Background: Corneal fluorescein sodium staining is a valuable diagnostic method for various ocular surface diseases. However, the examination results are highly dependent on the subjective experience of ophthalmologists. Objectives: To develop an artificial intelligence system based on deep learning to provide an accurate quantitative assessment of sodium fluorescein staining score and the size of cornea epithelial patchy defect. Design: A prospective study. Methods: We proposed an artificial intelligence system for automatically evaluating corneal staining scores and accurately measuring patc

Chlorine (Cl2) exposure poses a significant risk to ocular health, with the cornea being particularly susceptible to its corrosive effects. Antioxidants, known for their ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and alleviate oxidative stress, were explored as potential therapeutic agents to counteract chlorine-induced damage. In vitro experiments using human corneal epithelial cells showed decreased cell viability by chlorine-induced ROS production, which was reversed by antioxidant incubation. The mitochondrial membrane potential decreased due to both low and high doses of Cl2 expo

ABSTRACT Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an important agent of induction of ocular pathology following corneal injury or wearing of contaminated contact lenses. The mechanism of LPS uptake through the corneal epithelium is unclear, and the role played by inflammatory cells in this phenomenon has not been previously assessed. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled LPS from Escherichia coli was deposited onto the abraded corneas of New Zealand White rabbits. Epifluorescence microscopy of living excised corneas revealed diffuse LPS staining in the epithelial and stromal layers only in the vicin

This study was designed to identify whether topical fluorescein, a common ophthalmic tool, affects laser in vivo confocal microscopy of the cornea, a tool with growing applications. Twenty-five eye care specialists were asked to identify presence or absence of fluorescein in 99 confocal micrographs of healthy corneas. Responses were statistically similar to guessing for the epithelium (48% ± 14% of respondents correct per image) and the subbasal nerve plexus (49% ± 11% correct), but results were less clear for the stroma. Dendritic immune cells were quantified in bilateral images from subjects

Background: Corneal fluorescein staining is a key biomarker in evaluating dry eye disease. However, subjective scales of corneal fluorescein staining are lacking in consistency and increase the difficulties of an accurate diagnosis for clinicians. This study aimed to propose an automatic machine learning-based method for corneal fluorescein staining evaluation by utilizing prior information about the spatial connection and distribution of the staining region. Methods: We proposed an end-to-end automatic machine learning-based classification model that consists of staining region identification

ABSTRACT Introduction The current study was designed to test the potential role of recombinant human MG53 (rhMG53) protein on protecting against alkaline-induced corneal injury in mice. Materials and Methods A round filter paper with 2-mm diameter was soaked in 1 mol/L of NaOH solution. The mouse alkaline injury was generated by placing the filter paper directly on the cornea for 30 seconds and washed with 30-mL saline; 10 µL of rhMG53 solution (20 µg/mL) or saline control was topically administrated on the mouse corneas (twice per day for 10 days). Re-epithelialization was measured by fluores

Purpose. To evaluate the wound healing effect of doxycycline and its underlying mechanisms in a rat model of corneal alkali burn. Methods. Male SD rats were administered 1.0 N NaOH in the right cornea for 25 seconds and randomly divided into the doxycycline group and the control group, with 84 rats in each group. 1.0 g·L−1 doxycycline eye drops (doxycycline group) or vehicle (control group) was topically instilled onto the rat cornea after chemical injury. Three days, 7 days, and 14 days after alkali burn, microscopy was used to observe corneal wound healing by fluorescein staining and the deg

Abstract Purpose To describe the clinical appearance of corneal epithelial cell microerosions associated with keratomycosis in the horse. Methods Retrospective clinical study. Results Multifocal, punctate, superficial corneal opacities with positive rose bengal retention were noted in six horses with presumed ‘viral keratitis’. Faint fluorescein staining was also present in three cases. Equine herpesvirus tissue culture inoculation was negative for a cytopathic effect in three cases. Aspergillus (n= 3), Curvularia (n= 1), and an unidentified fungus (n= 1) were cultured in five horses, and hyph

Purpose: Solution-induced corneal staining (SICS) has been the subject of much debate in the clinical literature. While it has been suggested that this form of staining indicates toxicity of the cornea, microscopy studies have suggested that cells treated with multi-purpose solutions (MPS) known to produce SICS in vivo are undamaged. There is further debate in the literature as to whether or not sodium fluorescein (‘fluorescein’) actually enters epithelial cells or not. The aim of this work was to investigate the cellular mechanisms involved in SICS by developing an in vitro cell culture model

Pathogens of every type can affect the eye— bacterial, fungal, viral, protozoal, and parasitic. The eye is a complex structure but for the purposes of categorizing infections it can be viewed as a series of layers, which are: ● Conjunctiva ● Cornea ● Vitreous humour ● Retina The bulk of acute conjunctivitis is viral— up to 90% of infection will be due to adenovirus. Enterovirus species can cause acute epidemic haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, e.g. coxsackie A 24 virus, enterovirus 70. Bacterial causes are more common in children than adults and include S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, and H. influenzae.
