Abstract:
Electrically conductive zirconia tungsten carbide composites are attractive materials for manufacturing precision components by electrical discharge machining due to their high strength, toughness and electrical conductivity. In this study, nanocomposite ceramics with a ytterbia samaria co-stabilized zirconia 1.5Yb-1.5Sm-TZP matrix and 24–32 vol.% tungsten carbide dispersion were manufactured by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1400 °C for 15 min at 60 MPa pressure. The materials exhibited high strengths of 1300–1600 MPa, a moderate fracture resistance of 6 MPa√m and an ultrafine microstructure

We describe an approach to electrically control the strong interaction between a single electron spin and the vibrational motion of a suspended carbon nanotube resonator. The strength of the deflection-induced spin-phonon coupling is dependent on the wavefunction of the electron confined in a lateral carbon nanotube quantum dot. An electrical field along the nanotube shifts the effective center of the quantum dot, leading to the corresponding modification of the spin-phonon strength. Numerical simulations with experimentally reachable parameters show that high fidelity quantum state transfer b

Polymeric insulating materials are being re-evaluated in the context of the re-emergence of HVDC and its advantages in bulk power transfer over long distances. This has been met with new sets of requirement such as; the use of polymeric insulation, compaction of HV equipment (e.g. HV cables), and innovations in converter technology. This equipment requires high power rating and hence will be exposed to high electric stresses. One of the properties of polymeric DC insulation is its ability to retain injected charges at high DC fields leading to local field modification and subsequent breakdown

Locating a radio transmitter is important in a number of problems such as finding radio tags, people with radios, and devices that are collecting information in an unauthorized manner. Locating a radio transmitter is inherently difficult because the radio waves of concern are not in the visible spectrum, they reflect and distort easily, and they propagate at the speed of light. A number of methods for locating transmitters are currently used, the majority of which require expensive hardware and extensive processing. We investigate an important aspect of source localization, namely, that of optimally placing sensors. Two specific issues are investigated. The first is one of source monitoring.
