The construction industry is fragmented due to the many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and phases involved in a construction project. This fact has led to well documented problems with project management and concretely communication and information processing.
What most SMEs require in terms of project management is the ability to manage and share the company's documents. This is achieved by removing certain core applications from individual PCs and running them on a server such as an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS). Such tools should centralise the information specific to the organisation in an easily accessible environment, allowing users to store, access and modify information quickly and easily.
On the other hand, large companies, often early adopters of IT, demand that SMEs that work with them adopt the same management systems. Currently, the most popular option used by larger companies for the project management is web based tools such as Web based Project Management Systems (WPMS) that are applications designed to store and manage project information. Quite simply project collaboration applications allow disparate groups of people such as engineers, architects and clients to control access and automate dissemination of information. The most WPMS used in the construction sector is to rent a completely developed WPMS from an Application Service Provider (ASP) for a usage fee. The development and operation of this option require a minimum of technical, financial and human resources.
The start point of the thesis is survey carried out in several SMEs in the construction sector in Spain in order to acquire a general idea of their working methodologies and the deficiencies on document management.
From the SMEs standpoint, the main challenge of WPMS still lies within the lack of a standardized document organization and the inefficiency of the information flow from different sources (Documents stored in their EDMS and those stored in the WPMS).
The suggested remedy for this inefficiency and the aim of this thesis is to create a tool to improve both internal and external document organization. This Life cycle Document Management System for Construction automatically creates a folder structure for each specific project to be download into each company's server and into the WPMS which is being used for the project management. This folder structure will be the same to the folder structure of the WPMS with the consequent improvement of document storage, interaction and exchange of information between all the actors working in the same construction project.
To do this, the flow of information between the different parties involved in a construction project is mapped out and a Concept Model for Information Flow is designed to store all the documentation of a construction project and its metadata throughout the life cycle of the project. Different approaches are analyzed to obtain the most accurate solution.
Moreover, when these actors are working with WPMS sharing documents all the stakeholders should have the same working standards. This thesis also provides a Guidelines for Document Management through WPMS to unify the different working processes of all the companies involved in the project. These guidelines are applicable to projects of varying complexity, size and duration. Document codification, organization of folders and documents, publication dates, documentation control, and so on, are some of the aspects that these guidelines are oriented to.
Finally, the system is submitted for criticism and evaluation by several academics with the aim to verify its contents and consistency. A survey is also carried out in 30 SMEs out of a variety of project types, sizes, values, and Project Management utilized to validate the system.
The system will serve as a demonstration for all the participants in a construction project that a good document management is basic for the fulfilment of the project objectives.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The past decade has seen a huge increase in the implementation and use of Electronic document and records management systems (EDRMS) in many public spheres. The South African government, in this case the Presidency, has now also adopted this system to comply with current legislation requiring government institutions to replace paper with electronic media as the preferred way of conducting their official business. In general, and as is evident from the available literature, it seems that Government organisations have been lagging behind in this regard. The failure to reap the expected benefits from this step by government institutions such as the Presidency forms the basis for this investigation, which examines the failures and successes in the implementation of an EDRMS and the factors affecting this process. The study used triangulation approach in order to arrive at a more reliable conclusion. Literature research has been used as a main data collection method for this study. It also serves as a basis for the approaches to subject matter that have been adopted. Data was also collected by conducting semi –structured interviews with government institutions, including the subject of this research, that have implemented EDRMS. The critical factors that have had an effect on the implementation of EDRMS were found to be of a strategic, social and technical nature. The study also found similarities in the factors affecting EDRMS implementation within government and identifies the need for further research focusing on how these factors differ between various types of organisations.

DCSs are complex systems in the sense that their emergent global behavior results from decentralized interaction of its parts and is not guided directly from a central point. In our study, we present a complex system model that efficiently manages the ressources of a DCS. The entities of the DCS react to system instability and adjust their environmental condtions for optimizing system performance. The structure of the interaction networks that allow fast and reliable access to available resources is studied and improvements ar proposed

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: A Document Management System (DMS) can help businesses speed-up as well as reduce the number of mundane and repetitive tasks relating to documents. These benefits can assist management cut costs, reduce errors, automate frequently performed tasks as well as store information electronically in a safe and accessible way. Making IT Simple (the business) is a start-up business that has entered into a partnership agreement with INVU, Europe's fastest growing DMS Software developer (INVU, 2008). This agreement allows the business to sell INVU software without restriction by volume or geography to all sectors of industry. INVU products are designed to make business administration, and especially managing documents a simple and efficient process. These two principle product features support the business' objectives and marketing push by delivering easy-to-use software that helps customers reduce costs by speeding-up as well as reduce the number of daily administrative tasks performed using documents. In order to establish which market sector to target, the Directors conducted an industry analysis (Appendix I) which has identified opportunities in the farming and agricultural Sector. The three primary reasons are: 1) Sustainable sector growth of 30% per annum (UK Agriculture, 2007), 2) no known DMS competition within Farming and 3) the Directors have an established Network and detailed knowledge of the sector. Although farming and agriculture will be the main focus of marketing activity and communication, other industries, such as property letting agencies, are also seen as future opportunities for the business. Target Market and Projections Market Research is based upon 138 questionnaire responses that have enabled the Directors to develop a product package which combines the product, a DMS license and software, together with the necessary hardware and maintenance support sufficient to satisfy the target market's needs. The target market is defined as a farm business, predominantly farming crops or cattle and/or sheep from between 41 and 80 hectares of productive land. It has up to 20 full time employees, half of whom are involved in the business' administration. This admin comprises mainly of financial accounts and Government Department returns which are processed on as many as two computers which have email, Microsoft Office and accounting software packages loaded on. For security and access the target market store their records in filing cabinets for up to 15 years, mostly in paper form. A priority for business' administration within this market is the simplicity and easy access of its records and with all records being in one place. The sales forecasts of 7, 16 and 30 units over the first three years 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively are deemed achievable by the Directors, having received reassurance from both formal interviews (Radley, 2008) and conversations with potential customers. The business sees their target market strategy and their lean cost base as being their competitive advantage together with the impression that none of INVU's DMS competitors are currently focussed upon the agriculture sector. This gives the business a potential first mover advantage which will be supported by leveraging the marketing efforts and the existing network of contacts to deliver the specifically designed sales process for the target market. The suite of products, which are leased by the customer over 36 months, cost £15,016 and have a Gross Profit of 58%. This gross profit then funds the running and maintenance of the support service provided by the company. Return on Equity over the 3 years of the Business Plan is strong at 60% given that there is a loss of £50,000 in Year 1. Year two generates a small profit of £24,000 with a healthy £64,000 in Year 3 onwards. Return on sales is 10% in year 2 growing to 14% in year 3. Break even point is in July 2011 (month 31) with the business cash positive in August 2010 (month 20). The financial risks are calculated as low due to the lease funding providing cash within 14 days of a signed document, plus there is no cash risk as the requirement to hold inventory is negligible. The balance sheet requires equity funding of £40,000 which is provided by the two directors at £20,000 each, plus a 60 month working-capital bank loan which is forecast to be repaid on month 25. There are 46,000 farms in UK so, in this market sector alone there are potentially 9,200 (20%) sales presentations to be completed based upon the market survey data. On projected performance this would currently take the business 460 months to complete. The business case shows an improving performance month on month based upon an improvement in sales skills, product portfolio and brand awareness. The two employees Edward Gibbs and Mathew Easterbrook, both of whom are Directors, have each invested £20,000 in equity in order to start-up the business. They have 28 years of management experience between them and offer complementing specialities in the IT, sales, farming and finance areas. Their business objectives are to generate cash and satisfy customer needs by selling products at the right price with a sustainable gross profit margin whilst being commercially aggressive on costs. Their simple and equitable company structure reflects their excellent relationship and the balance of power is shared equally. The product is a compliment of hardware, software and support service that is tailored to meet a customer's needs (Table 1).

Full textThis thesis interested on developing a stand-alone photovoltaic system with self-diagnosis possibility. A specific structure has been proposed consisting in a DC hybridization of photovoltaic sources, a Lithium-based battery and supercapacitors. Dynamics models of the boost converter and the current-fed dual-bridge DC-DC converter are proposed and an efficient state observer is proposed to estimate the models equivalent losses' parameters online. It is shown that the estimated parameters can be used in the energy management scheme, with in particular optimisation of the efficiency of paralleled structures. The photovoltaic source optimization is also studied with special attention on shading phenomenon and design of MPPT technique especially on the case of distributed series architecture. Through a specific hybridization structure, State-Of-Health estimation is tested on Li-ion and LiFePO4 batteries. It is shown that the isolated coupled-inductors Cuk converter is very efficient for battery estimation through current injection. Finally, a global energy management scheme is proposed, and the developed stand-alone photovoltaic system is validated to operate as supposed

Full textThe limited energy and recharge cycles of batteries are crippling the design of autonomous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). To overcome this issue, everlasting harvested energy and supercapacitor-based energy storage are considered as potential solutions to achieve a theoretically infinite lifetime. A Power Manager (PM) is embedded in each WSN node to respect the Energy Neutral Operation condition (ENO), which means harvested energy is equal to consumed energy for a long period. In this thesis, a set of PMs are proposed for energy harvesting WSN nodes to adapt their average consumed energy by changing the wake-up interval according to the available harvested energy. Our PMs are low complexity, independent of energy sources, small memory footprint and therefore, can be easily implemented on a real EH-WSN node. Another issue addressed in this thesis when considering a multi-hop EH-WSN is the effect of wake-up interval variations to the global QoS. Due to its low harvested energy, a relay node is impractical to synchronize with a transmitter if its wake-up interval regularly changes, therefore degrading the global QoS. A new power manager, named Wake-up Variation Reduction power manager (WVR-PM) is proposed to reduce the variations of the wake-up interval. By using WVR-PM, the throughput of a multi-hop EH-WSN can be improved up to 59% compare to state-of-the-art PMs while the average consumed energy for one successful communication is reduced by 45%

Full textThis thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of HOLC in context of the HSCM and to propose a decision model which applies to the phases of HOLC the decision making regarding a real situation . This include the implementation of the proposed model to design and develop a decision support tool in order to improve the performance of humanitarian logistics in both national and international relief operations. This research is divided into three phases; the first phase is to clarify and define HL among HSCM, commercial supply chain management (CSCM) and SCM and their relationship. Project Life Cycle Management (PLCM) approaches are also presented. The difference between project life cycle management (PLM) and PLCM is also required to distinguish a clear understanding which can be addressed in the phase of humanitarian operation life cycle. Additionally, the literature of Multiple-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) models and existing decision aid system for HL are analyzed to establish the research gap. The MCDM approaches which implement the decision support system (DSS) and lastly how DSS has been used in the HSCM context. The second phase is to propose a decision model based on MCDM approaches to support the decision of the decision maker before he/she takes action. This model provides the ranking alternatives to warehouse, supplier and transportation over the phases of HOLC. The proposed decision model is conducted in 3 scenarios; I. The decision in 4-phase HOLC, international relief operation of French Red Cross (FRC). II. The decision on 3-phase HOLC, national operation by the Thai Red Cross (TRC). III. The decision on response phase HOLC, international operation by the FRC in four countries. In this phase, the scenario I and II are performed step by step though numerical calculation and mathematical formulas. The scenario III will be presented in the third phase. In the third phase, an application of web-based multi-criteria decision support system (WB-MCDSS) which implement the proposed model is developed. The web-based multi-criteria decision support system is developed based on the integration of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and TOPSIS approaches. In order to achieve an appropriate decision in a real time response, the WB-MCDSS is developed based on server-client protocol and is simple to operate. Last but not least, a validation application of the model is performed using the sensitivity analysis approach

Full textThis thesis aims to clarify a sustainability implementation into supply chain and to develop a tool for measuring sustainability performance in supply chain and improving the sustainability performance for electronic industry in Thailand. This research has divided into three phases; the first phase is to clarify a sustainability measurement framework in supply chain. This framework allows decision makers identifying the sustainability measures based on their interesting area in sustainability criteria. There are eight categories of sustainability criteria in this framework which are financial, non-financial, raw material, natural resources, energy, human health and safety, human resources development, and ethical issues. The sustainability criteria in this framework have developed based on the concept of human needs and the triple bottom line concept. It have been justified by analyze with standard, guide line, and regulation involving sustainable development perspective. Moreover, this proposed framework enhances an engagement level of elements in supply chain as an important perspective to identifying the sustainability measures. After developing the conceptual framework for measuring sustainability performance, this thesis has proposed an approach to construct the performance measurement model. This work enhances the valuable of adopting the value chain model (Porter, 2008) and the process based approach (Chan and Qi, 2003) for constructing the sustainability measures model. This leads to an implementation of the proposed framework allowing decision makers to measures sustainability performance in any process or activity in the company and its supply chain. In order to implementing the proposed conceptual framework and the model construction method in practical situation, this thesis has selected the supplier performance evaluation problem for measuring sustainability performance. The second phase of this work is the development of the tool for measuring sustainability performance by focusing on supplier evaluation problem. The measurement tool is developed based on multi-criteria decision method. This model is not used for making a decision such as selecting the best supplier but it is a multicriteria decision aiding which help manager to establish supplier improvement program based on the results. The measurement tool is developed based on a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) approach. This thesis has proposed three FAHP methods by modified the extent analysis method (Method-I), modified the normalization approach (Method-II), and employed the weakest t-norm arithmetic (Method-III) for determining the fuzzy priority weight. These methods are easy to adopt in real-life problem in industry. The method-I is less complexity than method-II and method-III respectively but the method-I also obtains the larger fuzzy spread than method-II and method-III respectively. It is depends on the decision makers to select the proposed FAHP among these three methods for implementing in their situations. The results from supplier’s performance help manager for setting the direction to improve supplier’s sustainability by using the normalization rating from measurement model. The third phase of this thesis is an implementation of the proposed framework and proposed FAHP in the case study company in Thai electronics industry. The case study company aims to evaluate sustainability performance of their suppliers in order to manage and improve supplier’s performance. The sustainability performance measurement model consists of 10 indicators and 25 sustainability measures based on three dimensions (economic, environmental, and social). It is found that the importance weight of economic, environmental, and social dimension are 50.87%, 34.86%, and 15.14% respectively. It means that an economic performance is still the most important and the social performance is the less important of supplier’s evaluation

Full textThe increasing of competition, expanding markets and advanced technology create shorten lifecycle and the development process to improve product performance in terms of time, cost and quality. These shorten products lifecycle have led to increase volumes of waste generation and consequence impact to environment. EU directives have been introduced, such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and guidelines for the treatment of waste batteries (Battery), these directives are used to handle the hazardous substances which are harmful to human health and the environment. These regulations and standards have been put in place to force companies take their responsibilities on managing their products when reach to the end of life. Some companies have found that the returned product can be recycled or reused as an additional source of income (material recycling, or reuse of components after disassembly) in the manufacturing process.Knowledge related to the environmental performance (in terms of process design, production, transportation, storage, etc.) should be captured, evaluated and stored in knowledge base in order to share between users in different phases of the product lifecycle. Therefore, this research proposes a Knowledge Management Architecture based on a Multi-Agent System approach. The objective of this work is to propose a system that focuses on the concept of "sustainability” of products lifecycle by establishing the link between agents, who hold knowledge related to the environmental performances, and PLM system. The connection encourages companies considering the environmental impacts in their decision making at every stage of product lifecycle

Full textElectrical system is under a hard constraint: production and consumption must be equal. The production has to integrate non-controllable energy resources and to consider variability of local productions. While buildings are one of the most important energy consumers, the emergence of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the building integrates them in smart-grid as important consumer-actor players. Indeed, they have at their disposal various storage capacities: thermal storage, hot-water tank and also electrical battery. In our work we develop an hierarchical and distributed Building Energy Management Systems based on model predictive control in order to enable to shift, to reduce or even to store energy according to grid informations. The anticipation enables to plan the energy consumption in order to optimize the operating cost values, while the hierarchical architecture enables to treat the high resolution problem complexity and the distributed aspect enables to ensure the control modularity bringing adaptability to the controller

A proverbial saying, 「Knowledge Is Power」, which is familiar to ear from childhood. Now, it comes true again and it is still changeless even though passes through the time-test. After the 3rd industry revolution, the economy type has been changed to national economy. National games are starting, 「Knowledge」is the key that makes economy being succeeded. A great mass fervor has been raised from government organization、enterprise to individual and a great favor caused by Internet mushroomed. Community activities become frequently in network and from social civic organizations to technical professional organizations are being community gradually. The same purpose makes community, and the distribution of community becomes far less by Internet. Knowledge sharing and connection of people are the main items in those community activities. We will use WebDAV that is a kind of protocol, which is a developing extensional specification of HTTP in this paper and use its methods which is supported to establish cooperation services based on working in network. We also collocate the applications about XML techniques and the basic definition and working target of community and team to set up a sharing document management system works in network like working in true world which the system can make the community work more efficient.

Before computers were widespread, office documents were handwritten and placed in folders or binders to be filed. Each company normally would have a document management office to be responsible for these documents. However, as documents accumulated, it became difficult time-consuming to locate certain past records manually. Today, office workers can use computers to type up documents and store them as electronic files. To retrieve documents, keyword search can be applied to find them quickly. It is convenient and paperless office environments can be established.

Since the rate of publishing scientific literature grows each year, the size of published work available online is increasing rapidly, and several web-based (digital library) systems were implemented. Related researches are focused on providing several useful methods for efficiently and effectively browsing and searching relevant scientific documents, but less on the issue how to manage personal scientific documents. On the other hand, researchers download scientific documents into their specific personal hard disk where they can categorize documents with hierarchical folders according to publication years, research topics, etc. for future retrieval. However, this turns into a critical issue of personal scientific document management that deals with how to effectively index and efficiently search personal scientific documents when her or his personal archive is inevitably getting larger and larger day by day. LOCOST proposed in this paper can automatically processes the local sections of each document for term feature extraction. Therefore, users do not need to spend any time and effort to manually construct and maintain an organization system to manage their personal scientific documents. Moreover, LOCOST provides a useful interface for users to easily search important and/or relevant scientific document(s) from their archives. Particularly, the interface of LOCOST can display the content summaries of the retrieved documents that allow users to better understand the content of these documents and thus enable them to judge the level of importance and relevance of the retrieved documents to a given query. Consequently, LOCOST achieves ease of reusing personal scientific documents. LOCOST is not developed to compete with related prototype systems, but it can be used to complement with each other since LOCOST provides unique functionalities for managing personal scientific documents. In addition, when the location-based finding strategy (or navigation) fails to achieve the users’ information needs, LOCOST is suitable at this time for the logical finding strategy.

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the hottest topic in the communication domain in recent years. There are many applications to RFID such as Logistic, Production Process and Inventory Management. Therefore, it is the solution of replacing the barcode now. Document Management Systems are always focusing on the electronic document files but there are still a lot of paper documents in the enterprise environment. So, a lack of paper document management strategy makes a lot of problem such as the lost of document, the secret document being pirated or stolen. Hope this dissertation can do some research on how to use object tracking, the most important function of RFID technology, to track and manage business document. We propose the solution in this paper is RFID technology. Using tag, reader, middleware and application system can make paper document to be a recognizable object for computer system, so paper documents can be integrated in Document Management System. By integrating with Document Management System, and by auto detecting and tracking in fixed time, the paper with RFID tag can be managed and tracking by Document Management System directly. The research results of this paper are providing integrated document environment for user, using RFID technology in the office application, and successfully proposing the system structure and method for using RFID technology in the Document Management System. The benefit of this system is that we can surely manage physical paper document by computer. At the same time, it will make a link between electronic and paper document so it will be more flexible for the document user. The security problem of paper documents such as the lost of paper, being pirated and stolen can be solved.
