Dialektisk beteendeterapi (DBT) är idag den behandlingsmetod för behandling av borderline personlighetsstörning (BPS) som idag har starkast empiriskt stöd i ett flertal randomiserade och kontrollerade studier. Inom vuxenpsykiatrin, Sunderby sjukhus i Norrbotten har under drygt två års tid pågått ett projekt i syfte att införa och bedriva DBT vid kliniken samt utvärdera resultat av behandlingen. Patientmaterialet består av 6 st kvinnor med BPS-diagnos i åldrarna mellan 19-23 år(M=21,3). Selvskading er en relativt hyppig problematferd i ungdomsalderen. Forskning antyder en sammenheng mellom vanskelige familieforhold, emosjonsdysregulering og selvskading. Dialektisk atferdsterapi (DBT) er en behandlingsform som fokuserer på bedring innen disse områdene. Basert på en gjennomgang av relevant empiri og teori er målet med denne oppgaven å drøfte effekten av DBT på selvskading hos ungdom. Oppgaven har videre som hensikt å presentere og diskutere mulige mekanismer for bedring. Denne litteraturgjennomgangen viser at DBT er en lovende tilnærming i behandling av selvskading hos ungdom.
