It is necessary to recognize masonry domes’ behavior under gravity loads in order to strengthen, restore, and conserve them. The neutral hoop plays a crucial role in identifying the masonry dome’s behavior to distinguish between its tensile and compressive regions. When it comes to determining the neutral hoop position in a dome with the same brick material, in addition to determining the dome’s curve and thickness, the support condition located on the boundary line is a significant parameter that has received less attention in the past. Therefore, this research aims to comprehensively define

Fire is considered a common hazard for civil structures. Public and administrative buildings are commonly designed by considering the standard fire rating and, in many cases, contain large compartments with central domes, in which fire growth can be significant. Moreover, tanks and underground fortified structures may be constructed as domes to support the heavy soil above. This paper numerically addressed such a case. First, an axisymmetric finite element model was developed and validated to predict the dome’s transient, thermal, structural, and thermal-structural behavior. Next, the model wa

In Bengali architecture, domes were commonly found in mosques and palaces. It has become our national architectural identity, influenced by Muslim kings. The dome was first utilized in mosques but is currently found in other structures. Permanence was the dominant feeling in the dome. The dome’s style varies from time to time. Muslims attempt to alter buildings’ design, form, and style using domes in many buildings. That is why we can observe different types of domes. Many masonry domes in their lower portion are subjected to hoop tensile forces which mostly lead to vertical cracks appearing along the dome's meridian planes. A close inspection of any such dome reveals these hoop tension cracks. The dome stands as a series of arches with common key stone, with cracks as a matter of non-structural consequences. Different strategies have been considered historically to arrest these cracks. The provision of tension ring mechanism adds to the stability of these domes, and hence many masonry domes are retrofitted with the provision of the tension rings using stee

Born of the need to cover large spaces without facing with the encumbrance of vertical elements, the domed cover, ideal for places of worship crowded by hundreds of faithful, has assumed, over the centuries, a symbolic meaning to every religion. ABSTRACT Prior to 1943 the Laurentide Ice Sheet was considered to have three major domes centered in Keewatin, Labrador, and Patricia (TYRRELL, 1898 a, b; 1913). FLINT (1943) argued that these centres were of only local and temporary importance and favoured a single-domed ice sheet. Despite the lack of supporting geological evidence, and despite the proposition of a Foxe Dome in the interim (IVES and ANDREWS, 1963), the single-dome concept was not seriously challenged until the late 1970's and, in fact, is still strenuously supported (HUGHES era/., 1977 ; DENTON and HUGHES, 1981). SUMMARY Lava domes form when highly viscous magmas erupt on the surface. Several types of lava dome morphology can be distinguished depending on the flow rate and the rheology of magma. Here, we develop a 2-D axisymmetric model of magma extrusion on the surface and lava dome evolution and analyse the dome morphology using a finite-volume method implemented in Ansys Fluent software. The magma/lava viscosity depends on the volume fraction of crystals and temperature. We show that the morphology of domes is influenced by two parameters: the characteristic time of crystal content growth (CCGT) and

An ellipsoidal dome is a conformal optical element used to replace a hemispherical dome on a missile to enhance its performance by reducing its aerodynamic drag. Conformal optics are a general class of optical systems in which the optical elements are shaped to optimize something other than image quality, such as aerodynamics. An ellipsoidal dome has lower aerodynamic drag than a comparably sized hemispherical dome. On a missile, lower drag improves its aerodynamic performance by increasing its range and fuel efficiency but degrades the quality of the transmitted wavefront. In particular, an e

Optical domes have traditionally been sections of concentric spheres or hemispheres. The concentric spherical shape facilitates the optical system design following the protective dome as well as the fabrication of the dome. Very little attention has been given to optimizing the aerodynamic performance of optical domes. New domes are being designed using techniques and design forms that are being developed to take optical as well as aerodynamic performance into account.
