Asian-Pacific region remains the world economy’s driving force. Against this background, old unresolved problems as well as emerging new challenges could worsen stability. Necessity of working out balanced structures to maintain regional stability and decrease the rising competition between the US and China, is on the agenda. In this respect, ASEAN has not lost its credibility. Its joint experience, as well as that of the East Asian summit, is worth reviewing for better use in common interests. Regional economic relations in East Asia have experienced a period of profound change since the 1997/98 financial crisis. Two developments are particularly notable. The first relates to the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) framework, under which an increasingly coalescent regional economic grouping has emerged in East Asia. Thus far, APT member states (Japan, China, South Korea and the ASEAN group) have devoted much energy to creating new mechanisms of regional financial governance, such as the Chiang Mai Initiative and Asian Bond Market Initiative. In doing so, this research argues that political parties were the driver of these reforms, contrary to the conventional ‘parties do not matter’ perspective that dominates the East Asian welfare state literature. Abstract:
The Philippines has been a major source of female domestic labor in East Asia. The migration of Filipino female household service or domestic workers contributed to the sustained economic growth in countries like Japan, Hong Kong, PRC, and Singapore, amidst chronic demographic and labor issues. Being literate in the health and social security systems is vital to ensuring the well-being of Filipino migrant workers and the sustainable development of both the Philippines and East Asian countries. Abstract:
International maritime shipping is an essential part of global business. Abstract:
This paper discusses the conditions under which policy-based lending may further economic development within a Latin American and Caribbean context, given the current state of financial markets in most countries of the region. The discussion is intended as a conclusion to the articles presented at the Conference on Policy Based Finance and Alternatives for Financial Market Development, many of which are included in this book. In some degree, this chapter is an attempt at a compromise; a position that does not recommend a formal adoption of policy based finance as it exists in East Asia, but ra
