Health is a basic human right enshrined in the South African Constitution. It is the responsibility of government to ensure that the nation is healthy because good health is a prerequisite for social and economic development as well as an outcome of that process. Special attention on the healthcare needs of rural communities should be given because these communities were the worst affected by the legacy of the apartheid regime.
