Full textDespite high levels of global connectedness, which is characteristically representative of our 21st century society, United States citizens have been found to be significantly unaware of global affairs. Though the Department of Education has named social media as a viable option for improving the internationalization of classroom curricula, little research exists to quantitatively support such a claim. As what little research does exist exclusively investigates Facebook, no research looks into the viability of other popular social media platforms, such as Twitter or Instagram. The purpose of this study was be to probe, through an experimental design, the extent to which the presentation of globally-related information, textually-based in the case of Twitter and visually-based in the case of Instagram, as well as the source of such information, whether it be from a professional news outlet or a casual social media user, may play in effecting the way American college students consume and process digital information pertaining to global affairs. Such findings will help to pioneer the relatively under-investigated digital intersection of communication and education.

Full textBackground: The use of dispersed teams in organisations has grown rapidly in the latest decades. A dispersed team that communicates with digital communication tools does not have the same prerequisites for communicating as a co-located team have. The previous research made about dispersed teams has mainly focused on international teams with large geographical distances and teams that for the most part consist of experts. Due to the pandemic covid-19, working in dispersed teams has become necessary for other types of teams. It is thereby motivated to conduct research about how the communication is affected in other types of dispersed teams. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how team communication is affected by the dispersion in teams where the team members are used to working co-located, by identifying and explaining consequences the dispersion of the team has on team communication. Method: This study is a qualitative multi-case study with an abductive approach and a realistic perspective. The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with eleven team members belonging to three different teams of students. Conclusion: The result of the study shows that dispersed teams using digital communication tools face several consequences regarding their communication. The fact that the team is not co-located leads to certain consequences and the use of digital communication tools leads to others. This study has identified 13 consequences within the communicative aspects: confirmation, the flow of the conversation, feedback, shared understanding and creativity. The study also shows that the consequences identified are closely connected in such a way that many of them affect each other. Why the interviewed teams were affected in this way can to some extent be explained by their inexperience in working with digital communication tools and unawareness of what it means for their communication.

Full textDue to globalization, increased competition and the development of information and communication technology (ICT) the way in which people work together in organizations has changed. Today it is common to organize work in virtual teams where the team members can communicate and collaborate without regard to time and place using digital communication tools. A crucial aspect for virtual teams is communication. On account of the fact that a large part of communication takes place via digital communication tools rather than face-to-face, virtual teams face challenges regarding communication. This study examines, through a qualitative case study, what aspects of communication are affected when communication largely takes place via digital communication tools rather than face-to-face in virtual teams. This is examined in connection to the need of communication in virtual teams, in what way the digital communication tools support communication as well as what social aspects are central to the communication in virtual teams. Four interviews were conducted with four different people working in two different virtual teams within an IT-company. We have reached the conclusion that the need for communication in virtual teams is affected by the frequency, quality and flexibility of the communication. The properties of the digital communication tools support communication in different ways as well as the way in which they are used. Prior research advocates using a combination of tools, but this notion may be challenged due to the constant development of technology. Furthermore, human and social aspects also affect communication and virtual teams must therefore manage aspects such as informal communication and trust.

Full textThis study examines how democratic organization of operations within Swedish non-profit organizations (NPO) has been affected because of rapid digitalization following covid-19. The study is inductive in nature and aims to study the prerequisites regarding democratic participation during annual meetings. The empirical data that creates the foundation for this research is based on qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey. The selection group studied comprises persons that have acted as chairman during both digital and physical annual meetings, as well as board members and employees within NPO's that have arranged or participated in annual meetings during covid-19. The study shows that there is a correlation between democratic prerequisites during digital annual meetings and the digital competence within the organization. Furthermore, preparations are shown to be more important regarding the democratic prerequisites than whether the annual meeting is conducted via physical or digital platforms. The results indicate that knowledge gained from the digitization of annual meetings during covid-19 could lead to better possibilities regarding participation and equal influence. Empirical data points out a possible future development where the organizations participating in the study will revert to using physical and hybrid meetings when conducting annual meetings. Hybrid meetings, where some participate physically and others digitally, are not to be recommended due to problems regarding equal participation and influence during the annual meeting.

Full textBackground: The construction industry is a complex workplace, constant changes take place, and conditions can change quickly. The construction workers are at higher risk than many other businesses that suffer an accident or illness at work because of an increased risk for e.g. the use of machines or fall from height. In every workplace there should be conducted a prevention against risks through a systematic program of safety inspection. Companies in the construction sector have identified a need to streamline the systematic work which now Build Safe AB while addressing and created a digital tool Build Safe to streamline security. The study is part of a research project at KTH, where the aim was to evaluate the digital tool Build Safe in the construction industry. Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate and describe the work on safety inspection in the construction industry and identifying success factors and challenges to achieve the quality and efficiency of the safety inspection work. Limitations: The author deals with safety inspection work in the construction industry confined to Sweden, the study does not address safety inspection work in other countries. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative design with inductive approach. It conducted a participant observation, group interviews and four telephone interviews. A semi-structured interview guide was used in all interviews. All participation was voluntary, and all the collected data was anonymised. Results: The results showed that the identified key success factors that created the prerequisite for a well-functioning safety inspection work in the construction industry was the involvement and commitment of the company on safety inspection work. By using a digital tool better opportunities for a successful safety inspection work was also created, and with good planning and good communication before and after the safety inspection tour created the conditions for a good work environment.

Full textThe interest in public participation is increasing and many municipalities express a wish to expand and improve their dialogue with the citizens. It is important to involve the citizens at an early stage in the planning process to increase the influence and improve the public participation. Studies have shown that the plans in which the public is involved at an early stage in the planning process are more likely to pass without any objections. This study is primarily focused on Swedish municipalities and professionals in urban planning. The main purpose of the study is to systematically investigate methods and tools that Swedish municipalities use to communicate with the public. To find out what methods are used and how they work s questionnaire has been sent out to 62 municipalities of different size and geographical location. Four additional semi-structured interviews were conducted with three different municipalities. The result showed that Swedish municipalities mostly use different dialogue meetings communicate with the public. However, they express a wish to use more digital methods if they had the resources to do so. Many municipalities expressed dissatisfaction over how the public hearings and larger meetings work while it is on the contrary the most common methods of communication with the public. In order to improve public participation it is important to involve and invite the public to communicate at an early stage in the planning process and to use methods that will appeal to a wider audience.

Full textThis study has explored a recruitment company and its recruitment process. The aim of the study is to develop an understanding about how the recruitment company’s employees experience benefits and drawbacks of the changes done in the recruitment process due to the telework adapted because of the Covid-19 outbreak. A qualitative research method has been used and seven semi structured interviews have been conducted. The study adapted a hermeneutic interpretation process and the collected empirical material was analysed using a thematic analysis method. The respondents were involved in the recruitment process, and they had also worked within the organisation both before and during the pandemic. The result indicated that the area most affected by the telework in the recruitment process was the contact and the communication with the clients. The result also showed that the contact and communication between the candidates as well as the colleagues had changed to some extent. However, no changes have been made in the organisation’s recruitment tools. The experiences of the changes amongst the respondents have varied, but they have overall been positive.

Full textThe covid-19 pandemic led to large parts of the world's education system being forced to switch to distance education. This study examines opportunities that digital tools contribute to solving challenges with students learning, as mathematics education is transitioned to distance learning. Six semi-structured video interviews were conducted with mathematics teachers from upper secondary schools around Sweden. The categories identified on the basis of the interviews were Student motivation and mathematics performance, Assessment and Communication. Several students' motivation was disadvantaged by the physical distance, but some were favored by the situation. A fair assessment was considered impossible to carry out and synchronous communication decreased as students withdrew to ask for help. However, digital tools allow for higher attendance, formative assessment and increased asynchronous distance communication. The discussion highlights the opportunities with digital tools that this study contributes to and that teachers 'experiences of students are confirmed by previous research on students' experiences in distance education.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate sfi-teachers’ experiences of distance education in the spring of 2020. The study focuses on examining how digital tools were adapted to students’ differences, how communication with students was established and what teaching methods characterized sfi teachers’ distance education. By describing the transition to distance education caused by pandemics such as SARS and Covid-19, the challenges and opportunities that teachers face in the digital classroom environment are described. Thereafter, theoretical aspects of communication and the teacher’s role in creating relationships with students in the digital learning environment are highlighted. In order to understand the phenomenon of distance education in its entirety, further points of departure are presented that should be taken into account when such education is designed. This is an empirical study where method triangulation with both quantitative and qualitative studies. A total of 126 respondents responded to the online survey and six respondents participated in semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that the teachers’ approach to distance education during the pandemic, and the inequality in students’ digital competence and the students’ inadequate access to digital technology in connection with the transition, were decisive for how new teaching methods and teaching strategies were formed. Sfi teachers used the digital tools and digital resources that were already incorporated in the classroom education. Both synchronous and asynchronous communication were applied to a large extent, where synchronous communication was valued thanks to its similarity to the physical classroom layout and asynchronous communication because of the increased accessibility to teaching materials. The sfi teachers’ teaching challenges consisted of difficulties in being available to the students who needed support and in following up the students’ learning processes at a distance.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about students’ perspectives on the use of digital tools in social interactions, education and everyday life. In order to examine this area, students in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities have been interviewed. The interest for this subject arose when I during my work in special school sometimes experienced a lack of knowledge, regarding digital tools, on how to support the students fully in their education. Previous research shows positive results for students with intellectual disabilities regarding use of digitals tools during education. There are also studies that show that using digital tools can contribute to increase the independence and connection to the society for these people. This study is based on a sociocultural perspective, where education and personal growth is developed by interaction between people. In order to collect empirical data, a qualitative semi-structured interview method was selected. The results indicate that the students are using common functions in both smart phones and computers in a variety of contexts. According to the students, the digital tools are necessary for their education as well as their participation in all parts of the society. The study did not result in any features or applications used specifically for educating students in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities. The students expressed that they learned to use the tools by themselves or from friends. They also stated that they themselves found appropriate strategies and area of use for the tools that compensate for different disabilities or other difficulties both inside and outside the school. Regarding future research in this area one suitable approach could be to use the special education teacher’s perspective as a main source and explore the possibilities to further develop the digital tools the students already are familiar with, towards a better education.

Full textOn a daily basis, students encounter multimodal texts both at school and at leisure. Digitization has led to a change in how texts are read and produced. In addition, digitization contributes to both opportunities and difficulties for both teachers and pupils. The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers and students work with multimodal narrative texts in the Swedish subject in grades 1—3 and what opportunities and difficulties exist in the work. Teachers´ and pupils' opinion on the work with multimodal narrative texts will also be compared with each other. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective which considers the multimodal narratives as constructs in a social context. To collect material to my study I use the method interview, the teachers are personally interviewed and the students are interviewed in groups. The results of the study showes that writing and image are the most common modalities. The grades work in slightly different ways, but all teachers use pictures to support students' understanding. Digital tools are used extensively in Swedish teaching, projectors are used in reviews and reports, computers are used as search engines and to produce text on, and iPads are used in the same way as the computer but also to record audio and film. Teachers plan what students should do while students plan what they want to write about. But it's not always easy to figure out what to write about. The teachers feel that many students have a lack of imagination which the students themselves notice.

Full textThe use and incorporation of ICT in the knowledge society is increasingly widespread. Technology can play an important role in the value of the assets of the 21st century heritage. In the case of museums the need to diversify the existing supply is becoming clear due to the visitors’ increasing demand of tools for interpretation and interaction with the heritage. The purpose of museums in regard to integration of ICT can vary, influenced by the size of museums, the kind of technology used, as well as the use of ICT by visitors.. This research focuses on the use of the ICT made by the museums in Andorra, willing to analyze the adaptation to new technologies and the role played by ICT resources to find out which would be the main benefits resulting from the introduction of technologies in museums. The research focuses on the following specific goals: (1) identification of determing factors in the implementation of an ICT project in a museum; (2) analysis of museums in Andorra; (3) diagnose the ICT implementation degree of museums in Andorra and (4) determine the digital strategy at the andorran museums. We propose a qualitative methodology using tools such as questionnaires. The results will allow us to conclude how museum managers apply their knowledge of museums’ discipline in incorporating ICT and see how far and in which way museums can use the incorporation of ICT to improve strategic planning in museums.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to describe the thoughts of a number of teachers regarding how a social robot could be helpful in school situations for children who have long-term school absenteeism (remote students). There is no current research in this area, thus this investigation focus on how the social robot works for students with high absence due to illness instead.Four interviews were conducted with teachers with experience working with the social robot AV1. The starting point in the interviews was to capture how the teachers think the social robots could be an alternative to facilitate the return to school for remote students. Also the teachers´ experience on how a social robot could be used for students with problems such as social phobia or autism was discussed. The interviews were analysed from a socio-cultural perspective with assistance from coding and thematization from the content in the transcribed interviews.Based on the interviews, no distinct conclusion could be drawn regarding the success of a social robot in promoting the return to school of remote students. However, we have found examples in one interview which supported the use of the social robot, and were able to note the possibilities and obstacles according to the respondents. All the respondents have expressed themselves in a positive way about using social robots in the classroom. However, all were not as positive regarding the use of social robots to attempt to get children who have long-term school absenteeism back to school. In the final part of the thesis the amplifications of the results are discussed and what new questions that have arisen. The concept of social robots is a rather new phenomenon in the school environment and our work has demonstrated that there are many new areas to research to find out what new possibilities the social robots can offer. This is a new world with tools and methods that are novel, but which can be beneficial to education. Rather than being intimidated by innovative technology instruments, we must embrace their possibilities for enhancing student learning.
