Duplex stainless steels can be very attractive alternatives to austenitic grades due to their almost double strength at equal pitting corrosion resistance. When welding, the duplex alloys normally require addition of filler metal, while the commodity austenitic grades can often be welded autogenously. Over-alloyed consumables are used to counteract segregation of important alloying elements and to balance the two phases, ferrite and austenite, in the duplex weld metal. This work focuses on the weldability of the recently-developed lean duplex stainless steel LDX 2101® (EN 1.4162, UNS S32101).

The master´s thesis is focused on the manufacture of mobile phone holder. The semi-finished productis a 1.5 mm thick steel sheetroll of S235JRG1. The annual seriesis set at 200,000 units per year. For the production of the part, the method of shearing and bending in a combined tool was chosen. Both technologies were dissected in a literary study, and a production process was developed to design a tool. A suitable production line was purchased for the entire production and the suitability of production was economicallye valuated.
