The present chapter deals with the variants of grading schemes that are applied in current Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) tests. MCQs are ideally suited for electronic examinations, which, as assessment items, are typically developed in the framework of Learning Content Management Systems (LCMSs) and handled, in the cycle of educational and training activities, by Learning Management Systems (LMS). Special focus is placed in novel grading methodologies, that enable to surpass the limitations and drawbacks of the most commonly used grading schemes for MCQs in electronic examinations. The paired MCQs grading method, according to which a set of pairs of MCQs is composed, is presented. The MCQs in each pair are similar concerning the same topic, but this similarity is not evident for an examinee that does not possess adequate knowledge on the topic addressed in the questions of the pair. The adoption of the paired MCQs grading method might expand the use of electronic examinations, provided that the new method proves its equivalence to traditional methods that might be considered as standard, such as constructed response (CR) tests. Research efforts to that direction are presented.

This chapter sets aside questions of textual excess to discuss mass assessments and the production of literary knowledge or literary information. As the rise of liberal meritocracy in the Victorian period increasingly required bureaucratic impersonality and quantitative metrics, standardized literature tests negotiated between aesthetics and information during the formation of literary studies as a discipline. Literature exams from normal schools, the British Civil Service, and the US Bureau of Indian Affairs reflect broader controversies over what constitutes literary knowledge and whether it can be systematically assessed. Such concerns involve epistemological problems, as well as social questions. Race, gender, and class inflect depictions of standardized examinations in novels by Charles Dickens, Emily Brontë, Anthony Trollope, Fanny Fern, Frank Webb, Charlotte Yonge, Louisa May Alcott, and others. These and other texts anticipate aspects of the current crisis in the humanities—accountability through testing, the corporatization of education, and the instrumental value of the literary.

The lack of practical intelligence may be due to the way in which explicit knowledge is valued and subsequently assessed in engineering education, namely via examinations, tests, laboratory reports, and tutorial exercises. The lack of effective assessments on practical intelligence indicates implicit devaluation, which can significantly impair engineering students' ability to acquire practical intelligence. To solve this problem, the authors propose a new method of assessment for measuring practical intelligence acquired by engineering students after performing engineering laboratory classes. The novices-experts approach is used in designing the assessment instruments, based on the behaviors' of novices/experts observed and novices/experts representative work-related situations. The practical intelligence can be measured by calculating the difference between participants' and the experts' ratings; the closer the novices to experts, the higher the practical intelligence acquired.

Prospective, concurrent-cohort study. To establish the relationship between radiographic alignment parameters and functional CoE measurements at one week before and at three months after realignment surgery in ADS patients. Adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) represents a significant healthcare burden with exceedingly high and increasing prevalence, particularly among the elderly. Radiographic alignment measures and patient-reported outcomes currently serve as the standard means to assess spinal alignment, deformity, and stability. Neurological examinations have served as qualitative measures for indicating muscle strength, motor deficits, and gait abnormalities. Three-Dimensional motion analysis is increasingly being used to identify and measure gait and balance instability. Recently, techniques have been established to quantify balance characteristics described by Dubousset as the “cone of economy” (CoE). The relationship between radiographic alignment parameters and CoE balance measures of ADS patients before and after realignment surgery is currently unknown. 29 ADS patients treated with realignment surgery. Patients were evaluated at one week before realignment surgery and at their three-month follow-up examination. During each evaluation, patients completed self-reported outcomes (visual analog scales for pain, Oswestry Disability Index, SRS22r) and a functional balance test. Mean changes in dependent measures from before to after surgery were compared using paired t-tests. Pearson correlations were used to test for significant correlations between changes in radiographic and CoE measures. Significant improvements were found for all patient-reported outcomes, in several radiographic measures, and in CoE measures. Improvements of scoliosis Cobb angle, coronal pelvic tilt, lumbar lordosis, and thoracic kyphosis showed significant correlations with CoE sway and total distance measures at both the center of mass and center of the head. Improved radiographic alignment measures significantly correlated with improved CoE balance measures among ADS patients treated with realignment surgery at their three-month follow-up. These findings indicate that functional balance evaluations when used in conjunction with radiographic measurements, may provide a more robust and improved patient-specific sensitivity for postoperative assessments. CoE balance may represent a new measure of added value for surgical intervention of ADS.

Because of their duration, LMOOCs often focus on specific aspects of the target language, e.g. academic writing, improving pronunciation, written communication for the workplace, preparation for specific language examinations, survival language skills, etc. There are also abundant introductory courses focusing on basic language performance. Enrolment is free but these courses are usually not eligible for credit; however, learners may purchase a certification, which is normally moderately priced. Enrolment is not restricted by age, qualifications, or geographic location, conditions that nurture their ‘massiveness’. MOOCs are delivered through online platforms which are based on the template approach to software authoring, that is, multimedia content is inserted into templates by materials writers. MOOCs that follow a course format are known as xMOOCs (x stands for eXtended). They include a syllabus and are organised according to a set schedule; moreover, learners usually have access to some instructor guidance. On occasions, after the first edition of the scheduled course, some LMOOCs are made available on a self-access basis. This means that learners are free to set their own pace and organise their study at will. The onus of learning is therefore on the student. Most MOOCs are based on micro-lessons delivered through short audio or video clips followed by exercises, activities, and reading material. Most LMOOCs also include assignments, tests, or quizzes that are either automatically assessed or peer-assessed by means of rubrics. Grading is also provided, and students can oversee their performance through an automatic scoring system.
