Abstract:
The study focuses particularly on the effects digital tools may have on language learning for students with special needs. The qualitative empirical material was collected through interviews and observations in a Norwegian school. The observation involves four students from two school years (the first and the second students comes from year 8, and the third and fourth students comes from year 9). The data also comes from two different qualitative interviews with the headmaster of the same school. The main findings are that, digital tools are adapted for the majority of the students in the classroom by the school board. Students with disabilities, however, need more tools, and more support. Only the school board can change their own recommendations for the use of digital tools. A comparison between Norway’s and Sweden’s curriculum is also included, to contextualized the headmaster’s point of view upon the Norwegian curriculum when it comes to digital tools.

Abstract:
While knowledge is one of an organization’s greatest assets, it remains a challenge to facilitate knowledge transfer between people within an organization. Social influence has been studied in its role of facilitating information diffusion, which is necessary for knowledge transfer to occur. Among this research, tie strength, a quantifiable characteristic of a social network that determines the link between two nodes, has been measured to determine the impact of social influence on knowledge transfer and information dissemination within a social network. Current research that explores the impact of social influence on information diffusion has been conducted within public social networks due to the availability of data that can be gathered from public social online network systems, such as Facebook. With the emergence of collaboration technologies that exist in online social network tools being utilized within organizations, there is an opportunity to digitally collect information regarding information dissemination within a collaborative network. This study captured data from an online social network, specifically a unified communication tool, being used within a collaborative social network at a mid-sized South Central corporation. A content analysis of Lync messages for 1,749 connections was performed to quantitatively measure the influence of tie strength on information dissemination within a collaborative social network. The results demonstrated that tie strength had a significant impact on information dissemination using a collaborative system. Multivariate analysis of variance showed that tie strength had the largest impact on information dissemination using the instant messaging modality of a collaboration system.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which selected communication tools used by teachers who teach online are positively perceived by their students in improving feelings of self-efficacy and motivation, and which tools may be perceived to be significantly more effective than the others. Students from the Florida Virtual School, a leader in online course delivery for grades 6-12, were surveyed to find their perceptions about how their teachers' use of email, Instant Messaging, chat, the telephone, discussion area, whiteboard, and assignment feedback affected their motivation and success in an online high school course. Correlations were done to discover if there were any significant relationships between variables that relate to teacher interaction and motivation. In addition, distributions of student responses to survey questions about digital communication tools and demographics were examined. It was found that there is a high degree of correlation between frequency of teachers' use of digital communication tools and student's perception of their level of motivation. It was also found that the digital communication tools most frequently used by teachers in communicating with their students were email, the telephone, and assignment feedback, and that the students found these same tools the most helpful in their learning. In addition, no significant demographic differences were found in students' perception of teacher's use of tools to enhance learning and motivation in their courses except in the number of previous online courses taken. These findings can help direct online high school teachers in their selection of digital tools used to communicate with their students.

Abstract:

Despite high levels of global connectedness, which is characteristically representative of our 21st century society, United States citizens have been found to be significantly unaware of global affairs. Though the Department of Education has named social media as a viable option for improving the internationalization of classroom curricula, little research exists to quantitatively support such a claim. As what little research does exist exclusively investigates Facebook, no research looks into the viability of other popular social media platforms, such as Twitter or Instagram. The purpose of this study was be to probe, through an experimental design, the extent to which the presentation of globally-related information, textually-based in the case of Twitter and visually-based in the case of Instagram, as well as the source of such information, whether it be from a professional news outlet or a casual social media user, may play in effecting the way American college students consume and process digital information pertaining to global affairs. Such findings will help to pioneer the relatively under-investigated digital intersection of communication and education.

Abstract:
Background: The use of dispersed teams in organisations has grown rapidly in the latest decades. A dispersed team that communicates with digital communication tools does not have the same prerequisites for communicating as a co-located team have. The previous research made about dispersed teams has mainly focused on international teams with large geographical distances and teams that for the most part consist of experts. Due to the pandemic covid-19, working in dispersed teams has become necessary for other types of teams. It is thereby motivated to conduct research about how the communication is affected in other types of dispersed teams.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how team communication is affected by the dispersion in teams where the team members are used to working co-located, by identifying and explaining consequences the dispersion of the team has on team communication.  Method: This study is a qualitative multi-case study with an abductive approach and a realistic perspective. The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with eleven team members belonging to three different teams of students.  Conclusion: The result of the study shows that dispersed teams using digital communication tools face several consequences regarding their communication. The fact that the team is not co-located leads to certain consequences and the use of digital communication tools leads to others. This study has identified 13 consequences within the communicative aspects: confirmation, the flow of the conversation, feedback, shared understanding and creativity. The study also shows that the consequences identified are closely connected in such a way that many of them affect each other. Why the interviewed teams were affected in this way can to some extent be explained by their inexperience in working with digital communication tools and unawareness of what it means for their communication.

Abstract:
Wikipedia consists of an online encyclopedia created by users worldwide who collaborate to distribute knowledge and edit information in real-time. Although Wikipedia's accuracy has been a disputable and debatable issue in many recent studies, little academic research has systematically addressed how users interact with the platform's storytelling tools and how do they perceive and use Wikipedia's infrastructure, such as interactive tools. This exploratory study fulfills this gap and sheds light on users' perceptions about Wikipedia's interactivity. Moreover, Wikipedia is approached as an online community where collaboration, co-creation, and knowledge distribution play an important role. Therefore, it can be studied under the scope of Digital Humanities as well. The theoretical framework of interactive storytelling and digital communication suggests that hyperlinks, page preview bottoms, or interactive catalogs are applied in Wikipedia's environment to help users absorb information and construct their narratives. The findings of this thesis offer practical insights on how Wikipedia's interactive storytelling tools empower users with the ability to develop their stories and become editors/authors and provide a foundation for further academic research on user experience and how to improve interactivity and digital communication in Wikipedia

Abstract:
Digital technologies are becoming increasingly common tools in our daily lives. We use it for finding information, but also to communicate with people all over the world. With a vision to strengthen Swedish healthcare's digital resources, Sweden has made major efforts in this area. Improved living conditions have changed the demographic situation as people grow older, which in turn places higher demands on healthcare efficiency. Being able to meet these demands has made digitalization of healthcare increasingly important, but also demonstrating new challenges such as participation, transparency and usability. The purpose of this study has been to investigate if communicative tools can be created to facilitate nurses work with person-centred care and to enhance patients' positive experiences of their own care. The study is based on interviews and observations with nurses working within orthopaedic sections and employees working in facility management as well as administration within the hospital. The results show that digital solutions can be effective tools for enhancing person-centered care, but with automated solutions the physical encounter between nurses and patients can be reduced. The concepts that have been developed are two mobile applications. They were developed with the intention to make it easier for nurses to document and communicate patients' activity and care plans.

Abstract:
At KTH, students who want to start their degree project must complete a paper form called “UT-EXAR: Ansökan om examensarbete/application for degree project”. The form is used to determine students’ eligibility to start a degree project, as well as potential examiners for the project. After the form is filled in and signed by multiple parties, a student can initiate his or her degree project. However, due to the excessively time-consuming process of completing the form, an alternative solution was proposed: a survey in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) that replace s the UT-EXAR form. Although the survey reduces the time required by students to provide information and find examiners, it is by no means the most efficient solution. The survey suffers from multiple flaws, such as asking students to answer unnecessary questions, and for certain questions, presenting students with more alternatives than necessary. The survey also fails to automatically organize the data collected from the students’ answers; hence administrators must manually enter the data into a spreadsheet or other record. This thesis proposes an optimized solution to the problem by introducing a dynamic survey. Moreover, this dynamic survey uses the Canvas Representational State Transfer (REST) API to access students’ program-specific data. Additionally, this survey can use data provided by students when answering the survey questions to dynamically construct questions for each individual student as well as using information from other KTH systems to dynamically construct customized alternatives for each individual student. This solution effectively prevents the survey from presenting students with questions and choices that are irrelevant to their individual case. Furthermore, the proposed solution directly inserts the data collected from the students into a Canvas Gradebook. In order to implement and test the proposed solution, a version of the Canvas LMS was created by virtualizing each Canvas-based microservice inside of a Docker container and allowing the containers to communicate over a network. Furthermore, the survey itself used the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard. When testing the solution, it was seen that the survey has not only successfully managed to filter the questions and alternative answers based on the user’s data, but also showed great potential to be more efficient than a survey with statically-presented data. The survey effectively automates the insertion of the data into the gradebook.

Abstract:
Due to globalization, increased competition and the development of information and communication technology (ICT) the way in which people work together in organizations has changed. Today it is common to organize work in virtual teams where the team members can communicate and collaborate without regard to time and place using digital communication tools. A crucial aspect for virtual teams is communication. On account of the fact that a large part of communication takes place via digital communication tools rather than face-to-face, virtual teams face challenges regarding communication. This study examines, through a qualitative case study, what aspects of communication are affected when communication largely takes place via digital communication tools rather than face-to-face in virtual teams. This is examined in connection to the need of communication in virtual teams, in what way the digital communication tools support communication as well as what social aspects are central to the communication in virtual teams. Four interviews were conducted with four different people working in two different virtual teams within an IT-company. We have reached the conclusion that the need for communication in virtual teams is affected by the frequency, quality and flexibility of the communication. The properties of the digital communication tools support communication in different ways as well as the way in which they are used. Prior research advocates using a combination of tools, but this notion may be challenged due to the constant development of technology. Furthermore, human and social aspects also affect communication and virtual teams must therefore manage aspects such as informal communication and trust.

Abstract:
This study ́ s main purpose is to examine how digital tools can help students with dyslexia in science education. The two questions this study aims to answer are: (I) During what elements of science education do the students feel that they need digital tools? (II) What opportunities and obstacles do students see with digital tools in the science education? This survey used a qualitative method, where students diagnosed with dyslexia were observed and interviewed during a normal school week. The data was analyzed using socio-cultural theories on speaking, learning and writing. The results from the interviews showed that the majority of the students felt the need for digital tools in science education when they were doing independent work or group assignments like laboratory work. The students find obstacles like social media small in comparison to what they learn from using the digital tools. All of the students see the digital tools as motivational tools. For further studies, it would be interesting to measure students' results before and after using digital tools for a period in science class including control groups with dyslexic students and non dyslexic students who did not have access to digital tools, to see if there is any difference between their results. Another aspect that would be relevant, is to test and evaluate what apps are available in science education for students with dyslexia, to work on concepts. These results could then be shared with other schools science educators.

Abstract:
Materialet samlas in genom intervjuer.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes and presents a new type of interactive visualization for communicating about evolutionary biology, the dynamic evolutionary map. This web-based tool utilizes a novel map-based metaphor to visualize evolution, rather than the traditional “tree of life.” The dissertation begins with an analysis of the conceptual affordances of the traditional tree of life as the dominant metaphor for evolution. Next, theories from digital media, visualization, and cognitive science research are synthesized to support the assertion that digital media tools can extend the types of visual metaphors we use in science communication in order to overcome conceptual limitations of traditional metaphors. These theories are then applied to a specific problem of science communication, resulting in the dynamic evolutionary map. Metaphor is a crucial part of scientific communication, and metaphor-based scientific visualizations, models, and analogies play a profound role in shaping our ideas about the world around us. Users of the dynamic evolutionary map interact with evolution in two ways: by observing the diversification of bird orders over time and by examining the evidence for avian evolution at several places in evolutionary history. By combining these two types of interaction with a non-traditional map metaphor, evolution is framed in a novel way that supplements traditional metaphors for communicating about evolution. This reframing in turn suggests new conceptual affordances to users who are learning about evolution. Empirical testing of the dynamic evolutionary map by biology novices suggests that this approach is successful in communicating evolution differently than in existing tree-based visualization methods. Results of evaluation of the map by biology experts suggest possibilities for future enhancement and testing of this visualization that would help refine these successes. This dissertation represents an important step forward in the synthesis of scientific, design, and metaphor theory, as applied to a specific problem of science communication. The dynamic evolutionary map demonstrates that these theories can be used to guide the construction of a visualization for communicating a scientific concept in a way that is both novel and grounded in theory. There are several potential applications in the fields of informal science education, formal education, and evolutionary biology for the visualization created in this dissertation. Moreover, the approach suggested in this dissertation can potentially be extended into other areas of science and science communication. By placing birds onto the dynamic evolutionary map, this dissertation points to a way forward for visualizing science communication in the future.

Abstract:
This study examines how democratic organization of operations within Swedish non-profit organizations (NPO) has been affected because of rapid digitalization following covid-19. The study is inductive in nature and aims to study the prerequisites regarding democratic participation during annual meetings. The empirical data that creates the foundation for this research is based on qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey. The selection group studied comprises persons that have acted as chairman during both digital and physical annual meetings, as well as board members and employees within NPO's that have arranged or participated in annual meetings during covid-19. The study shows that there is a correlation between democratic prerequisites during digital annual meetings and the digital competence within the organization. Furthermore, preparations are shown to be more important regarding the democratic prerequisites than whether the annual meeting is conducted via physical or digital platforms. The results indicate that knowledge gained from the digitization of annual meetings during covid-19 could lead to better possibilities regarding participation and equal influence. Empirical data points out a possible future development where the organizations participating in the study will revert to using physical and hybrid meetings when conducting annual meetings. Hybrid meetings, where some participate physically and others digitally, are not to be recommended due to problems regarding equal participation and influence during the annual meeting.

Background: The construction industry is a complex workplace, constant changes take place, and conditions can change quickly. The construction workers are at higher risk than many other businesses that suffer an accident or illness at work because of an increased risk for e.g. the use of machines or fall from height. In every workplace there should be conducted a prevention against risks through a systematic program of safety inspection. Companies in the construction sector have identified a need to streamline the systematic work which now Build Safe AB while addressing and created a digital tool Build Safe to streamline security. The study is part of a research project at KTH, where the aim was to evaluate the digital tool Build Safe in the construction industry. Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate and describe the work on safety inspection in the construction industry and identifying success factors and challenges to achieve the quality and efficiency of the safety inspection work. Limitations: The author deals with safety inspection work in the construction industry confined to Sweden, the study does not address safety inspection work in other countries. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative design with inductive approach. It conducted a participant observation, group interviews and four telephone interviews. A semi-structured interview guide was used in all interviews. All participation was voluntary, and all the collected data was anonymised. Results: The results showed that the identified key success factors that created the prerequisite for a well-functioning safety inspection work in the construction industry was the involvement and commitment of the company on safety inspection work. By using a digital tool better opportunities for a successful safety inspection work was also created, and with good planning and good communication before and after the safety inspection tour created the conditions for a good work environment.

Abstract:
The interest in public participation is increasing and many municipalities express a wish to expand and improve their dialogue with the citizens. It is important to involve the citizens at an early stage in the planning process to increase the influence and improve the public participation. Studies have shown that the plans in which the public is involved at an early stage in the planning process are more likely to pass without any objections. This study is primarily focused on Swedish municipalities and professionals in urban planning. The main purpose of the study is to systematically investigate methods and tools that Swedish municipalities use to communicate with the public. To find out what methods are used and how they work s questionnaire has been sent out to 62 municipalities of different size and geographical location. Four additional semi-structured interviews were conducted with three different municipalities. The result showed that Swedish municipalities mostly use different dialogue meetings communicate with the public. However, they express a wish to use more digital methods if they had the resources to do so. Many municipalities expressed dissatisfaction over how the public hearings and larger meetings work while it is on the contrary the most common methods of communication with the public. In order to improve public participation it is important to involve and invite the public to communicate at an early stage in the planning process and to use methods that will appeal to a wider audience.

Abstract:
This research was conducted to investigate the Saudi science teachers' perception of the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to enhance teaching and learning and undertake a small and groundwork examination of these teachers current use of ICT. It draws on the interpretive paradigm (Cohen Manion, 1994), where the focus is on how people interpret and make sense of their world. From this interpretive perspective the beliefs of Saudi secondary school science teachers, in relation to the benefits of ICT, their current use of ICT and their perceived needs for improvement in the use of ICT in the classroom were investigated. Saudi secondary schools science teachers from both girls' and boys' schools in three different types of schools have been involved in this study. There were 28 government schools (9 girls' and 19 boys' schools), four small schools in rented premises (2 girls' and 2 boys' schools) and four Aramco schools (1 girls' and 3 boys' schools). These schools were in different districts: Aldammam city, Alkhobar city, Aldahran city, Alqateaf city and Sufwa city. The teachers were asked to voluntarily participate in the study and 131 teachers out of 200 (86 male and 45 female, 65 %) completed the questionnaire. Analysis of the data, together with the relevant literature builds a picture of the use of ICT in science education. Providing ICT hardware and software resources to a school is not enough to ensure significant developments in use of ICT for teaching and learning in Saudi science classrooms. Access to working ICT continues to be an issue for these teachers. Although teachers identified many benefits to teachers and students from using ICT and had made individual efforts to develop their use of ICT for admin planning and lesson preparation, they also identified barriers. These barriers focused on a lack of appropriate professional development and technical support. The findings have implications for future development in the area of ICT. It is expected that the results of the research will guide future research and development in the country and outline the importance of the use of information and communication technology in education for teachers, students, parents and decision-makers. It will contribute information towards decision-making and planning in future projects.

Abstract:
There is a digital transformation that is currently occurring in today’s workplace to create a more agile, productive and smart workplace (Ulukan, 2020). The occurrence of the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this transformation as employees were forced to shift to working remotely (Schwarz et al., 2020). This shift has revealed a wide range of positive and negative effects on individuals and organizations. Thus, exploring how to integrate remote work properly is paramount for organizations when creating a smart workplace. Change Management includes models that can handle change by considering the two aspects of: the individual and the organizational (Prosci, 2020). Therefore, this thesis explores how organizations can use change management to address the demands arising with the integration of remote work by conducting a qualitative case study in collaboration with a company in the TMT (Technology, Media, Telecommunication) industry. The findings of this thesis demonstrate that a complete shift to remote work will not be sustainable in the long term due to the lack of social interactions which is considered to be essential according to the empirics provided in this thesis. Also, the findings show that organizations will need to provide more flexibility for varying between remote work and in-office work for the employees in the future. Moreover, managers will need to include workers more in the planning process and be more transparent towards their teams about the changes that will be required to create a smart workplace. Also, managers will need to listen to their teams' expectations on how they want to balance remote work and being at the office.

Abstract:
This study has explored a recruitment company and its recruitment process. The aim of the study is to develop an understanding about how the recruitment company’s employees experience benefits and drawbacks of the changes done in the recruitment process due to the telework adapted because of the Covid-19 outbreak. A qualitative research method has been used and seven semi structured interviews have been conducted. The study adapted a hermeneutic interpretation process and the collected empirical material was analysed using a thematic analysis method. The respondents were involved in the recruitment process, and they had also worked within the organisation both before and during the pandemic. The result indicated that the area most affected by the telework in the recruitment process was the contact and the communication with the clients. The result also showed that the contact and communication between the candidates as well as the colleagues had changed to some extent. However, no changes have been made in the organisation’s recruitment tools. The experiences of the changes amongst the respondents have varied, but they have overall been positive.

Abstract:
The covid-19 pandemic led to large parts of the world's education system being forced to switch to distance education. This study examines opportunities that digital tools contribute  to solving challenges with students learning, as mathematics education is transitioned to distance learning. Six semi-structured video interviews were conducted with mathematics teachers from upper secondary schools around Sweden. The categories identified on the basis of the interviews were Student motivation and mathematics performance, Assessment and Communication. Several students' motivation was disadvantaged by the physical distance, but some were favored by the situation. A fair assessment was considered impossible to carry out and synchronous communication decreased as students withdrew to ask for help. However, digital tools allow for higher attendance, formative assessment and increased asynchronous distance communication. The discussion highlights the opportunities with digital tools that this study contributes to and that teachers 'experiences of students are confirmed by previous research on students' experiences in distance education.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate sfi-teachers’ experiences of distance education in the spring of 2020. The study focuses on examining how digital tools were adapted to students’ differences, how communication with students was established and what teaching methods characterized sfi teachers’ distance education. By describing the transition to distance education caused by pandemics such as SARS and Covid-19, the challenges and opportunities that teachers face in the digital classroom environment are described. Thereafter, theoretical aspects of communication and the teacher’s role in creating relationships with students in the digital learning environment are highlighted. In order to understand the phenomenon of distance education in its entirety, further points of departure are presented that should be taken into account when such education is designed. This is an empirical study where method triangulation with both quantitative and qualitative studies. A total of 126 respondents responded to the online survey and six respondents participated in semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that the teachers’ approach to distance education during the pandemic, and the inequality in students’ digital competence and the students’ inadequate access to digital technology in connection with the transition, were decisive for how new teaching methods and teaching strategies were formed. Sfi teachers used the digital tools and digital resources that were already incorporated in the classroom education. Both synchronous and asynchronous communication were applied to a large extent, where synchronous communication was valued thanks to its similarity to the physical classroom layout and asynchronous communication because of the increased accessibility to teaching materials. The sfi teachers’ teaching challenges consisted of difficulties in being available to the students who needed support and in following up the students’ learning processes at a distance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about students’ perspectives on the use of digital tools in social interactions, education and everyday life. In order to examine this area, students in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities have been interviewed. The interest for this subject arose when I during my work in special school sometimes experienced a lack of knowledge, regarding digital tools, on how to support the students fully in their education. Previous research shows positive results for students with intellectual disabilities regarding use of digitals tools during education. There are also studies that show that using digital tools can contribute to increase the independence and connection to the society for these people. This study is based on a sociocultural perspective, where education and personal growth is developed by interaction between people. In order to collect empirical data, a qualitative semi-structured interview method was selected. The results indicate that the students are using common functions in both smart phones and computers in a variety of contexts. According to the students, the digital tools are necessary for their education as well as their participation in all parts of the society. The study did not result in any features or applications used specifically for educating students in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities. The students expressed that they learned to use the tools by themselves or from friends. They also stated that they themselves found appropriate strategies and area of use for the tools that compensate for different disabilities or other difficulties both inside and outside the school. Regarding future research in this area one suitable approach could be to use the special education teacher’s perspective as a main source and explore the possibilities to further develop the digital tools the students already are familiar with, towards a better education.

Abstract:
Despite the importance of hair for characters in games, the process for creating realistic looking real-time hair is a highly difficult task that can only be performed by a few artists. As the industry is growing so does expectations of games graphics and the need for higher fidelity hairstyles. This paper sets out to explain current modeling techniques for hairstyling, and presents an alternate way for styling haircard models using curve deformers. Our Blende radd-on, based on this method is then previewed by industry professionals to evaluate their perception of the method’s effectiveness based on “control”, “time” and “preference”. Our conclusion is that per wisp curve based controls are easily learnt, relatively quick to use and gives adequate control over each haircard. The method therefore shows promise instream lining artists’ production pipelines. This test serves as a pilot for further exploration of curve based tools for production of real-time hair.

Abstract:

Abstract:
On a daily basis, students encounter multimodal texts both at school and at leisure. Digitization has led to a change in how texts are read and produced. In addition, digitization contributes to both opportunities and difficulties for both teachers and pupils. The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers and students work with multimodal narrative texts in the Swedish subject in grades 1—3 and what opportunities and difficulties exist in the work. Teachers´ and pupils' opinion on the work with multimodal narrative texts will also be compared with each other.  The study is based on a sociocultural perspective which considers the multimodal narratives as constructs in a social context. To collect material to my study I use the method interview, the teachers are personally interviewed and the students are interviewed in groups. The results of the study showes that writing and image are the most common modalities. The grades work in slightly different ways, but all teachers use pictures to support students' understanding. Digital tools are used extensively in Swedish teaching, projectors are used in reviews and reports, computers are used as search engines and to produce text on, and iPads are used in the same way as the computer but also to record audio and film. Teachers plan what students should do while students plan what they want to write about. But it's not always easy to figure out what to write about. The teachers feel that many students have a lack of imagination which the students themselves notice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was toexplore organizational culture in a digital context, so that a greater understanding of the relations between the two subjects could be developed. The interest for the subject came from reflections and observations obtained during a prior internship at a small organization using the digital collaboration platform Slack in their daily work. To answer the purpose of the study, one main research question; ‘What is the relationship between organizational culture and a digital communication platform as Slack?’ and two sub questions; ‘How is Slack used to solve problems with internal integration? and ‘How is Slack used to solve problems with external adaption?’ was formulated. The two sub questions came from an operationalization of Schein’s (2010, p.18) well used definition of organizational culture. By using the qualitative method netnography to study the behaviors and interactions of the members of a small organization through participating observations, in combination with the field notes and observations from the prior internship, the research questions were successfully answered. The results showed that Slack was used as a tool to maintain structure and order during problems with external adaption in form of a re-organization creating an unsecure time-period. Decrement in activity also showed that the usage of Slack was limited in time and easily could be exchanged, but that appreciated cultural rites and behaviors created from using it could live on outside of Slack. Results also showed that Slack successfully functioned as a tool to solve problems with internal integration. By allowing new members to efficiently come in contact with both the formal and informal cultural elements, the very essence of culture as in underlying assumptions was quickly taught. The efficiency of using Slack for internal integration was also shown to rely on a new possible problem in form of a disintegration between the private and work. The answer to the main research question was that Slack is an artifact, inhabiting other artifact, living in symbiosis with the organization. Even though Slack could help an organization to cope with problems of external adaption and internal integration, Slack on its own did not serve as a one single place for understanding and becoming a part of an organization and its culture, as the organization and culture still will live and develop outside of the digital medium.

Abstract:
For over a century, mankind has been dreaming about technologies that combined reality with the wonders of the virtual world. Nowadays, Augmented Reality (AR) is doing just that, and with an emergence of AR in many new fields, there is reason to believe that it will be a widely used communication tool in the future. However, it is important to know what the benefits and disadvantages of AR is, not just from a user perspective, but also from a developer perspective. Therefore, a literature study on human communication and AR was performed in this thesis, along with the development of a mobile AR application, and also two surveys inquiring about the attitudes regarding AR present in people in the communications industry. The literature study showed that AR can help people process information by increasing the visualization aspect, and that it is a durable technology to the changes that languages go through. There is, however, a risk that AR can be an excluding technology, especially for older people, and the application development process also showed that there are compatibility issues to consider before developing.

Abstract:
The use and incorporation of ICT in the knowledge society is increasingly widespread. Technology can play an important role in the value of the assets of the 21st century heritage. In the case of museums the need to diversify the existing supply is becoming clear due to the visitors’ increasing demand of tools for interpretation and interaction with the heritage. The purpose of museums in regard to integration of ICT can vary, influenced by the size of museums, the kind of technology used, as well as the use of ICT by visitors.. This research focuses on the use of the ICT made by the museums in Andorra, willing to analyze the adaptation to new technologies and the role played by ICT resources to find out which would be the main benefits resulting from the introduction of technologies in museums. The research focuses on the following specific goals: (1) identification of determing factors in the implementation of an ICT project in a museum; (2) analysis of museums in Andorra; (3) diagnose the ICT implementation degree of museums in Andorra and (4) determine the digital strategy at the andorran museums. We propose a qualitative methodology using tools such as questionnaires. The results will allow us to conclude how museum managers apply their knowledge of museums’ discipline in incorporating ICT and see how far and in which way museums can use the incorporation of ICT to improve strategic planning in museums.

Abstract:
The ever-present smart mobile device has changed the everyday life of users in both positive and negative ways, and connects users’ lives online and offline. The existence of fewer gaps between online and offline worlds has shaped a new form of social relationship, new ways of thinking, and had sparked changes in smart mobile users’ behaviour. This thesis investigates the problem of digital anxiety among smart mobile users. The aim of this research project is to investigate how digital drawing affects digital anxiety in the smart mobile user. The research is based on the premise that drawing is a communication tool, and it investigates what types of digital drawing content help the smart mobile user relieve their digital anxiety. This research proposes guidelines for the use of drawing to help the smart mobile user who is experiencing digital anxiety. First, I established digital anxiety as a theoretical construct, and then conducted exploratory studies to investigate the practical problems faced by the smart mobile user. I determined the meaning of digital anxiety, and the precise symptoms experienced by the user suffering from digital anxiety, through a theoretical framework and an exploratory study. Lastly, I conducted empirical studies aimed at designing a method of measuring the level of digital anxiety. This method was tested with hundreds of participants, and was used for conducting the digital drawing experiment at the end of my research project. Overall, this thesis establishes the scope for determining digital anxiety, provides a method of quantifying digital anxiety, and demonstrates the use of digital drawing to relieve digital anxiety in the smart mobile user. I conclude that my research investigates the use of drawing as a communication tool for smart mobile users as a way of improving their memory, emotional wellbeing, and social relationships. I hope my research can serve as a guideline or a methodology in the design of an educational programme or high-tech industries on the basis of a cognition-mediated model.

Abstract:
In acoustic instruments, physical properties of the instrument determine both the gestures that can be performed on it and the sound produced by it. This is not the case with digital musical instruments (DMIs) that consist of three distinct parts: the playable interface, the sound generating component, and the mapping between them. The implication is that mapping from sensors to sound is an integral part in the design of a DMI, and a process highly influential on how the instrument is played and sounds. Creating mappings in a DMI is a non-trivial task, and typically a lot of different mappings are explored throughout the stages of prototyping, composition, and production. Furthermore, production environments involving DMIs will typically bring together engineers, composers, and performers in valuable and often short meeting times, requiring configuration and visualization of the mapping layer to be quick and simple, catering to both technical and nontechnical participants. This thesis presents two software components developed at the Input Devices and Music Interaction Laboratory to aid in the mapping process: libmapper, a software library enabling connections to be made between data signals declared on a shared network, and Webmapper, a list-based graphical user interface to libmapper. An extension to Webmapper was created to address the following two concerns: to provide alternate interfaces for configuring mappings, and to provide an alternate visualizations of the mapping layer. Two new interfaces were created to investigate the tasks: a grid inspired view and a hive plot inspired view. The system was developed using HTML5 compliant technologies, and a framework architecture inspired by the model-view-controller paradigm was added to Webmapper for code modularity and maintainability. Advantages and disadvantages of the three different interfaces from Webmapper and its new extension are discussed in regards to their ability to act both as a software user interface and a data visualization tool. The contribution of the work is the demonstration of benefits to alternate methods for configuring and visualizing the mapping layer in DMIs, and the laying of a foundation for future investigations using the created HTML5 compliant software.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine pre-school teachers' experiences of how and for what purpose children at preschool Ljusstaden in Kalmar, use the tablet. The study also examined the teachers' views on the tool in that context. From a media and communication research perspective, the purpose with this study was to increase greater knowledge and understanding of children's use of the tablet in preschool in Kalmar. I chose to performe a qualitative study by conducting semistructured interviews with seven pre-school teachers at the preschool, Ljusstaden in Kalmar. The results of this study showed that it was common for the children to use the tablet in the preschool to take pictures and film and watch it afterwards and that the usage-time varied. I found that the teachers felt that the primary purpose was to follow the digital development and prepare the children for the future. I also discovered that the teachers wanted the children to continue using the tablet in the preschool Ljusstaden. In the future, the teachers wanted more education about how children can use the tablet in the best possible way.

Abstract:
Comics is a writing style that is often written off as just something done for entertainment or design. However, there are many facets of comics that make it a suitable candidate for technical documentation. By nature, comics is a visual and universal language and, as such, is the basis for an investigation of comics within the scope of technical communication. This research investigates whether comics can be automatically generated, based on a set of predefined panel templates, for such purposes while also providing for flexibility in both content and ultimate consumption format. A within-subjects study run with over 200 participants compared comics to two of its traditional documentation style contenders, prose and step-oriented, in terms of understanding and evaluation metrics, including those related to user experience. Results indicate that comics as a documentation style can offer enhanced, more positive user experiences, albeit not being overall better than the other styles.

Abstract:
This is an interdiscliplinary qualitative study which uses an exploratory research design and builds on Fariclough's Critical Discourse Analysis methodology to analyze the discourses surrounding an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for livelihood development project in Jamaica, introduced by the United Nations Development Programme - the Jamaica Sustainable Development Networking Programme (JSDNP). The primary objective of this project is to provide the poor in Jamaican communities with access to, and training in ICTs. In this research, I specifically focus on the discourses surrounding the JSDNP Cybercentre Project for a group of microenterprise entrepreneurs in the Jamaican tourism industry to access the epistemological assumptions of this project. From the data collected it was found that at one level, the JSDNP Cybercentre Project encouraged specific ways of acting and organizing congruent with the configurations, processes and structures of corporate firms of industrialized countries, by representing the achievement of livelihood expansion through the use of specific ICTs in a particular way which excluded other discourses. The particular ways of acting and organizing promoted by the Cybercentre encouraged the use of non-indigenous technologies, undervalued indigenous technologies and excluded the indigenization of non-indigenous technologies. These discourses were incompatible with the operational and structural configurations of trans-temporal poor entrepretrepreneurs interviewed and were more favourable to the non-poor and spatio-temporal ones. One of the wider implications of the discourse therefore was that they play a fundamental role in perpetuating entrenched inequalities through the preservation of social practices, along with their associated systems and structures. It was also found that these modalities limited the operational processes of all microenterprise entrepreneurs who were exposed to the Cybercentre Project. These entrepreneurs have limited control over the configuration of non-indigenous technologies; their technological and creative capabilities are restricted; their ability to indigenize non-indigenous technologies impaired; and they are highly dependent on non-indigenous technologies (which themselves have a number of limitations).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore patients’ experiences and preferences concerning communication with primary care, as well as their attitude towards a future digital system to manage communication. The Swedish county councils and municipalities (SKL) is developing a new digital tool as a complement in the communication between patients and physicians, thus this research is a preliminary investigation of a larger approach. The research has been based on 20 semi-structured interviews with patients in ages between 21 and 86 from 13 different health care centers in Sweden. The interviews indicate that the communication between patients and physicians needs development in numerous ways and that the system used by the primary care contributes to negative outcomes in the communication. Patients’ attitudes towards a new digital system to manage communication were investigated and a majority was positive. The study’s results pointed out the importance of the physicians’ attitudes in the physician-patient communication, and brought some possible improvements to be done in the actual primary care system; as for example implementing new communication channels to allow an easier contact of patients with their health care center. The new communication tool was overall well received and even appeared to be a suitable solution for some of the problems discovered along the patients’ journey. The overall results obtained are positive and promising towards its implementation in Sweden.

Abstract:
There is a well-known expression that reads: “Communication is key”. That applies to our everyday life, work, relationships and more. Communication helps to make sure everyone is informed, and by doing so, avoiding misunderstandings. Effective and valuable internal communication is also a success factor and an essential part of an organizations’ structure. This study aimed to help staff at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Örnsköldsvik hospital. This paper presents results from a study performed, with the objective to investigate how a digital dashboard should be designed to make management and responsible specialist feel confident that they reach out to all team members and also receives communicated information in a hospital environment. This was done by conducting a user-centered design process to analyze, design and implement a digital dashboard that later on was used in a final study including a test period and evaluation. For a period of 2 weeks, the implemented digital dashboard was tested at the ICU in a hospital. After that period, the dashboard was evaluated by the staff members using a questionnaire, and an interview with the responsible administrator of content. The result suggest that the management and responsible specialist felt that the digital dashboard makes them reach out to all other team members better, compared to their current communication channels. In addition, the vast majority of team members felt that they receive communicated information better. By using a digital dashboard as an internal communication platform, information exchange within the staff at the ICU was improved.

Abstract:
Due to the pandemic, along with the growth of current technology, working remotely is becoming more feasible. As a result digital nomadism has become a viable alternative as a career. The emerging literature on digital nomadism focuses mainly on lifestyle descriptions, with less attention given to potentially understand digital nomads and their needs (Wang et al. 2018). In this research the author will apply uses and gratification theory to describe the gratifications that motivates digital nomads and their means of communication combined with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to determine if the needs of digital nomads have changed during the course of the pandemic. The aim of this thesis is to provide terminological and philosophical insights on the idea of digital nomads and their future.   Since the start of the pandemic the discussions whether remote work is the future has been fluctuating to say the least. Big companies have introduced a “work from anywhere” model meaning that their employees will have the possibility to choose if they want to be remote after the pandemic (CNBC, 2021). Prior to this, digital nomads were already fully remote. This could be the ideal time and subject to study to gain further understanding if the digital nomad phenomenon has changed. Moreover, if there has been an increase or decrease in interest regarding a remote future while aiming to understand the future remote workforce.

Abstract:
Search and retrieval of multimedia content from open platforms such as the Internet and IPTV platforms has long been found to be hugely inefficient. It has been noted that a major cause of such inefficient results is the improper labeling or incomplete description of multimedia content by its creators. The lack of adequate description of video content by the proper annotation of video content with the relevant metadata leads to poor search and retrieval yields. The creation of such metadata itself is a major problem as there are various metadata description standards which users could employ. On the other hand there are tools such as FFprobe that can retrieve important features of video that can be used in searching and retrieval. The combination of such tools and metadata description standards could be the solution to the metadata problem. The Multimedia Content Description Interface (MPEG-7) is an example of a metadata description standard. It has been adopted by TISPAN for the description of IPTV multimedia content. The MPEG-7 standard is rather complex, seeing as it has over 1200 global Descriptors and Description Schemes which a user would have to know in order to implement such technology. This complexity is a nuisance when we consider the existence of multitudes of amateur video producers. These multimedia content creators have no idea how to use the MPEG-7 standard to annotate their creations with metadata. Consequently, overloading of the IPTV platform with content that has not been annotated in a standardized manner occurs, making search and retrieval of the multimedia content (videos, in this instance) inefficient. Therefore, it was imperative to try and determine whether the use of the MPEG-7 standard could be made much easier by creating a tool that is MPEG-7 enabled which will allow for the annotation of video content by any user without concerning themselves about how to use the MPEG-7 standard. In attempting to develop a tool for metadata generation, it was incumbent for us to understand the issues associated with metadata generation for users wishing to create IPTV services. An extensive literature review on IPTV standardization was carried out to determine the issues associated with metadata generation for IPTV and their proposed solutions. An experimental research approach was taken in an attempt to figure out if our proposed solution to the lack of technical expertise by users about the MPEG-7 standard could be the final solution to the metadata generation problem. We developed a Multimedia Content Description and Management System (MCDMS) prototype which enabled us to describe video content by annotating it with 16 different metadata elements and storing the descriptions in XML MPEG-7 format. Incremental development and re-use oriented development were used during the development phase of this research. The MCDMS underwent functional testing; smoke testing of the individual system components and Big Bang integration testing for the combined components. Our results indicate that the more metadata is appended to a video as description the better it is to search for and retrieve. The MCDMS hides the complexity of MPEG-7 metadata creation from the users. With the effortless creation of MPEG-7 based metadata, it becomes easier to annotate videos. Consequently, search and retrieval of video content becomes more efficient. It is important to note that the description of multimedia content remains a complex feat. Even with the metadata elements laid out for users, there still exist other issues that affect metadata creation such as polysemy and the semantic gap. However, the provision of a tool that does the MPEG-7 standardizing behind the scenes for users when they upload a video makes the description of multimedia content in a standardized manner a much easier feat to achieve.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to explore why and how B2B-companies use podcasts as a marketing tool and evaluate how it canfunction together with other marketing strategies. Problematization Digital content marketing is an increasingly popular marketingstrategy within B2B. There is however a large content saturationonline, this puts pressure on organizations having to increase theirmarketing creativity and finding alternative means to stand outfrom the crowd while at the same time staying within theirmarketing budget. Podcast marketing is a form of content marketingbeing fairly untapped territory and with little research dedicatedtowards it, however being the fastest growing medium it is of highinterest to better understand its marketing potential and how toutilize it. Methodology A qualitative case study with an iterative approach. The empiricalfindings derive from semi structured interviews with five selectedcase companies and a podcast producer. Conclusion Why B2B companies use podcasting as a marketing tool variessomewhat, the five main reasons identified are cost and timeefficiency, active listening, building relationships, branding andemployer branding. Some view podcasting in a strategic sense first, while others seem to use podcasting just as much for their ownenjoyment as they do for strategic purposes. There are challenges inregard to measuring success. However, those challenges do notappear to be very problematic as costs are low. Reaching the rightpeople is more important than reaching the masses. Contribution This study adds to existing research within the field of B2B content marketing by exploring podcasts as a marketing tool.

Abstract:
The integration of digital technologies in K-12 education is ubiquitous. Web 2.0 technologies enable students who were once passive consumers to become active participants in, and even creators of, dynamic digital experiences. Social media, in particular, can connect disparate populations, minimizing traditional barriers such as time, space and geography. Similarly, science communication has also been influenced by an expanding array of media through which scientists can now connect directly with the public. #Scistuchat, the focus of this study, uses the social media platform Twitter to bring together scientists, secondary science students and teachers outside of school in monthly, science-focused Twitter chats. Using a multiple-case (embedded) design, this study sought to answer the question "How do #scistuchat participants perceive Twitter as a tool for learning and communicating science?" Thematic, cross-case analysis of four #scistuchats revealed themes specific to the #scistuchat experience, as well as the broader use of Twitter for science learning and communication. In addition to real-time observations of each chat and later analysis of the archived tweets, videoconferencing technology was used to conduct individual interviews with participating scientists (n=16) and teachers (n=6), as well as focus groups with students (n=17). Notable #scistuchat-specific findings include a recognition of the experience as dynamic and student-focused. Regarding student outcomes, although gains in science content knowledge were limited, an evolving understanding of scientists and the nature of their work was prominent. Findings regarding the broader use of Twitter for science purposes highlighted its multidimensional, professional utility and its unique contributions when leveraged in classroom settings.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to describe the thoughts of a number of teachers regarding how a social robot could be helpful in school situations for children who have long-term school absenteeism (remote students). There is no current research in this area, thus this investigation focus on how the social robot works for students with high absence due to illness instead.Four interviews were conducted with teachers with experience working with the social robot AV1. The starting point in the interviews was to capture how the teachers think the social robots could be an alternative to facilitate the return to school for remote students. Also the teachers´ experience on how a social robot could be used for students with problems such as social phobia or autism was discussed. The interviews were analysed from a socio-cultural perspective with assistance from coding and thematization from the content in the transcribed interviews.Based on the interviews, no distinct conclusion could be drawn regarding the success of a social robot in promoting the return to school of remote students. However, we have found examples in one interview which supported the use of the social robot, and were able to note the possibilities and obstacles according to the respondents. All the respondents have expressed themselves in a positive way about using social robots in the classroom. However, all were not as positive regarding the use of social robots to attempt to get children who have long-term school absenteeism back to school. In the final part of the thesis the amplifications of the results are discussed and what new questions that have arisen. The concept of social robots is a rather new phenomenon in the school environment and our work has demonstrated that there are many new areas to research to find out what new possibilities the social robots can offer. This is a new world with tools and methods that are novel, but which can be beneficial to education. Rather than being intimidated by innovative technology instruments, we must embrace their possibilities for enhancing student learning.
