Abstract:
Fungal diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can occur because of an overgrowth of yeast in the gut, exposure to contaminated food and water, or as part of disseminated invasive fungal infections from other sites. Chapter 6 discusses the upper gastrointestinal tract, and addresses that the technical challenges of these diseases are considerable related to tumour volumes, anatomical situation, and poor normal tissue tolerance particularly of the intra-abdominal contents. More contemporaneous treatment techniques such as IMRT and IGRT have not currently made significant impact in the routine treatment of upper gastrointestinal tumours in the UK.
