Abstract:
This book examines Homer’s use of Hades as a poetic resource. By portraying Hades as a realm where vision is not possible, Homer creates a unique poetic environment where social constraints and divine prohibitions are not applicable. The resulting narrative emulates that of the Muses but is markedly distinct from it, as in Hades experimentation with and alteration of epic forms and values can be pursued, giving rise to a ‘poetics of Hades’. In the Iliad, Homer shows how this alternative poetics works through the visit of Patroclus’ shade in Achilles’ dream. The recollection offered by the shad

Abstract:
Voltaire was a poet first and foremost, in his own eyes as well as in the eyes of his contemporaries, and throughout his long life he never stopped writing verse. ‘The Epicurean poet’ explains how Epicureanism shaped Voltaire’s thinking and how he took a paradoxical stance in the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns. It describes his early epic poem La Henriade and his libertine verse such as La Pucelle, a bawdy mock epic poem about Joan of Arc. It also discusses his poem Stances à Mme Du Châtelet, composed in 1741, which typifies Voltaire’s lyric voice at its most persuasive.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the trajectory and implied audiences of a cluster of Latin translations of Paradise Lost that emerged in the long eighteenth century. These, by a certain J.C. (1686), Hog (1690), Power (1691), Trapp (1740), and Dobson (1753), are discussed in relation to theoretical and pedagogical precepts about translation, the important tradition of neo-Latin poetry, and the perennial debate about la questione della lingua. Informed by current translational theory, the analysis considers the multifunctional aims and consequences of Latinizing Milton, whereby the translator, employing a r

Abstract:
Voltaire arrived in London in May 1726, primarily to publish a definitive edition of his epic La Henriade as censorship made this impossible in France. ‘The Englishman’ describes how Voltaire immersed himself in English culture, frequently going to the theatre and making the acquaintance of the leading writers and poets of the day. Voltaire began writing his Letters on the English in England in 1727. The work comprises twenty-odd short essays dealing with religion, politics, science, and literature. Together they constitute the portrait of a culture and a manifesto of Enlightenment values. Let

Abstract:
This pioneering handbook offers a comprehensive consideration of the dynamic relationship between English literature and religion in the early modern period. The years from the coronation of Henry VII to the death of Queen Anne were turbulent times in the history of the British Church—and produced some of the greatest devotional poetry, sermons, polemics, and epics of literature in English. The early modern interaction of rhetoric and faith is addressed in forty chapters of original research, divided into five sections. The first analyses the changes within the Church from the Reformation to t

Abstract:
An Unholy Brew is the first book on alcohol in premodern India. Using a wide range of sources from the Vedas to the Kāmasūtra, the book explores the drinks, styles of drinking, and sophisticated theories of abstinence found in South Asia from our earliest Sanskrit written records through the second millennium CE. It begins with the intoxicating drinks people devised over the centuries, made from grains, sugars, fruits, and herbs. Texts describe a number of types of drinking: public drinking at the brewery-tavern, and at festivals and weddings. Poetic texts depict elite drinking, often in an er
