Though it is not certain to what extent Gogol was familiar with Dante, it appears he may have regarded Dead Souls I (1842) as the first part of a tripartite scheme in light of La Divina Commedia. In the Commedia of Dante, a poem 14,233 lines in length, some 7,500 words occur only once. These are the hapax. Fewer than 2% of these constitute a minute but distinct subset—the hapax for which there are one or more words in the poem whose spelling is identical but whose meaning is different. These are what I call same-spelling hapax. I identify four categories: partof- speech, homograph, locus, and name. Cette thèse propose une étude de la notion de religio dans le De ira Dei de Lactance, un auteur chrétien du IVe siècle de notre ère. Lactance est très connu pour son étymologie de religio contenue dans ses Diuinae institutiones, mais son utilisation, dans le De ira Dei, n’a jamais soulevé beaucoup d’intérêt. Il s’agit pourtant d’une notion centrale dans ce traité rédigé après que le christianisme soit devenu une religion tolérée par les Romains. De fait, l’analyse rhétorique du texte montre que celui-ci comporte une propositio qui suggère qu’il ne peut y avoir de religio sans crainte de Dieu.

This study examines the importance of geographical ideas in Dante’s Commedia and develops a historically sensitive geocritical methodology to analyze the function of real world geography within Dante’s poem. I aim to expand our understanding of the importance of the poet’s use of geography beyond the consulation of geographical sources and consideration of place names. In the first chapter case studies of geographical references with connections to the Islamic world show how historicized approaches open up new possibilities of understanding the medieval significance of the poet’s references.
