Abstract:
Abstract Layout optimization of junctions yields the minimum number of junctions. And a fewer junctions means fewer joint components or fewer spot-welding operations, and this leads to higher production efficiency. A method is developed for optimizing the layout of junctions between two structures so as to minimize the relative displacement between them when one of them is oscillated by noise disturbances. A quadratic response function serves as the expected value of relative displacement between the two structures and as the objective function in the optimization process. A set of evenly dist

Abstract Tight carbonate development is moving towards longer laterals requiring a higher number of fracturing stages to complete a given well. A higher stage count implies longer completion time and higher costs. Therefore, an engineered strategy using technology enablers is indispensable to reducing the number of stages while retaining the well performance objective. A 6,250-ft cemented lateral initially planned with 13 fracturing stages was analyzed for lithology and reservoir development to revise the perforation strategy to complete with more clusters per stage and reduced the number of s

Cetorelli, Nicola, and Saketh Prazad. The Nonbank Footprint of Banks. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.59576/sr.1118.

Full text
Abstract:
U.S. bank holding companies (BHCs) have developed a very significant nonbank footprint over the years, adding thousands of specialty lenders, brokers and dealers, asset management, and insurance subsidiaries to their organizations. These nonbank subsidiaries represent a sizeable share of aggregate BHC assets and a significant component of the entire U.S. nonbank industry. We argue that liquidity management synergies are an important driver of the coexistence of commercial banks and nonbank subsidiaries within BHCs. Using unique data on BHC organizational structure and financial reports, we sho

To evaluate the comparative effectiveness and harms of partial breast irradiation (PBI) compared with whole breast irradiation (WBI) for early-stage breast cancer, and how differences in effectiveness and harms may be influenced by patient, tumor, and treatment factors, including treatment modality, target volume, dose, and fractionation. We also evaluated the relative financial toxicity of PBI versus WBI. Data sources. Abstract:
Invasive exotic plant (IEP) species are a significant threat to natural ecosystem integrity and biodiversity, and controlling them is a high priority for the National Park Service. The Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected the early detection of IEPs as one of 11 monitoring protocols to be implemented as part of its long-term monitoring program. This report represents work completed at Colorado National Monument during 2021. During monitoring conducted June 9–15, a total of 15 priority IEP species in 395 patches were detected on 53.6 kilometers (33.3 mi) of monitoring routes. An ad

Full text
Abstract:
There is circumstantial evidence of hydrogen playing a role in, so called, low pH SCC of pipeline steel, but direct evidence for such is lacking. Resolution of this situation is of practical importance because of its implications for modeling. Thus, existing models for high pH SCC of pipelines are based upon a dissolution controlled mechanism of crack growth, but such models will not be applicable to low pH SCC if hydrogen is involved with the latter. Measurements have been made of the permeation of hydrogen into X52 and X60 pipeline steels at various potetials while exposed to a simulated gro

Abstract:
New research by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Empowering People in Care (EPIC) highlights the importance of the combined effects of school experiences and care experiences on the post-school lives of young people leaving care. At the end of February 2025, there were 5,801 children (0–17 years) in care in Ireland. Although being in the care of the state is common among these children and young people, they are not a homogenous group, and their personal experiences and circumstances vary. This exploratory study draws on focus group interviews with a small group of care-ex

There are approximately 176 miles of coastline around the islands, about 80% of which is composed of rock. The diversity and undisturbed nature of the tidepools of this rocky coastline were recognized as special features of the islands in the enabling legislation. Quantum Science and Technology (QST) is rapidly emerging as a transformative field, with the potential to impact sectors such as healthcare, energy, agriculture, and secure communication. Its relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is increasingly recognized. However, access to its benefits remains highly uneven. In 2022, quantum technology startups attracted $2.35 billion in investments, an all-time high, yet still modest compared to the $90+ billion invested globally in Artificial Intelligence (AI) startups the same year. While QST investment is projected to grow to $8 billion

Systematic rare plant survey at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Final report (sensitive version). National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2300521.

Abstract:
EnviroScience, Inc. completed a systematic rare plant survey in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CUVA). CUVA staff use the visitor use management planning (VUMP) process to draft proposed management zones for the park to track resource degradation and guide management decisions. The VUMP process has identified a critical need for a park-wide rare plant inventory to supplement outdated surveys conducted from 1986 to the early 2000s. This systematic transect-based survey was designed to provide current rare plant data to inform the VUMP process. These updated rare plant data will support the N
