Abstract Understanding estrogen’s regulation of phase II detoxification enzymes is important in explaining how estrogen exposure increases the risk of developing certain cancers. Phase II enzymes such as glutathione-S-transferases (GST) and quinone reductase protect against developing chemically induced cancers by metabolizing reactive oxygen species. Phase II enzyme expression is regulated by a cis-acting DNA sequence, the antioxidant response element (ARE). It has previously been reported that several antiestrogens, but not 17β-estradiol, could regulate ARE-mediated gene transcription. Our g

Abstract The impact of estrogens on the cardiovascular system and their ability to regulate platelet function are matters of controversy. The recent finding that estrogen receptors are expressed in human platelets renders these cells an excellent model for studying the nongenomic effects of these hormones. In this work, we investigated 17β-estradiol–dependent signaling in platelets from adult healthy men. 17β-estradiol caused the rapid phosphorylation of the tyrosine kinases Src and Pyk2 and the formation of a signaling complex, which included Src, Pyk2, and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase.

The natural estrogen, 17β-estradiol (E2), is a well-studied immunomodulatory hormone at both environmental and pharmacologic levels. Conversely, little data exist regarding the immune effects of EE at either environmentally-relevant exposure levels or at pharmacological levels. Further, EE is delivered to patients in a clinical setting via different routes of exposure (e.g. subcutaneous or oral).

Abstract:
Computational medicinal chemistry, if used properly and in accordance with the available experimental data, may provide significant support to rational drug design. Herein, an overview of the computational approaches that have been applied to an estrogen receptor α (ERα) and endowed in the rational design of pM ERα antagonists with profound anti-breast cancer activity either in vitro or in vivo, will be presented. ERα is a 17β-estradiol inducible transcriptional regulator that initiates the RNA polymerase II-dependent transcriptional machinery, pointed for breast cancer (BC) development via ei

Estradiol, also designed as 17- ? -estradiol, belongs to the pharmaceutical class of steroid estrogens and was included in the Watch List since 2013 the Directive 2013/39/EU due to its potential risk to human health and environment. The low removal efficiency of estrogens by the conventional wastewater treatment plants, becomes a major source of their release into different aquatic matrices. Phytoestrogens are compounds occurring in different plant species and in different plant parts, mainly leaves and flowers. These components exhibit an estrogenic activity both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Chemically, they refer to the classes of isoflavones, flavanones, coumestrans and resorcylic acid lactones. Phytoestrogens are known for health beneficial effects in the prevention of breast cancer, post-menopausal syndrome, osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. However, the potency of most of these compounds is relatively low compared to human estrogens (e.g. the 17-estradiol). Hops (Humulus

Abstract:
About 75% of breast cancers express estrogen receptors (ERs), which is a good base for an efficient endocrine therapy. This gives the opportunity for the treatment of patients with antiestrogens, compounds that bind to the ERs and thus compete to estradiol (E2), preventing its action in progression of estrogen-depending cancers. Here we present results of testing the effect of the modified steroids, namely 17-substituted 16-nitrile 16,17-secoestrane compounds on the E2-ER complex forming, its stability, nuclear translocation and binding to DNA. Almost all compounds in moderate to high rate ind

Removal of emerging contaminants is considered to be one of the most important processes within advanced Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) system. Pharmaceutical contaminants in drinking water could potentially lead to human’s increasing risks of heart attacks, organ damage, mental health and even cancer. This paper investigates the emerging contaminant removal efficiencies of technologies employed by local WWTPs. Abstract:
Both the genes and cDNA sequences encoding the b-subunits of black carp LH and FSH were isolated, cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis of the bcFSHb and LHb5'flanking regions revealed that the promoter region of both genes contains canonical TATA sequences, 30 bp and 17 bp upstream of the transcription start site of FSHb and LHb genes, respectively. In addition, they include several sequences of cis-acting motifs, required for inducible and tissue-specific transcriptional regulation: the gonadotropin-specific element (GSE), GnRH responsive element (GRE), half sites of estrogen and androgen
