Survivors of bone marrow transplant (BMT) with total body irradiation (TBI) in childhood are known to suffer late-effects due to toxicities of malignancy and its treatments including chemotherapy, glucocorticoids and TBI. Well described late-effects include short stature, gonadal failure, growth hormone deficiency (GHD), fatigue and reduced quality oflife (QOL). Emerging late-effects include increased central adiposity, reduced lean mass, increased risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular mortality. Many features are shared with the GHD phenotype but the effects of growth hormone (GH) tre

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) encompasses several disorders related to disruptions in the adrenal steroid production pathway. These disruptions may cause virilization of the external female sex organs, incorrect gender assignment, precocious puberty, and in the most severe form, may cause life-threatening salt wasting and adrenal crisis if not detected and treated early in the newborn period. 17α-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) is the primary target for immunofluorescence detection of CAH from dried blood spots in newborn screening (NBS). Abstract:
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a multi-functional cellular compartment that functions in protein folding, lipid biosynthesis, and calcium homeostasis. Perturbations to ER function lead to the dysregulation of ER homeostasis, causing the accumulation of unfolded and misfolded proteins in the cell. This is a state of ER stress. ER stress elicits a cytoprotective, adaptive signaling cascade to mitigate stress, the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR). As long as the UPR can moderate stress, cells can produce the proper amount of proteins and maintain a state of homeostasis. If the UPR, however, is

Review question / Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effect of bariatric surgery on pancreas fat accumulation. Condition being studied: Pancreatic steatosis is characterized by increased accumulation of fat in the pancreas. The most common causes are obesity and metabolic syndrome. Due to this close association between obesity and metabolic syndrome, one can assume that, in addition to a rapid and sustained weight loss, bariatric surgery could affect metabolic syndrome and its components. However, it remains unclear whether bariatric surgery and weight loss
