Considerable energy resources are consumed in the production of building materials, during construction and installation works, for operation with current and major repairs, reconstruction, dismantling, utilisation and recycling. As a rule, these energy resources are non-renewable, therefore, for energy saving purposes, it is necessary to take into account the total energy consumption of capital construction facilities during their life cycle. In this paper, we review the energy requirements to make materials on a global scale by focusing on the five construction materials that dominate energy used in material production: steel, cement, paper, plastics and aluminium. We then estimate the possibility of reducing absolute material production energy by half, while doubling production from the present to 2050. The goal therefore is a 75 per cent reduction in energy intensity. Four technology-based strategies are investigated, regardless of cost: (i) widespread application of best available technology (BAT), (ii) BAT to cutting-edge tech

Traditional life cycle assessments often rely on static emission factors, overlooking the dynamic nature of the energy grid. As renewable energy penetration increases, grid carbon intensity fluctuates significantly across time and regions, due to the inherent intermittency of renewable sources like wind and solar. The paper presents the procedures of introducing the unsteady state numerical analysis domain for simulating the mechanical behavior of glue laminated timber (glulam) elements when subjected to high temperatures. For any analysis applied to characterize the fire resistance of wood, glue laminated timber implicitly, the unsteady state numerical analysis domain must be applied, considering the heat propagation, humidity percentage loss and the overall change of the mechanical characteristics of the components through a phenomenon that can be simulated as phase transformation. Abstract:
Abstract Hydrogen is seen as a meaningful pathway for reducing carbon emissions attributed to the consumption of oil and gas products. Its combustion is similar enough to conventional fuels, so it can feasibly be implemented in applications like internal combustion engines and household appliances with slight or no modifications. Furthermore, consumption of hydrogen via combustion or electrochemical processes produces water vapor as the only emissions product. However, production of hydrogen is presently very carbon intensive, and transportation of hydrogen is very difficult. Here, we show how

Abstract:
The global fragmentation of production has important implications for the environment. As emerging economies increase their participation in trade, scale effects increase environmental impacts worldwide. Yet at the same time, access to international markets might help offset these impacts by increasing the efficiency of production. Existing literature suggests that trading firms tend to be more energy efficient than non-traders. However, this literature does not take into account the effect of firms’ product baskets. In this paper, we leverage a rich plantand product-level database from India

Abstract:
The issues of ensuring the stability and safety of energy generating equipment, including through various innovative aspects of cyber security, are currently extremely relevant; Energy equipment when used within the framework of construction projects is quite autonomous and issues of operational management and online control can be fully resolved within the capacity of their internal processors and controllers. In many cases, issues of computer modeling of the operating cycle parameters of such equipment, with the correct and economical formulation of the problem, can also be solved using the

Full text
Abstract:
Producing construction materials requires a great amount of energy, and in Saudi Arabia, this production currently entails the use of substantial amounts of liquid fuels. Liquid fuels are mostly sold at below-market prices domestically, and thus result in large opportunity costs for the government. Saudi Arabia’s interests reside in displacing higher-value liquid fuels with more appropriate alternatives. The Saudi government plans to encourage the displacement of oil by reforming the below-market oil prices. Alternatives could include other fuels and more energy-efficient manufacturing process

Many factors affect pavement compaction quality, which can vary. Such variability may result in an additional number of passes required, extended working hours, higher energy consumption, and negative environmental impacts. The use of Intelligent Compaction (IC) technology during construction can improve the quality and longevity of pavement structures while reducing risk for contractors and project owners alike. This study develops guidelines for the implementation of IC in the compaction of pavement layers as well as performing a preliminary life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of IC technology c

Abstract:
Using the dynamic, three-region environmental multi-sector general equilibrium model EMuSe, we find that pricing carbon in Germany or Spain only leads to a permanent negative effect on output in these economies. The induced emissions reduction is not large enough to overcompensate for the increase in marginal production costs. If the rest of Europe joins the carbon pricing scheme, long-run output effects are positive. However, in this case, transition costs are even larger due to close trade relations within Europe. We find evidence for carbon leakage, which can be reduced slightly by a border
