Abstract:
ASD has an estimated prevalence of 1 in 68, making it one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Furthermore, its prevalence is increasing; therefore, there is a rising demand for screening tools to help achieve beneficial early diagnosis and intervention outcomes. However, there is a lack of literature around ASD and ASD screening tool validity in South Africa. This thesis adapted and assessed the use of South African English, Afrikaans and IsiXhosa versions of the 23-item Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) screening tool, for a Western Cape state hospita

Four groups of children aged between 7 and 12 years (38 ADHD-only, 39 RD-only, 17 ADHD+RD and 37 Normal Controls) were tested Energization Processing, Executive Functioning (Inhibition, Set-shifting, Strategy Application and Verbal Fluency) and Episodic Memory. Children with ADHD-only may present a double deficit of Energization and Strategy Application. Energization and Inhibition deficit shown by children with RD-only are putatively derived from their verbal processing impairment. Childr

The aim of this thesis was to investigate the neural underpinnings of persistent developmental stuttering. We explored neural systems important for speech-motor integration and focused on subcortical control systems: the basal ganglia and cerebellum. A secondary aim of this work was to distinguish effects related to general traits of the disorder from those reflecting specific states of stuttered speech. To address these aims we used a variety of neuroimaging methodologies as well as an extensive neuropsychological and empirical test battery. Our examination of neural pathway microstructure us

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric disorder characterised by turbulent interpersonal relationships, impaired self image, impulsivity, and a recurrent pattern of unstable affect which is usually evident by early adulthood. It has a community prevalence rate of two per cent, and approximately nine per cent of people diagnosed with BPD commit suicide. This suggests that BPD has one of the highest lethality rates of all psychiatric disorders. The course of the disorder shows a steady improvement over the course of early adulthood with the majority of cases remitting by

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with multiple neurobiological aetiologies, which could be genetic, structural, metabolic or immune-mediated. ASDs are diagnosed with deficits in social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviours, and are associated with sensorial atypicalities. 30% of cases have co-existing epilepsy. A series of in vitro, in vivo and post-mortem investigations were undertaken to examine sensory atypicalities in ASD. In vitro characterisation of hippocampal neuronal cultures using immunofluorescence demonstrated the presence of multipl

The pervasiveness of autism has significantly increased over the past 2 decades with the 2014 Center for Disease Control and Prevention report indicating 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Early intervention is recommended as the most effective treatment approach. Nevertheless, previous research has indicated that White children are diagnosed with ASD about 1.5 years earlier than are Non-White children. A current gap remains in literature regarding ASD and different racial groups, and evidence has been inconclusive regarding disparities in identifying and diagn

Abstract:
Although social deficits are a defining feature in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), not enough is known about the origin and impact of these impairments. Current research agrees that deficits in Theory of Mind (ToM) contribute to the social disconnectedness evident in children with ASD. Furthermore, studies in neurotypical populations have found significant links between attachment security and ToM acquisition, and some have posited parenting behaviours as predictors of social development. Less is known about these construct in children with ASD. This study aimed to form a foundational view of

Abstract:
Many research studies on the theme of psychological and emotional development focus on the relationship between one set of sociological variables or events recorded/remembered at one point in the life course (childhood, youth, adulthood) with another set of variables measured at one point in time later in middle age or old age. Other studies look at the neurobiological changes that take place during each stage of growth and the manifest reactions and behaviors specific for each stage of development. The present paper reviews such approaches by way of comparing the findings of varied studies an

Emotions, in the field of Neuropsychology, are a topic of contemporary relevance due to the impact they have on a person's development. At the brain level, emotions arise from the activation of brain circuits in response to stimuli. Treatments have focused on traditional psychological intervention, which today, thanks to technological advances, includes the use of technology, so it is necessary to have available material that has been validated and standardized in the area where it is to be used, which is the subject of this study.
