This thesis attempts to analyze the market response of stock prices of major U.S. banks to the February, 1987 Brazilian loan default announcement. The study's general hypothesis is that the market revalued stock prices according to each bank's amount of Brazilian loan exposure. Extreme poverty is a reality facing over a billion people, and a striking contradiction is that huge disparities coexist with a relatively rapid economic growth. This thesis investigates whether economic growth reduces poverty. O levantamento do número de medicamentos inovadores licenciados no Brasil pela agência reguladora de medicamentos durante quatro anos, entre 1998 e 2001, mostrou 154 medicamentos inovadores (fármacos com nova estrutura molecular). A maioria deles (57,1% do total) foi concentrada em quatro classes terapêuticas: quimioterapia sistêmica (39 produtos), analgesia e anestesia (20), aparelho cardiovascular (15) e hormônios e anti-hormônios (14). I find strong evidence that although most working children are also attending school, they are falling well behind their peers.
