Experimental research designs are used to address questions of cause and effect, such as “What can be?” and “What if?” A simple definition of experimental research is that a primary independent variable (e.g., a new teaching method) is manipulated by the researcher to determine its effect on a dependent variable (the outcome). Researchers conducting experiments generally set out to test a particular theory and/or hypothesis about some aspect of music teaching or learning.
