The aim of this thesis was to investigate respiratory plasticity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) confronted with long-term changes in water gas composition (hypoxia, hyperoxia or hypercapnia) either as embryos or adults. The ventilatory responses to acute changes in water gas composition (hypoxia, hypercapnia or cyanide) were assessed using a non-invasive technique (Altimiras and Larsen, 2000) to continuously monitor breathing frequency (f R) and relative breathing amplitude. In most organisms the cellular response to hypoxia is mediated by the master regulator hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1). Zebrafish embryos can also arrest development (suspended animation) to tolerate low oxygen. I tested the hypothesis that induction of HIF-1 and associated target genes (eg. erythropoietin) during embryonic development would alter the hypoxia tolerance phenotype of larval and adult fish. Σκοπός της εργασίας ήταν να μελετήσει την επίδραση του ενδοειδικού ανταγωνισμού, κατά τη διάρκεια της μεταμόρφωσης, στο ρυθμό αύξησης, στην αναλογία φύλου και στο σχήμα του σώματος του zebrafish. Εφαρμόσθηκαν 4 πειραματικές συνθήκες σε τρεις επαναλήψεις. Η θερμοκρασία ανάπτυξης αποτελεί παράγοντα μεγάλης σημασίας στην οντογένεση των ιχθύων, αφού ως ποικιλόθερμοι οργανισμοί είναι συνεχώς εκτεθειμένοι στις μεταβολές του περιβάλλοντός τους.
