In 2008, resolution 168 of the National Council of Private Insurance (CNSP) allowed international reinsurers to request authorization to operate in Brazil from the Superintendence of Private Insurance (SUSEP). This led to changes in the insurance and reinsurance markets. There is a lack of in-depth studies to evaluate the growth of the reinsurance market since its effective opening, taking into account macroeconomic factors and market reserve. This study aims to evaluate the size of the reinsurance market by examining: the main sectors of business that yield reinsurance, market concentration,

The increasing frequency and severity of natural catastrophes due to climate change is expected to cause higher natural disaster losses in the future. Reinsurance companies bear a large share of this risk in the form of excess-of-loss coverage, where they underwrite the most extreme portion of insurers’ risk portfolios. Past experience has shown that after a very large natural disaster, or multiple disasters in close succession, the recapitalization need of reinsurers could trigger a “hard” reinsurance capital market, where a high demand for capital increases the price charged by investors, wh

In this study, we assess factors influencing the demand for private reinsurance by public export credit agencies and export-import banks (ECAs), focusing on their specific characteristics. ECAs play a crucial role in bridging market gaps by offering trade credit insurance and investment guarantees, as well as equity and export financing. Together with private actors they were supporting more than USD 2.5 trillion of payment risk protection for trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2023. The market mechanism is the mechanism of interrelation and interaction of the basic elements of the market – demand, supply, prices, competition, and the basic economic laws of the market. Supply and demand are interdependent elements of the mechanism. The former is determined by the solvent demand of consumers and offer a set of goods proposed by sellers. The ratio between them is formed in an inverse relationship, determining the corresponding changes in the level of prices for goods.

This technical paper provides us with an in-depth explanation of how losses due to catastrophes are insured and who absorbs the costs of compensating the insured assets. In the absence of an effective insurance market, the government often becomes the de facto financier of postdisaster rehabilitation efforts. Alternatively, governments can encourage the local insurance industry to engage in risk financing arrangements through insurance pools that, in turn, may cover higher exposures in the global reinsurance and capital markets. In Australia repurchase (repo) obligations are traded bilaterally 'over-the-counter' between parties, rather than on an exchange. As a result, it is difficult to obtain quotes of executable prices, trading volumes, and related data that are representative of the market. Market conditions are therefore not easy to assess and often dependent on anecdotal evidence. Over the years, the Reserve Bank of Australia has published data and analysis of the repo market by providing indirect perspectives using data from its own open market operations that are conducted using repos.
