In recent years, several studies have discovered traces of Alzheimer's (AD) biomarkers in a large portion of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), which have been associated with subsequent dementia (PDD). However, the manifestation of AD biomarkers in PD is not fully understood. At present, few studies have investigated how common AD biomarkers are in newly diagnosed and unmedicated patients with PD. This cross-sectional cohort study investigated whether AD biomarkers were present in unmedicated and newly diagnosed patients with PD and patients with PD and overlapping clinical symptoms (cog

Abstract:
Background. Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare, sporadic disease characterized by autonomic failure and a various combination of parkinsonism and cerebellar dysfunction. Currently, development of new treatment strategies in MSA is hampered by the lack of reliable diagnostic and disease-progression biomarkers. The aim of this study was to investigate brain microstructural abnormalities in MSA through diffusion and neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and their relationship with clinical manifestations. Methods. Clinical evaluation and MRI were performed on 11 MSA patie

Abstract:
α-synuclein is a small presynaptic protein whose misfolding and aggregation are considered drivers of the neurological disorders Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy, dementia with Lewy bodies and related synucleopathies. α-synuclein exists in a dynamic state that changes from an α-helical conformation when bound to liposomes to natively unfolded in solution, the majority being in the latter state. The disease process by which native healthy α-synuclein undergoes a change in conformation to form β-sheet oligomers and fibrils is still unresolved. The fibrillation process has been widely

A total of 85,510 patients suffered from PD have been under treated in 2008 in Taiwan. It has been showed that screening for early PD can lead to 51% reduction for late stage of PD, and 25% mortality reduction. Thus, early detection could relieve medical burden from PD for patients themselves, the family members, and even for society. However, the cost-effectiveness of PD screening was never addressed.
