Echinococcosis of the liver is an important problem of hematology, which in many cases is solved only with the help of surgical methods of treatment. This is primarily due to the significant number of patients with cystic echinococcosis of the liver in endemic regions, despite the implementation of preventive measures. There are still many complicated and unsolved questions concerning differential diagnostics and choice of tactics of surgical treatment for liver echinococcosis. The problem of surgical treatment of liver echinococcosis is far from its final solution. Single liver cysts were found in 63 (87.5%) patients, multiple – in 9 (12.5%). Among patients with solitary cysts, the right lobe was more often affected than the left – 48 (66.7%) vs 24 (33.3%) cases. Echinococcosis of central localizatio

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the larval form of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. In humans, E. alveolaris metacestode cells proliferate in the liver inducing a hepatic disorder that mimics liver cancer and can spread to other organs. From 1960 to 1972 mortality was at 70% and 94% after 5 and 10 years of follow-up, respectively. Since then, studies have shown an increasing trend towards improving survival rates [1]. As AE is also spreading to new areas of Eastern Europe, researchers seek to better understand the clinical presentation of pathology, including asymptomatic fo

According to the WHO, «…at any given time, more than 1 million people worldwide are aff ected by echinococcosis…». Due to the lack of tendency to decrease the number of patients and the existence of endemic regions where the incidence rate varies from 1.2 to 9.0 per 100,000 population, this parasitic disease continues to be a serious medical and social problem. At the present stage, the diagnosis of echinococcosis does not present signifi cant diffi culties, mainly due to the emergence of non-invasive imaging methods, the informative value of the complex application of which reaches 95-100 %.A

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is an important reason for liver transplantation. Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by Echinococcus multilocularis and presents characteristic calcified conglomerates detected by ultrasound or computed tomography scan of the liver. Symptoms of AE only occur after a long period of infection when cholestasis or cholangitis becomes apparent. Here, we report on a patient with presumed autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. After liver transplantation, alveolar echinococcosis was diagnosed in the liver explant.

Various pathological forms can become life-threatening, and in these cases, treatment is extremely difficult.
