This three image-essay looks at how depictions of modern woman were central in advertising designs and imported products in the context of gender, identity, and design in early twentieth-century China. The adaptation of EuroAmerican concepts, linked to modernisation in local contexts resulted in both the production of hybrid poster designs to promote merchandise, they embody gender fluid design. This essay uses three specific images to situate objects, image and context, before highlighting specific elements contained within each as examples of mid-century gender narratives.

Through methods such as ethnography, this knowledge can be made explicit, which makes the discipline of design capable of connecting with other academic disciplines. AbstractWhat happens to a squeezer, a coffee maker, a corkscrew, when they leave the kitchen and become part of a film set? What happens when material culture is transformed into visual culture? What new roles, meanings and connections to the subject, do objects find themselves constructing in the content continuum of virtual media? This paper attempts to answer, albeit partially, these questions by using a specific case study, namely the analysis of the presence of some of the most famous Italian design objects, the kitchen objects by Alessi, within the American filmography of the last twenty

Though benefits of Experience Sampling (ES) for experience design and research are apparent, the method has not been widely used in the field. As for the reasons, the following are prominent: 1) methodological issues as conventional ES obtains contextual experience information from the participants’ description of the context), and 2) a lack of theoretical framework enabling researchers to carry systematical analysis and extraction of meaningful experiences. In order to deal with these issues, the researchers have created an adapted ES model, named ‘Context-Specific Experience Sampling’, by wh

Several design analysis process models exist in the literature for the planning, execution and follow-up of such design analysis tasks. Most of these process models deal explicitly with design analysis tasks within two specific contexts: the context of design evaluation, and the context of design optimization. There are, however, several more contexts within which design analysis tasks are executed. Originating from industrial practice, four contexts were found to

However, integrating state-of-the-art machine learning models and manufacturing processes is often challenging due to the distance between these fields. This paper proposes guidelines and questions to explore model architecture options and extract valuable information from ChatGPT’s natural language processing capabilities.
