SUMMARYIn March 2002, an outbreak ofSalmonellaEnteritidis (SE) infections occurred at a convention centre in Dallas, Texas and continued for 6 weeks. We conducted epidemiological studies, obtained clinical and environmental cultures, and interviewed employees to identify risk factors for infection. From 17 March–25 April 2002, the implicated hotel kitchen catered 41 multi-day conferences attended by 9790 persons. We received 617 illness reports from residents of 46 states. Sauces or items served with sauces were implicated in three cohort studies. SE phage-type 8 was identified as the agent. E

In anticipation of an acute strain on established medical facilities in Dallas, Texas, federal officials worked in conjunction with local medical personnel to convert a convention center into a Federal Medical Station capable of caring for patients affected by COVID-19. A 200,000 square foot event space was designated as a direct patient care area, with surrounding spaces repurposed to house ancillary services. Given the highl

Abstract Background The record rainfall following Hurricane Harvey’s landfall along the Texas coast on August 25, 2017 caused prolonged, widespread flooding, which devastated Houston and areas along the southern Gulf Coast. With shelters in Houston at capacity, residents from adjacent affected regions were evacuated elsewhere, and Dallas received over 3,800 evacuees at a single convention center shelter. Approaches to infectious disease surveillance and prevention in this mega-shelter setting were assessed and refined during the response. Methods Teams of epidemiologists and medical students r

Background: In the setting of global warming, natural disasters are increasing in pace and scope. Although natural disasters themselves do not cause outbreaks, the breakdowns in sanitary infrastructure and the displacement of populations, often to crowded shelters, have caused outbreaks. Dr. W. A. Criswell is the well known pastor of the twenty-seven thousand member historic First Baptist Church in downtown Dallas, Texas. He has held the position for the past forty-three years. Until now no one has attempted an in-depth study of Criswell's educational contributions to the First Baptist Church (which have also been adopted into the Southern Baptist denomination, America's largest Protestant religious organization). Although Criswell has been the Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas for many years, this was by no means his introduction to the pastorate. In 1928 h

The 1989 U.S. Supreme Court case of Texas v. Johnson invalidated prohibitions on desecrating the American flag that had been in force in forty-eight states. The controversial case began when Gregory Lee Johnson joined in a political demonstration during the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas, and burned a flag. He was eventually convicted of violating a Texas law that prohibits vandalizing respected objects. His conviction was later overturned, whereupon the state of Texas appealed to the Supreme Court. Abstract My mother-Mary Elizabeth Haggerty-smoked her first cigarette in 1936. She was 14. It was a Kool, with a filter tip made of cork. In more than fifty years as a smoker, she never forgot that cigarette. The occasion was her first formal dance, on the roof of a hotel in Dallas, Texas, some 400 miles from her home in the small town of Dumas. She remembered the feel and the rustle of the apple-green taffeta dress she was wearing, how the city lights looked from the roof of the hotel, the promise of adventure that seemed to hang in the night air.

She had served in the Texas state senate before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first African American woman from the South to serve in that body. Jordan won high praise for her public addresses, notably her opening statement before the House Judiciary Committee during impeachment hearings for President Richard Nixon in 1974.
