Abstract:
The process stability of finishing mill is significantly influenced by the clearance between the chocks and housing in mill stands. The on-site data of a finishing mill had shown that the clearances in the finishing mill stands were clearly associated with the incidence of strip end flip. The aim of this work was to establish a numerical model to analyze the effect of the clearances on the deviation of the centerline of the strip and on the incidence of strip end flip. By adopting conditions from a particular strip, the numerical model not only predicted the strip end shape, but also visualize

Measurements have been made for tip clearances up to 15% of chord in a turbine cascade which has been used previously to study the tip-leakage flow at smaller clearances. The work is part of a study of the aerodynamics of turbines which have experienced in-service damage and is related to Engine Health Monitoring. Detailed flow field measurements have been made upstream and downstream of the cascade and static pressure distributions have been measured on the endwall and at the midspan of the blade. The most unexpected result was that the blade end losses (that is, the sum of the secondary and

Abstract Environmental and regulatory pressures have prompted original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to explore highly boosted internal combustion (IC) engines as a means to minimize toxic air pollutants and meet strict legislative targets. The exhaust gas turbocharger is a key technology used to achieve the boost pressures necessary for advanced engines of the future. Centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers have been widely implemented in turbochargers for IC engines, particularly passenger vehicles, mainly due to their compact size and ability to deliver high pressure ratios over a

This paper deals with the numerical investigations on a low pressure axial turbine stage to assess the effect of variation in rotor tip clearance and tip coolant ejection rate on the end wall losses. The rotor, along with the NGV, was modeled to represent the entire turbine stage. The CFX TASCflow software was used to perform steady state analysis for different rotor tip clearances and different tip coolant ejection rates. The locations of the cooling slots were identified on the blade tip and the coolant ejection rate was specified at these areas. The simulations were carried out with tip cle

Squeeze Film Dampers (SFDs) are effective to ameliorate shaft vibration amplitudes and to suppress instabilities in rotor-bearing systems. Compact aero jet engines implement ultra-short length SFDs (L/D ≤ 0.2) to satisfy stringent weight and space demands with low parts count. This paper describes a test campaign to identify the dynamic forced response of an open ends SFD (L=25.4 mm, D=125.7 mm), single film land and oil fed through three holes (120° apart), operating with similar conditions as in an aircraft engine. Two journals make for two SFD films with clearances cA=0.129 mm and cB=0.254

Abstract:
To rotate the vane of variable geometry turbine, the end walls contours of the turbine have to be spherical. If the end walls are cylinders, there will be nonuniform clearances between the ends of the vane and the end walls. In these two cases, the flow fields of the rotated vanes are simulated and compared. Special attentions are paid to the flows in the spherical clearances and nonuniform clearances under four rotating angles. The leakage flow and the loss are investigated and analyzed in this paper.

The use of stator endwall leading-edge sweep to improve axial-flow compressor stator row performance was examined experimentally. The aerodynamics of three stator hub (inner diameter) conditions, namely, a running clearance, a stationary clearance, and a shroud were also investigated. Leading-edge sweep in the endwall regions of a stator blade can be beneficial in terms of loss reduction on the casing (outer diameter) end of a stator blade. It can also help at the hub end of a stator blade when either a stationary hub clearance or a hub shroud is used. A leading-edge sweep is detrimental (loca

This project is a continuation of research to enhance dry gas seal (DGS) reliability. Previous work reviewed failures from literature and experience of manufacturers and end-users and identified that liquid contamination was the most common cause, but it was concluded there was insufficient quantitative data to base recommendations on for further DGS reliability enhancements. Therefore, experimental and analytical investigations were pursued to fill the void. The ultimate objective was to be able to predict DGS failures due to liquid contamination, which could lead to greater DGS reliability t

SEISMIC PERFORMANCE AND REPLACEABILITY OF STEEL FRAME STRUCTURES WITH REPLACEABLE BEAM SEGMENTS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.1.8.

Abstract:
This study assessed the seismic performance and replaceability of steel frame structures incorporating replaceable beam segments. A reduced-beam-section beam-column joint featuring a replaceable energy dissipation beam segment was specifically designed for this purpose. The joint underwent quasi-static analysis subjected to low-cycle reciprocating loading. The study extended to a single-story, single-span plane steel frame, where reduced-beam-section beam-column joints with replaceable energy dissipation beam segments were analyzed for hysteretic and deformation behavior.
