Kogia, Maria. "High temperature electromagnetic acoustic transducer for guided wave testing." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/14491.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the theoretical analysis, development and experimental evaluation of a water cooled Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) specifically designed for high-temperature Guided Wave Testing (GWT). Its novel design and detailed calculation of its optimum operating conditions resulted in its effectiveness at high temperatures for both short (500oC) and long-term inspection (250oC). All the steps followed for the theoretical and experimental investigation of the limitations of the existing technology and the development of a probe that can overcome these boundaries are pr

Abstract:
Ultrasound is widely used as a tool for non destructive testing, being completely non invasive and much safer than some other methods, X ray techniques for example. Its low relative cost is also attractive purely from a business standpoint. Its use, however, is restricted more to applications where the ultrasonic transducer and test piece can be brought into close contact, thus allowing the use of couplant gels. In situations where a fully non contacting method is required the cost and complexity of an ultrasonic system is considerably higher. These usually take the form of laser based systems

Abstract:
At present, the dominant technology for transducers in the field of Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing is piezoelectric. However, some industrially important applications, like the inspection of components operating at high temperature or while in motion, are difficult tasks for standard piezoelectric probes since mechanical contact is required. In these cases, contactless NDT techniques can be an attractive alternative. Among the available options, Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) can generate and detect ultrasonic waves without the need for a physical contact between the probe an

This research covers modeling of Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) and their application in excitation and detection of longitudinal guided Lamb wave modes for evaluation of flaws in cylindrical pipes. The combination of the configuration of transducers and the frequency of the input current is essential for successful excitation of desired guided wave modes and for proper interpretation of the results. In this study EMATs were successfully constructed and longitudinal modes L(0,1) and L(0,2) were excited in the pipe. From the recorded signals the level of simulated damage in pi

This Thesis describes techniques used in the analysis of aerospace adhesively bonded sandwich joints using radially polarised shear wave EMATs, together with an analysis of the general performance of the EMAT systems used in the investigation. It is generally accepted that to date there is no satisfactory technique for the detection of defect types commonly encountered in adhesively bonded aerospace samples. This has limited the use of adhesives for joining components on critical parts, where no additional fixing techniques are used. Consequently, if a test procedure could be developed to accu

Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are increasingly used in industries due to their attractive features of being non-contact, cost-effective and the fact that a variety of wave modes can be generated, etc. There are two major EMATs coupling mechanisms: the Lorentz force mechanism for conductive materials and the magnetostriction mechanism for ferromagnetic materials; EMATs operated on Lorentz force mechanism are the focus of this study.
