Abstract:
A persistent oral tradition links Derwent Coleridge, first principal of St Mark's College, Chelsea, to the training of deacon schoolmasters during the period 1841 to 1864. This innovative model of elementary schoolteacher made a distinctive contribution to teacher training in England. Justified theologically rather pedagogically, the deacon schoolmaster model gave the college a unique character in the surge towards a comprehensive system of Church education. This thesis breaks fresh ground by using documentary evidence to test the oral tradition. The introduction of the model and subsequent tr

Within the Derwent valley, to the south east of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, lies the Derwentcote Historic Landscape. The site consists of three historical monuments, a forge, a steel furnace and a row of worker's cottages which are in the stewardship of Historic England. This thesis asks how the Derwentcote Iron and Steel works operated within the overall iron working landscape of the Derwent valley. The thesis examines for the first time the archaeology of a pioneering iron industry scattered throughout the whole of a valley which is geographically divided between the counties of Northumberland, Dur

Abstract:
This PhD investigates cotton workers’ housing at four industrial settlements within the Derwent Valley, Derbyshire. These sites at Cromford, Belper, Milford and Darley Abbey are recognised as key communities within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Derwent Valley Mills. Whilst large amounts of scholarly effort has been dedicated to the study of these sites the primary focus has been on the mill complexes and their industrialist owners, Arkwright, Strutt and the Evans. This study uses a buildings-led approach to examine three major themes. Firstly, the design and construction of workers housi

Abstract:
The Derwent River is one of the largest rivers in Tasmania by any measurement standard. It drains Lake St Clair in the southern central highlands, and meanders over 200km down to Storm Bay south of Hobart where it eventually joins the Tasman Sea. The modem river deposits most of its suspended sediment load between New Norfolk and Bridgewater, and an area of fluvio-deltaic mud flat is developed north of the Bridgewater causeway. South of the causeway is the Estuary proper, and this extends to the entrance of Storm Bay, marked by the significant widening of the water body just south of the I

The distribution and bioavailability of zinc, lead, copper and cadmium in sediment samples from the Derwent River has been examined by means of sequential selective extraction. Two types of sediments; core sediment and surface sediments, were used in the examination. They were taken from two sampling sites, one near the Derwent Sailing Squadron and the other in Prince of Wales Bay. The majority of the metals in the core sediment were in residual form and appeared to be accumulated in the top part. Marine debris is a recognised form of marine pollution. Its impacts on marine biota (marine mammals, sea birds, coral reefs, plants, fishes) have been widely documented. Apart from this, its impacts on human health have in addition drawn the attention of global community. It has impacted tourism due to the reducing aesthetic values of marine environment. A high economic cost is associated with clean ups in order to minimize these impacts associated to marine debris. The early life-history of the introduced Northern Pacific seastar (Asterias amurensis) in the Derwent Estuary, Tasmania, is investigated with an aim to identify opportunities for improved management. The model is parameterized with species-specific gamete traits measured in the estuary population, and is validated using empirically determined estimates of fertilization success, which required containing gametes in collection flasks. Although the larvae are abundant around Tasmania and readily distinguished from those of other fish in plankton samples, it has been the subject of few scientific studies.
