide contextualization regarding the emergence of industrial design in Europe under an ideology inspired by modernity and liberal and capitalist economy, and a critical position, which seeks in ecology the bases for a reform or reinvention of the notion of design and its role in society

Abstract:
Research on learning styles often focuses on the learning style of the student; however, the learning style of the educator may affect instructional choices and hinder learning. Few studies have addressed the lack of knowledge that exists in universities with respect to educators’ learning styles and a lesson framework (development, delivery, and debriefing). This sequential mixed methods study explored university educators’ conscious, reflective instructional choices as they related to learning styles application within a lesson. Two theoretical and one conceptual frameworks drew on Kolb’s experiential learning theory, Bloom’s, Reigeluth’s, and Gagné’s instructional design theories and models, and Fiddler’s and Marienau’s events model of learning from experience. Research questions addressed learning styles, usage patterns, instructional choices, and reflections of university educators within a lesson framework. An online inventory recorded 38 university educators’ instructional choices, learning styles, and learning styles patterns within the framework of a lesson. Interviews were conducted with 7 of the university educators to document their conscious reflections regarding their instructional choices. Results from the inventory identified that more than 56% of university educators applied the accommodation learning style during the stages of development and delivery of a lesson, and 34% applied the assimilation learning style during the debriefing stage, which were supported by detailed reflections about their instructional choices in relation to their learning styles. The knowledge acquired about learning styles applications during a lesson framework may benefit university educators’ teaching, which are foundational to affecting positive social change within academic and social communities.

Abstract:
The article considers the role of the universal system of conscious self-regulation as a meta-resource in the system of stages of formation of subjectivity (ontological model). The concepts of hierarchical levels of formation of self-regulation are considered: maintaining the level of human adaptation; level of difficulty; the degree of concreteness of achieving life goals (universal (meta-) and special regulatory resources). The stages of the formation of subjectivity are considered in the ontological continuum “subject of spontaneous activity — subject of arbitrary action”, this model is not tied to a specific activity, and is also universal. For the first time, a study was conducted of the relationship of self-regulation profiles with the structure of the stages of formation of subjectivity in relation to the achievement of the goal in systemforming activities (by the example of student learning actions). Using a correlation analysis, intersystemic relationships were established between indicators of conscious self-regulation (planning, modeling, programming, evaluation), regulatory qualities (flexibility, independence) and the general level of self-regulation with the severity of the stages of formation of subjectivity, their integrity and connectedness. The process of formation of subjective qualities is considered depending on the typology with the allocation of three profiles of the empirical structure of self-regulation for two samples (88 people in total). Samples of university students are compared in the direction of preparation (the first is engineering, the second is computer technology, the most involved in digitalization). For each of the samples, specific interrelation results were obtained. The results obtained are relevant in the scientific and applied terms for the development of individual educational routes.

Abstract:
Nowadays the possibility of being ubiquitous connected generates new patterns in the relation between people and the built environment. In a time when cities around the globe claim to be smart, it is crucial to be conscious and highlight the value of its inhabitant’s collective wisdom. Technology can improve efficiency in many aspects but cities cannot be understood without its people. We are reorganizing our lives around mass mobile communications. Given that the research scope needs to be updated. Some studies on the use of mobiles in urban spaces have been done, however they have rarely been used to describe this phenomena at a street level, understanding how users interact with public spaces (or not), while online. The research sought to investigate how the widespread use of smartphones frames people’s behavior and interaction with public spaces and create new forms of urban dynamics in the Smart Cities era. In this context, we compared the different social groups (tourists, temporary and permanent residents) that inhabit the city. Taking El Born area in the city of Barcelona as case study we have analyzed the use of public spaces and how mobile technology affects the way people relate to the city while online. Adopting traditional methods of field observation and combining them with surveys we have extended and improved existing methodologies, generating a singular comprehensive dataset, consisting of more than 5000 observations. The analysis of all collected data provided insightful outcomes both at street level and from the users’ point of view. The results evince that behavioral patterns on the use of technology in public spaces are tightly linked to the social group each person belongs to and to the relation each one has to a place. Although online information about places is getting progressively more accurate, there is still a valuable intangible layer of knowledge held by locals that can not be replaced by any map, recommendation system or app. Despite the infinite possibilities of being online, mediated perception do not replace the intangible value of face-to-face relations.

Abstract:
Selecting a business education brings increased intrapersonal and external pressures for students, adding to the challenge of balancing personal expectations with external pressures. When improving business education, it's crucial to consider evolving external factors, including increased uncertainty and societal pressures driven by technological advancements. The study aims to investigate the influence of external factors on the entrepreneurial intentions of business students, focusing on the impact of academic knowledge amid diverse external pressures.Using the EIQ questionnaire and statements, business students' attitudes about the influence of external pressure on entrepreneurial intentions were collected. A moderate negative correlation (r=-0.219; p < 0.05) indicates a visible negative relation between academic knowledge and random actions. There is a statistically significant positive relationship (r=0.441; p < 0.05) between family expectations and random actions concerning students' intentions. Random choices tend to decrease as academic knowledge increases. However, research findings indicate a tendency where academic knowledge does not necessarily support entrepreneurial behavior in business students, factors influencing students' entrepreneurial intentions often extend beyond the scope of acdemic knowlege. However, developing critical thinking skills, managing staff risk, albeit a gradual process, is a consistent and conscious investment by teaching staff.

Abstract:
The role of the school and the teacher in the third millennium implies a change of the traditional paradigm, of a magisterial-centric type, which assumes that the teacher-pupil and teacher-student relations to be official, with strictly defined roles and statutes. Thus it is necessary to rethink and redefine the educational systems, especially the learning process, as Ken Robinson states "As much as we love the school, we must accept that it is no longer the only or the main space of knowledge and learning, as it was centuries in a row, but only one of them."(2015) In this sense, an approach perspective that we propose for analysis is given by identifying the references and characteristics of student learning in the online environment or as the traditional form, in the students'classroom environment. Thus, the premise is the learning process, as an individual activity, which involves the student in developing and coordinating his own learning strategy. Even if students, colleagues in the same training program, aim to obtain the same qualifications and competencies, each has its own strategy / learning style, with significant individual differences. The main factors that the student can control, especially in the online learning are: the learning conditions; personal motivation; personality, the degree to which each student is organized, with adaptability and creativity dispositions, volitional qualities etc.; previous qualification and knowledge, the level of initial experience with which the student enters the program (a solid fundamental preparation, in the program field, facilitates the learning activities and makes it easier to acquire new knowledge); the style and the capacity of learning, the experience and the student's capacity of intellectual and social learning (adaptation to the rules and to responsibilities of the education centered on the learner). The present study has three important objectives: to identify the personal aspects of the students in relation to the preferred learning environment; identifying the level of personal relevance in relation to the informational content of the course support; identifying the preference for learning knowledge integrated in real life, as a step in authentic learning; identification of the personal perspective regarding the organization of the learning, of the structuring of an individual learning plan that involves taking decisions to establish the time periods, of conscious organization of the learning activities, as a premise of the student's autonomy in the learning activity.

Abstract:
"Academic leaders in the United States are tasked with establishing university strategic plans that facilitate a holistic educational experience in order to meet the needs of our diverse student populations. A holistic education includes the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual (meaning of life, finding purpose) necessities of our students. To this end, let us consider the leaders accountable for upholding this ethical imperative. This autoethnography examines the concept of Whiteness as Property (WaP) (Harris, 1993) to identify how the distribution of power amongst educational leaders maintains whites in a space of racialized privilege while using people of color to signal their commitment to establishing a diverse university culture. Using the WaP lens, allows for the analyses of the practices, behaviors, and other social performances administrators engage in to construct their leadership identities in relation to the current sociopolitical milieu concerning inclusion and diversity. Autoethnography illuminates these leadership practices in unique ways—the narratives are from the perspective of the non-traditional leader. We serve to collectively lead our universities in the right direction to meet our strategic goals and provide equable education for all students. As a working-class Latina occupying educational leadership roles, autoethnography permits the theorization of my liminal perspective to underscore the interconnected role of universities as apparatuses assisting in capital accumulation, legitimation, and production. The narratives provide an analytical and profoundly humanistic understanding of the experiences that shape our conscious behaviors, actions, and thoughts in our workplace."

for Social Science, Advisory Commitee. The impact of climate change on consumer food behaviours: Identification of potential trends and impacts. Food Standards Agency, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.icl350.

Full text
Abstract:
The Advisory Committee on Social Sciences (ACSS) was established by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to bring social science expertise to the Agency’s pursuit of food safety, food authenticity, and regulatory excellence. In fulfilling its remit, the Agency needs advice from a wide range of expertise, and this includes insights from disciplines such as behavioural science and economics as much as from the medical, agricultural, and animal health domains. It is crucial to understand how we as consumers, as well as the industries that feed us, might adapt our behaviours, perceive risks or alter our purchasing patterns. Climate Change is now widely accepted as one of the gravest risks facing human well-being, not least because of its possible effects on the food system. These effects could be radical and sudden and are inherently unpredictable. At the same time, humans are extraordinarily adaptable and innovative, and so responses to this threat are also unpredictable. Many people are already ‘doing their bit’ towards the ‘Net Zero’ aspiration by adapting their diet, changing their consumption patterns, or striving to avoid waste. As one of the many governmental bodies concerned with food supply the FSA has a strong interest in horizon scanning likely responses to climate change and understanding where it might impact its work. The ACSS therefore offered to help with this large task and formed a Working Group on Climate Change and Consumer Behaviours (CCCB). We were fortunate to be able to begin our work by hosting a workshop with experts in the field to illuminate the trends already being observed, or considered possible. Following this we then convened a group of colleagues across the FSA to deepen understanding of how the identified trends might impact on food safety, food authenticity and regulation. We took as our initial scope end consumers (rather than the businesses that serve them), and we looked for behaviours that appear to be ones that consumers have adopted to respond to the Net Zero call. The concepts of ‘choice’ and ‘preference’ in relation to behaviour is complex, as much behaviour does not follow choice or preference. In future, climate change may bring about changes to food availability and price that mean that choices are constrained. Equally, consumer preferences may feed back into the supply chain, and lead to a degree of choice ‘editing’ by food businesses. These complexities are beyond our scope for the moment, but, as experts participating in our workshop emphasized, must be considered. To get the full value of the expertise we were able to assemble, and the added value from our consultants, Ipsos UK who constructed and ran the first workshop, it is important to read the full report. It is also important to go directly to the centres of expertise for the insights that surfaced, but that we could only dip into and summarise. In this overview, the CCCB working group wants to highlight what we felt were some of the most interesting lines of enquiry, which are shown in table 1 below. We have to stress that these are possible trends of concern to the FSA, not necessarily with already observable effects, and more work needs to be done to explore them. We are conscious that the Science Council also has a WG on Net Zero, with a wider scope than that of the ACSS, and we are closely in touch to ensure that the work is complementary. I would therefore like to commend the work of the ACSS CCCB working group to the FSA, and we look forward to discussing how we can be of further help. I would also like to wholeheartedly thank everyone involved in making the workshops such stimulating and insightful exercises.

Full text
Abstract:
The PREPARE (Promoting collaborative policies of inclusion relating to children of far right and Islamist parents in Western Europe) project aims to identify vulnerabilities and stigmas that children may face when their parents are involved in violent extremist (VE) networks, and how frontline practitioners can best address them through a collaborative approach centred on the needs of the child. It aims to support these children by supporting frontline practitioners working with these children and their families in six European countries (the Netherlands, Spain, France, Sweden, Germany and Kosovo) to develop a state-of-the-art Child Vulnerability and Intervention Tool and training modules for practitioners. Central to the PREPARE project is ensuring that human rights, the rule of law, and children’s rights remain at the forefront throughout the development and implementation of interventions and programmes aimed at supporting children of families with links to VE. This report thus aims to provide guidance for practitioners on how to support these children through a human rights- and rule of law-compliant approach, that centres on children’s needs, well-being, and long-term prospects, and helps mitigate the risks of stigmatisation, polarisation, and discrimination. This report starts by providing an overview of the rights of the child, as defined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), including the four general principles that should inform the implementation of all other rights, as well as any decisions and interventions affecting children, namely the non-discrimination principle, the best interests of the child, the child’s inherent right to life, survival and development, and the child’s right to express their views freely. It notably aims to inform practitioners on what these rights are, to what extent children raised in families with links with VE might see some of these rights infringed upon, as well as how they should inform their work. Finally, this report focuses on providing guidance on identified good practices to support children growing in families with links to VE, which include adopting victim-centred, individually-tailored, gender- and age- conscious approach, developing multidisciplinary and multi-actor programmes, and providing adequate training for practitioners. In addition, the report will further address some of the key challenges and practises to avoid in regards to the safeguarding the rights of children in families with links to VE. Practices to avoid notably include security-centred approaches, one-size-fits-all responses, practices causing re-traumatisation, lack of trust between children and implementers, lack of and/or inadequate training, and lack of long-term funding to ensure sustainable support for children having been exposed to VE environments.
