The memory changes associated with age are attributed to the deterioration of the frontal lobes, as well as to the middle temporal structures. Therefore, in addition to a decline in memory for facts and events, as found impaired in amnesics, a memory decline associated with age is predicted for tasks typically found impaired in frontal lobe patients (i.e., temporal order judgment). There are conflicting findings concerning whether indirect measures of memory for facts and events are associated with age. First-order linear temporal logic (FOLTL) is a flexible and expressive formalism capable of naturally describing complex behaviors and properties. Although the logic is in general highly undecidable, the idea of using it as a specification language for the verification of complex infinite-state systems is appealing. However, a missing piece, which has proved to be an invaluable tool in dealing with other temporal logics, is an automaton model capable of capturing the logic. In this paper we address this issue, by defining and studying such a model, which we call first-order automaton. We defin

Language and culture are inseparable from each other and words are the direct representation of culture. In both English and Chinese, there are a great many animal words which carry unique cultural connotations in each culture. Through the comparison on the cultural connotations of animal words in both languages, it is found that the same word may have divergent connotations and different words also can carry similar implications. The findings imply that it is necessary to better understand these cultural connotations in order to conduct a successful cross-cultural communication.

The vocabulary size literature currently provides a rather pessimistic view of the role for direct instruction in increasing vocabulary size. A major reason for this pessimism revolves around estimates of the total number of words that individuals know and, hence, the number of words that would have to be taught in order to affect significantly normal vocabulary growth. When vocabulary size is expressed in terms of the number of functionally important words in the lexicon, however, estimates of vocabulary size are dramatically reduced. Abstract:
As an important task in sentiment analysis, joint multimodal aspect sentiment analysis (JMASA) has received increasing attention in recent years. However, previous approaches either i) directly fuse multimodal data without fully exploiting the correlation between multimodal input data, or ii) equally utilize the dependencies of words in the text for sentiment analysis, ignoring the differences in the importance of different words. To address these limitations, we propose a joint multimodal sentiment analysis method based on Aspect Enhancement and Syntactic Adaptive Learning (AESAL). Specifical

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are two major groups of PFAS will be subjected to the Maximal Contamination Concentration (MCL) of 4 ng/l in drinking water to be implemented by the U.S. EPA by 2025. How to accurately predict toxicity of PFAS with varied carbon chain length is important for treatment and sequential removal from drinking water. This study presents Quantitative Structure and Activity Relationship (QSAR) models developed through both linear regression and two order regression. Log P is compiled from reference and carbon content is counted as

Abstract:
The article analyzes memes as a form of visual communication in war conditions, on the example of memes with Oleksii Arestovych and Valerii Zaluzhnyi, during the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine. Two forms of this method of communication have been described: direct communication and the method of narration. In the case of direct communication, memes are a communication tool of the hero of these memes, in the second, the way of narrating events. Key words: memes, war, Ukraine, visual communication, social media, Arestovych, Zaluzhnyi.

Abstract:
The Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning (CEDIL) develops and tests innovative methods for evaluation and evidence synthesis. Claims made in CEDIL studies are intended to inform socio-economic development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), or research about LMICs. This paper provides an overview of how, in CEDIL-funded studies, claims arising from research (termed ‘evidence claims’ for brevity) have been justified and communicated in order to inform policy decisions relating to socio-economic development. This study addresses two important questions about research

Full text
Abstract:
Abstraction Logic is introduced as a foundation for Practical Types and Practal. It combines the simplicity of first-order logic with direct support for variable binding constants called abstractions. It also allows free variables to depend on parameters, which means that first-order axiom schemata can be encoded as simple axioms. Conceptually abstraction logic is situated between first-order logic and second-order logic. It is sound and complete with respect to an intuitive and simple algebraic semantics.

Abstract:
In Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion, we are presented with a character in the midst of a crisis of identity. Maria, a failed actress in Hollywood, is beset by many of the problems commonly associated with a rising star in the industry. A reliance on drugs, a commodification of the self, and a deteriorating sense of who she is all play into her downward spiral. Yet when we examine the reason that Maria lacks an actualized sense of self, the reader is presented with a paradox. If we take the words of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan to be true, then language serves to create a filter through

Abstract:
The words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu make the simplest, yet most profound, case for transformation – a change of direction, a fundamental shift in the nature or character of something, recasting the existing order and ways of doing things. This is what the world needs now, as institutions and systems of the past century prove unable to address the challenges of impending planetary disaster, persistent poverty, pandemics, rising fundamentalism and authoritarianism, wars, and everyday violence. Against a background of a worldwide backlash against women’s rights, gender parity in lead
