A series of novel Ionic Liquids (ILs) consisting of tetraalkyl-phosphonium or ammonium cations and phenol or polyhydroxybenzene counteranions were synthesized following a metal- and halogen-free methodology previously reported by our group. The IL synthetic methodology included two steps: an initial trialkylamine or trialkylphosphine quaternization step using dimethylcarbonate (DMC) as the methylating agent, obtaining the corresponding trialkylmethyl-phosphonium or ammonium methylcarbonate ILs. Methylcarbonate ILs underwent metathesis reaction in presence of acidic counteranions precursors (e.

Abstract:
Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that infects neutrophils to cause human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Sialyl Lewis x (sLex)-modified P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) is the confirmed receptor utilized by A. phagocytophilum to bind and invade human neutrophils and myeloid cell lines. As an obligate intracellular pathogen, the binding of A. phagocytophilum to a host cell receptor is a prerequisite step for entry and replication, and thus its survival. However, the bacterial adhesins mediating this process have yet to be identified. In this study, we s

Abstract:
Cancer represents one of the most relevant and widespread diseases in the modern age. In this context, integrin receptors are important for the interactions of cells with extracellular matrix and for the development of both inflammation and carcinogenic phenomena. There are many tricks to improve the bioactivity and receptor selectivity of exogenous ligands; one of these is to integrate the amino acid sequence into a cyclic peptide to restrict its conformational space. Another approach is to develop small peptidomimetic molecules in order to enhance the molecular stability and open the way to

Abstract:
Studies were undertaken to evaluate the potential of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to detect DNA effects (including DNA damage and mutations) in aquatic invertebrates, following their exposure to a variety of environmental contaminants under laboratory conditions. After rigorous optimisation of the RAPD method, the protocol, which used a high annealing temperature (50"C for 10-mer primers), was found to generate good-quality DNA profiles from groups of organisms belonging to the bacterial, plant and animal kingdoms. The RAPD method was initially used to detect benzo(a)pyrene [B(
