Objective: Determining the possible role of Demodex mites in patients with chronic urticaria Methods: Demodex screening results in 49 patients with chronic urticaria were evaluated retrospectively. Results: The mean number of Demodex mites per 1 cm2 measured with standardized skin-surface biopsy (SSSB) was 0.89 which was at a similar level as control groups in the literature. Conclusion: Demodex mites seemed not to play a role in patients with chronic urticaria who had no facial eruptions. Feline demodicosis is a parasitary dermatophathy that affects cats at a much lower frequency than the one observed in dogs. There are three species identified in felines: Demodex gatoi, Demodex cati and a third species unofficially called Demodex felis. Clinical signs are widely variable and seem to differ according to the individual species of mite involved. Diagnostic depends on mite identification upon microscopic examination of skin scrapings; Demodex gatoi may also be found in feces. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are commonly present on facial skin and frequently noted via Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM) examination. These mites inhabit follicles and are often seen in groups of two or more, although D. brevis is usually found as a solitary mite. When observed through RCM, they are typically present as refractile, round groupings seen on a transverse image plane inside the sebaceous opening, as they are vertically oriented, and their exoskeletons refract under near-infrared light. Inflammation may occur, leading to a variety of skin disorders; nonetheless, t

AbstractAustralian tea tree oil (TTO) and its extract terpinen-4-ol (T4O) are found to be effective in moderating demodex-related diseases. Their possible effects are lowering the mite counts, relieving the demodex-related symptoms and modulating the immune system especially the inflammatory response. This review summarizes the topical treatments of TTO and T4O in human demodicosis, their possible mechanism of actions, side-effects and potential resistance in treating this condition. Although current treatments other than TTO and T4O are relatively effective in controlling the demodex mite pop

Demodicosis mostly involves eyes and facial skin, whereas it has become increasingly associated as an pathologic factor in diabetes mellitus and cancer. Demodex diagnostics is based on a simple classical microscopy. The availability of modern molecular biology techniques helps to get to know interspecies diversity of Demodex. SUMMARYThe sequences of four mitochondrial genes were determined for Demodex mites isolated from two distantly related species within the family Cervidae, and identified morphologically as belonging to the species Demodex kutzeri. The sequences were used to test the hypothesis that Demodex are strictly host-specific, and hence cospeciate with their hosts: (1) The estimated divergence time between mites found on elk vs humans agreed closely with a previous estimate of the time that these host species last shared a common ancestor, suggesting cospeciation of mites and hosts, at least over long e

Abstract Pentasomes The Pentastomida, a class of the Arthropoda, is difficult to place within the zoologic hierarchy. The parasites in this class are considered by some as highly modified annelids and by others as being closer to the crustaceans (Riley et al. 1978). The all-inclusive name pentastomes refers to this group of parasites and the infection they produce as pentastomiasis ( often as porocephalosis). However, because there is no conclusively documented infection in humans with a species of Porocephalus (Fain, 1975), the term porocephalosis should not be used. The species Linguatula se
