The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the semantic and syntactic characteristics of the discourse marker actually, and then to describe and explain how it is used by mothertongue (MT) Xhosa speakers who have learned English as an additional language. Such a description may provide a useful benchmark for comparison with MT norms. This thesis explores the use of discourse markers (DMs) in the speech of Chinese non-native speakers (NNSs) of English and native speakers (NSs), using corpus methodologies, the 'Linear Unit Grammar' analysis (Sinclair and Mauranen 2006) and text-based analyses. Using a corpus of school essays of Swedish students in year 9 and 12 of junior and senior high school, the present study compares the level of formality and frequency of discourse markers in the respective year groups. Based on previous literature, discourse markers found in the essays are categorized as either formal or informal. Ten randomly selected essays from each year group are analyzed. The results show that there are discrepancies between grade 9 and year 12 in both formality and frequency of discourse markers. The differences can be connected to second language acquisition and context

This thesis reports on an exploratory corpus-based study of the dynamic and hybrid aspects of response to lexical repetition in the three translations of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury into Lithuanian, Polish and Russian. The main aim was to explore and devise the dimensions of comparing the translators’ choices in terms of shapes that I argue to be variably sensitive to the factors of frequency, content and distance among word repetitions found in an original text in contrast to the mainstream assumption of Translation Theory that the tendency is to lose repetitions for aesthetic reasons.
